So the chief appeal of Goldberg was that he was freaking intense and had huge winning streak. Triple H once said that the problem with having a character like that is "what are you going to do once you beat him?"*

Well, the huge winning streak created huge heat for whomever would eventually beat him. That guy turned out to be Nash via cattle prod and he gave the title back to Hogan the next night via finger poke and everything sucked. They fucked it up but the opportunity was there for Nash to be a monstrous heel. Had they aligned him with Scott Hall and feuded the two of them against Hogan and Goldberg I bet they would have been able to capitalize a little bit more.

Anyway.

Triple H has been generating a manly-sized rub for whoever ends up beating him. (Snicker, snicker.) If they do a strong title switch when he loses instead of handing it back to him the following month, they'll be able to cement a strong babyface in the main event. Whether or not they do this is another matter entirely. (And yeah, I think they'll fuck it up.)

I'd hoped they would have given Booker T the belt at Mania. I've been thinking about some fantasy booking that would give him the big win over Hunter at Survivor Series, after a run with the IC title.

He's the closest thing Raw has as a new main event babyface. The people fucking cheer for him! No one else has that on Raw. If he sticks around for a couple years he could become a Sting or Rock-like performer who the crowd just can't boo.

So I say let Hunter keep on generating heat by beating Nash against the odds and getting through Goldberg via Four Horsemen-like shenanagins. Give Booker a two month run with the IC title and move directly onto another Triple H program. (Hell, have him lose the IC belt to Mark Jindrack or Randy Orton to set it up.)

Anyway.

The point here is that Triple H and company could have booked themselves into a corner. What do you do with Triple H once he doesn't have the World Title and what do you do with whoever beats him? Will they be another Ronnie Garven, an uncredible babyface keeping the belt warm for the true heel champion?

* No source or anything. I remember this from an interview he gave a little while after the trade show incident where Bill Goldberg ambushed him with obscenities.

Simple solution, and apparently the one they're taking: HHH never loses the title. Ever.

I'm of the school of thought that they can make anyone a star that they want to, and make the fans believe it by manipulating certain factors (clean wins, making segments important, associating them with bigger names, well produced hype packages, etc.) They can MAKE a baby face to oppose Triple H and give him the title. Hell, they MADE Triple H a big heel by doing all of the above for him, but when it comes to someone else, it's umpossible.

Exactly, they forced Triple H down our throats month after month despite his lack of heat or interest until FINALLY after big angle after angle, he finally got over with the Mick Foley feud. He even became a half decent promo after going out there night after night and talking to his feet for 20 minutes.

Vince once made Zeus into a monster heel for a few months despite not being able to do anything more then a bearhug and nerve hold. He made Ultimate Frickin' Warrior into a superstar. He knows how to do it but it seems he's lost his patience. It's hard to create a new star when they're not looking more then a few weeks ahead.

The difference between Goldberg and Triple H is that Triple H's victories aren't clean. Hunter's character is very simple, he is obsessed with the title. He will do anything to walk away with it night after night. And of course getting DQ'ed is easier than pinning your opponent.

Goldberg beat everybody clean in two minutes. He couldn't be beaten. Triple H can be beaten, but he weasels his way out of it, that's the difference. Triple H is more like the nWo Hogan, I'd guess, and I'm no WCW expert.

Yeah, he's more like a mix of nWo Hogan and old school Ric Flair. At least he picked the two most successful old timers to emmulate. Heh.

Triple H = NWO Hogan? I'd say that's a fair assessment, especially in that people got fed up with NWO Hogan and turned off WCW in droves about five years ago the same way people did with Raw when creative didn't realize how overexposed Hunter was.

How is this for a comparison...The Original Sheik. Both bad ass heels, both companies built around them, both refused to give up their position, Neither did jobs. The Sheiks promotion ended up dead. Hunter's promotion on life support. Hmmm wonder if Hunter would look good in a turban?

The only big differences are:

* Hogan, when he first turned heel, got the kind of heat that Trips can only dream about
* While the Starrcade Hogan vs Sting match was badly fumbled, WCW was able to set up Piper, Sting, and then Goldberg as strong faces to compete against
* Hogan cleanly jobbed to Goldberg on Nitro, giving WCW their 2nd last head to head win.

Pfft. Please. There was so much going on in WCW at the time you can't single out Hogan as the only top guy and you can't blame him for people turning WCW off "in droves", especially since they didn't. WCW had strong numbers for some time after they started losing to RAW. The numbers weren't really bad till the last 12 months or so, and Hogan being forced out sure as hell didn't improve any ratings.

I believe the first significant dip came when they handed Nash the book.
