Well, I saw Troy tonight...and I must say I was impressed. Everything is suitably epic, and the story is very easy to follow. Brad Pitt is damned impressive as Achilles, while Eric Bana is equally impressive as Hector. Everyone else is suitable for their roles, and nobody really stuck out as out of place. And Brian Cox is such a heel, it rules. Expect this to contend for a few Oscars, at the very least for stuff like cinematography and set decoration.

Highly recommended.

How was the soon-to-be-a-houshold-name Nathan Jones? Was it one of those blink and you miss him roles?

MINOR SPOILER:

Nathan Jones plays a warrior who jobs to Achilles (Brad Pitt) in 10 seconds. He's a convincing corpse.

" nobody really stuck out as out of place."

I saw today that Angelina Jolie plays some guys mother, the guy looked about 25-30. That doesn't even stick out?

That would be Alexander, where she plays Colin Farrell's mother, not Troy. Different epic.

One thing I'm wondering, that I haven't seen touched on in any of the stuff I've read/heard about Troy.

How do they treat Achilles? Is he the nigh-invulnerable figure of myth, or just a bad-ass warrior?

He is a bad-ass warrior who might be nigh-invulnerable.
Basically they leave it to your imagination, as with many aspects of the movie (Gods ordering events or not)

I thought it was fun. Realised later (when looking up some stuff about the Iliad story) that they took quite some liberties, but it made for a better movie.

Brian Cox WAS a heel. Well played.
Hector was the noble babyface, very well played and Pitt was the cool heel.
Paris btw got laughed at quite a bit in the theater.
And I must say, the lady playing Helen (Diane Kruger i believe her name is?) is quite beautiful indeed.

*sigh* Why bother?

Whoa...are we talking Brian Cox, the NFL linebacker of weird-neck-pad fame?

Oh, and ABC's David Muir had the line of the morning so far teasing a "GMA" look at Troy: "Coming up...Brad Pitt in a leather skirt..."

Yikes.

I find it interesting that Agamemnon is the heel here. Under classical Greek rules, he'd be the face because his property (wife) was stolen from him. Also, what did they do with Ajax? He was a pretty major figure in the Iliad, but I see here that he's being played by Taylor Mane of all people. Did he even do anything?

Agamemnon's brother (I believe Menaelus?) gets his wife stolen and Agamemnon joins his brother in war. The movie is a lot more black and white than the Illiad (where everyone outside of maybe Odysseus comes off looking like a prick). Ajax is pretty minor in the film...he kicks some ass, then Hector kicks his.

I thought the movie was just ok...a little bit too generic for my tastes. The music seemed to be lifted from every other epic film ever made. I also really hate how in this type of movies, everyone speaks with a fake British accent. Brad Pitt's is especially jarring. I'm also pissed that there was no Cassandra, as she is my favorite character in the Illiad.

...Oddly enough no "Eros" between the soldiers either, I wonder how that would have flown with the popcorn movie crowd if it were included. :)

I dug the movie enough, but I thought Eric Bana was WAY too bland for the role of Hector. Pitt did well as did Orlando Bloom (btw, is Bloom going to be typecast as the "dude who shoots arrows" now?), but Bana was just not believable.

Oh, and there are lots of "shades of grey" in this movie, in fact so many that I actually lost some interest because I wasn't really rooting for anyone. Paris (Bloom) was a pussy, Brian Cox was a heel, and Brad Pitt was a tweener of the highest magnitude.

But yes, that Diane woman was very attractive and did a decent job with her portrayal of Helen. I just wish they had shortened the movie; it felt longer than Dances With Wolves.

Sorry, it's been a while since I read the Iliad. You're totally right about Menaelus.

Off-topic, I know, but...Torchslasher, God bless you. I thought I was the only Wiener here who dug Clue: The Movie. My sister and I still quote lines from that flick back and forth...

"I'm getting there! I'm getting there!"

"There's still 1 thing I don't understand."
"1 thing!?"

And most disturbing...

"Get off me." (Save the Ken/Ryan Shamrock jokes, please.) :-)

Mr. Green: Mrs. Peacock was a MAN?!

Comedy GOLD.

Once upon a time in China, some believe, around the year one double-ought three, head priest of the White Lotus Clan, Pai Mei was walking down the road, contemplating whatever it is that a man of Pai Mei's infinite power contemplates - which is another way of saying "who knows" - when a Shaolin monk appeared, traveling in the opposite direction. As the monk and the priest crossed paths, Pai Mei, in a practically unfathomable display of generosity, gave the monk the slightest of nods. The nod was not returned. Now was it the intention of the Shaolin monk to insult Pai Mei or did he just fail to see the generous social gesture? The motives of the monk remain unknown. What is known, are the consequences. The next morning Pai Mei appeared at the Shaolin Temple and demanded of the Temple's head abbot that he offer Pai Mei his neck to repay the insult. The Abbot at first tried to console Pai Mei, only to find Pai Mei was inconsolable. So began the massacre of the Shaolin Temple and all 60 of the monks inside at the fists of the White Lotus. And so began the legend of Pai Mei's five point palm exploding heart technique.

Wadsworth: And chilled monkey's brains, though popular in Cantonese cuisine, are not often to be found in Washington DC!

Mr. Green: Is that what we ate? *bleargh*

Clue is one of those movies I can watch whenever it comes on cable.

I thought Troy was alright. Eric Bana was pretty good, though I was surprised to see any scenery left the way Brian Cox was chewing it up. It was pretty jarring not to see Cassandra; I though she was a pretty important part to the story.

Yeah, my problem with Clue on TV is that when it comes on Comedy Central, they chop it to bits. I wouldn't notice it if I hadn't seen the movie...oh about 50 times. It is just too jarring to watch CC cut it that much.

Col. Mustard: "You lure men to their deaths like a spider with flies."

Mrs. White: "Flies are where men are most vulnerable."
