I know Dr. Who, and THAT'S no Dr. Who. I want to be excited, but it just doesn't look right. Here's a link to a preview trailer... Http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/news/drwho/2004/12/02/15823.shtml

BOSTON LEGAL is ditching one female for another. Lake Bell is gone from the show after episode #13 and they're bringing in Candice Bergan as a new partner in the law firm.

Steve Carell will be taking on the roll of the 'boss from hell' in NBC's version of THE OFFICE. I believe it's starting up as a mid-season replacement. Steve Carell? How can you NOT like Steve Carell? This is an odd casting choice.

Fans of LAW & ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT have something to be worried about. Vincent D'Onofrio, depending on who you listen to, is either wanting to leave the show after this season or being forced out by NBC for a cheaper lead actor. This is kinda shitty after finding out that USA and Bravo have just agreed to pay $2 million per episode for rerun rights, which is the highest ever for a show, even CSI. Chris Noth is coming in for 'one episode' of 'L&O:CI' to see how he works out as a replacement for next season.

On the main LAW & ORDER show, Jesse Martin is heading off to film the big screen version of RENT so they are bringing in Michael Imperioli from THE SOPRANOS for the final five episodes of the season as Dennis Farrina's nephew/new partner. Jesse Martin will be back next season though.

This could get interesting... CBS is looking at both Tim Russert and Matt Lauer for Dan Rather's successor. Well, if the money's good...

Oh yeah, I don't know if this has been mentioned in the sports forums yet, but CNBC cancelled John McEnroe's show.

I don't want to say something sweeping like, "This will save the series from stagnation," but it could help a lot. If they bring him in as the old Mike Logan character, that pretty much kills off the "uncannily super-intelligent detective who sees your left pinky tick and realizes that you have an extremely rare neurological disorder that causes you to confess your crime in the face of extremely thin circumstantial evidence" story endings. I can't help but think that's a good thing.

I really like Vincent D'Onofrio as an actor, but they gave him a character that frequently verges on the absurd. All too often it seems as if the plots hit a wall, and then suddenly Detective Goren notices some weird medical condition. Boom: solution! At this point, I half expect Mr. Data to come out and tell them they can solve the crime by using reverse-tachyon beams. And have it work. In every case. Regardless of circumstance.

Totally agree with Jeb here. I was a fan of the show at first, but it kept getting more and more absurd, and the focus on Goran bothers me when great actors like Courtney B. Vance and Jamey Sheridan are relegated to the (far) background. D'Onofrio keeps going in and out of the hospital with exhaustion because he's supposedly a workaholic. Plus, he's supposed to be "difficult" on the set (didn't he and Andrew McCarthy get into a fistfight last season?).

I really like Noth, and how about when Law & Order: Trial By Jury fails they pair him up with Jerry Orbach on CI? (A guy can dream, right?)

It'll be fun to see Michael Imperioli as a cop after I'm so used to him being on the other side of the law. Of course, he's been on the show before (murdering limo driver about 10 seasons ago). I'm digging Farina, and I guess NBC finally got a win over CBS (well, Law and Order beat CSI, to be more accurate) the last week of sweeps.

I like. Bell's character hasn't been on much since she broke up with Shore, but it would be fun to see them write for someone who is new in the whole judicial process- everyone on the firm are pretty much veterans.

Technically, Bergen isn't a "new" member of the legal team. She's playing Schmidt, the third partner of Crane, Poole, and Schmidt. We haven't met Schmidt yet, but she's probably a veteran (since she's a partner).

EDIT: Nevermind... I misunderstood.

Let me clarify- I wasn't talking about Bergen's character, I was talking about Bell's- it's been established that she is relatively new to the legal field.

My main beef with L&O:CI is that it's not Law & Order. It's basically just like every other "super intelligent detective solves the case" show ever made, which is precisely the thing that Dick Wolf wanted to avoid when he created L&O in the first place.

The best thing to do would be to just cancel CI altogether. The original concept (L&O from the criminal's point of view) proved to be unworkable, so why not just cancel the show before it gets even stupider?*

* = of course they won't cancel it given the good ratings and big-money syndication deal, but a guy can dream, can't he?

You know, first of all, we are doing this for her, okay? Because neither one of us wants to get divorced. And second-of-ly, I know you're the big marriage expert... Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot. Your wife is dead.

[laughs]
[beat]

...I'm sorry, that was 100% inappropriate, and I do apologize profusely...I'm...oh...

I'll always miss his Daily Show contributions, but this sounds pretty awesome.
