| #1 Posted on 11.1.03 1316.20 | I noticed on another thread that a lot of us watch this stuff. I think it has little to do with subject matter. The fact is that the shows' bosses do an excellent job of picking sexy, real, approachable-looking women for the shows. To me, Paige, Genny, the female carpenter (name?), Samantha Brown, the girl who does 30-Minute Meals on the Food Network (name?), etc. are all more fun to look at than Trish Stratus or Pamela Anderson because they are much more natural. I don't think this is lost on the shows' producers. They know that when we watch Trading Spaces, even if we truly enjoy the show, we like Paige's tight pants and Genny's bazookas.| Promote this thread! | | probleus

| #4 Posted on 11.1.03 2303.00 | To say that I am not at all appealed to by this would be a lie. However, I think it is inaccurate to say that the entire appeal of these shows is solely due to having attractive females. I've watched enough TS episodes with Vern, Doug and Ty to say I enjoy it even when my future wife Amy-Wynn is nowhere to be found. (On a side note, has anyone else seen the ads for the TS in Vegas episode and just thought Amy-Wynn looked damn good in her glam wear?)
And as for food network, while I agree Rachel Ray is kind of cute, I find most of the shows I enjoy on that network are either hosted by men, or by women I don't find particularly attractive. Except for Martha Stewart of course. I want to do nasty things with her...but perhaps that shouldn't be shared with everyone ;)

| #6 Posted on 13.1.03 0955.46 | Instant Rating: 6.73 | First of all Amy-Wynn is MY future wife. And my actual wife's future wife too, I might add.
I think the Trading Spaces girls are appealing because not only are all five of them approachable, everyday kind of hot chicks, but all five of them are different types with different personalities. I mean, one of those five has to be your type, although I'm sure some people (like me) would do at least four out of the five in a second (I can't stand the redheaded southern belle).
And seeing Amy-Wynn and Genevieve flirt when they're both on the show is worth the monthly cable bill by itself, whereas seeing Torrie Wilson and Dawn Marie make out isn't even worth the FCC tax. Why? Because one pair are real, and one are totally fake. Wait come to think of it, TWO pairs are real and two are totally fake. (Thank you folks! You can see me at Joshua Silverstein's bar mitzvah next weekend).
To a lesser extent, the same's true of the guys, although I'm sure nobody is having naughty thoughts about Frank at night. But Ty, Vern (although you can tell Vern is like, 45), and Doug are all attractive, and all have different personalities and looks.

| #8 Posted on 13.1.03 1855.19 | Does anyone else on here assign *alignments* to the cast? I mean, after having watched a few episodes, I kind of got the feeling that the likes of Doug, Hilde, and sometimes Laurie were heels (and Dez if you remember her and her crazy lamps and Pan Asian themes!!!!), while Frank, Vern, Genieveve, the carpenters, and Paige were the faces. Its probably just cuz I tended not to like their given designs, but the heels always seems less flexible in their design ideas, more willing to use/destroy the owners stuff, and less creative in their concepts. The faces seem fun all around.
Although, from what I've seen this season, the two new designers are heels, and they might be turning Doug face.

You know, this is a bit unrelated to your post, but SCREW THE OWNERS and their stuff. If you are going to sign up for the show, you should know beforehand that Doug is going to paint your fireplace and Genevieve is going to turn your floor orange. It always pisses me off when the owners have little restrictions on the designs.
And MoeGates said a few words about Genevieve and Amy Wynn flirting...but Saturday night I saw Hildy caress (I'm serious) Paige's hip when describing the silkiness of a fabric. Paige sub-consciously (and nervously) tapped the same thigh a microsecond later with her scissors in kind of an awkward/flustered way. I interpret this as meaning (a) Hildy is lesbian and (b) Paige is not but has thought about it before.
Am I a freak for sexually-analyzing TS, or is there some weird sexual undercurrent to all the happenings on the show?
Probably the former. :)

| #10 Posted on 13.1.03 2000.31 | Eddie: Paige is so definitely a heel, not a face. Her and Genevive's flirtation is like the always-there yet not always acknowledged friendship between Sting and Lex Luger when Lex would be a heel.

| #11 Posted on 13.1.03 2211.37 | I'll have to pay more attention to the lesbian flirtation, I suppose. I always just wrote it off as *girls are more touchy-feely than boys*. Although I always took Hilde for the prissy princess types. I'm not so sure about my analyses of anyone's sexual preferences since I found out Frank is married (courtesy the TLC website.)
I guess I never considered Paige a heel since she never designs a room.
As far as the *don't touch my stuff*, I agree that the homeowners should be willing to play ball, but sometimes, there' a good reason for not touching something. Its like the whole ceiling fan debate (which the designers are starting to accept, if not come around on). No one puts a ceiling fan into a room because its enhances the appearance. There's a certain functional aspect to it. A room is hot and stuff and a fan is needed to cool it down. They may wind up with a nice looking fan-less room, but if its too hot to sit in there, then they aren't going to get to appreciate it.
Also, I think that while the designers are fully entitled to change a room (and the resultant furniture) however they see fit, permanent changes are something that should be used in moderation. I know Hilde's guilty of attempting to PAINT carpeting and furniture (those poor pink couches!), and while she's entitled to do that, its always nice to allow the homeowners some way to reconstruct the room in the event that they don't like it. Not that the designers can't make anything permanent, but its a simple courtesy to consider that not everyone will appreciate what's being done to their living space. Its this attitude, combined with the more outlandish designs, that makes certain designers heels in my eyes.

| #12 Posted on 14.1.03 0238.38 | The 3 most hideous things that I've ever seen on that show are all Hilde creations, & a big part of their hideousness is the non-reversability of them:
#3: Hay glued on the walls (with the ceiling painted pink).
#2: 6000 plastic flowers nail-gun'd to every bit of wall surface in a tiny bathroom.
#1: The fireplace (along with the rest of the entire room) painted half grey & half burgundy (Not top/bottom, but right/left; technically the room was in quadrants, split down the middle of each wall.), & then a mosaic of glass chunks mosaic'd with silicon glue over the paint on the fireplace.

Paige is easily my favourite from the TS girls.
As for the original thread, well I have no problem with Trish, she seemed really cute and approachable when hosting Excess and when she dressed more in her civies... But I could see what you mean, a Pam Anderson or a Carmon Electra aren't as good hosts as the girl from the Travel CHannel and Paige from TS, among others. Maybe for their look but also they are very good hosts.
Can't believe people talk about The Food Network and no one mentioned Nigella Lawson form Nigella Bites, major British babe.

| #16 Posted on 14.1.03 1347.02 | A few points:
Man, you guys are freakin' sick.
Frank produces more sweat than any other creature ever.
Ty is awful and is also a tweener.
Vern is the best designer, by far. He reminds me of B.D. Wong.
For an explanation on Genevive being a lesbian, look only to her apparent preference to always dress in prison jumpsuit-style outfits. It's obvious she's spent some time in the slammer... she's also ALWAYS barefoot which doesn't explain anything, but really annoys the fuck out of me.
IMO, Dez was originally cast as the "car accident" designer to insure that when they needed a wacky terrible room, they could snap their fingers in her direction and instantly have one. I'm thinking they might be trying to get back to this with the new "Black Dez" girl and Frank's new cuddling buddy, whose name I believe is Generic Gay Designer.
Alex McLeod (current host of "Who Wants To Marry A Former UPW Wrestler Millionaire") was annoying, Paige is FUCKING annoying. Her hair is the same shape as a sample I found when doing a leaf collection project in 4th grade.

Gen's bare feet annoy the hell out of me. That one episode when they made that poor lady with the foot phobia take off her shoes (and Doug put a mural type thing of a foot on the wall, no less!) was rather irksome. But Doug was so heelish (no pun intended) in that episode, that I could see him turning face.
As far as the carpenters go, is Andrew Danjumbo (I love that name!) of WYWO not the best? Not only does he have a cool name, but he's lazy, and if I didn't know any better (and I don't), I'd think he's trying to pick up any and all of the women he's working with each week.
Edit: By the by, Nigella Bites is on the Style Channel. Not food network. And there's something about her that irks me, but I can't put my finger on it. But I did pop for her owning the WWF Cookbook.
