Major conference tournaments started today with the Big East first round. Syracuse beat Cincy by one on a three by Gerry McNamara who took 22 steps before shooting which was followed by a "tirade" by Jim Boeheim that ESPN (surprise, surprise) blew way out of proportion. Syracuse probably still needs to beat Uconn in the quarters while Cincy should be good to go, but those two teams will be sweating.

Seton Hall looked horrible in their loss to Rutgers. With all their bad losses and an RPI in the 50s, I have to think they're going to be on the outside looking in, but who knows? I do think the Big East won't get nine. In other games, Pitt almost blew a 33-5 lead in beating Pitino and Louisville by 5, and Georgetown scraped by Notre Dame in a nice comeback win.

Auto-bids: Penn, Winthrop, Belmont, Murray State, Davidson, Southern Illinois, North Carolina-Wilmington, Gonzaga, Oral Roberts, Iona, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, South Alabama, Monmouth, and Montana with 17 auto bids still to be given out.

Should be a very interesting weekend.

Well, maybe 'Cuse isn't quite dead yet...

Gerry McNamara hits another clutch late 3, and Syracuse knocks off UConn in OT, 86-84. That probably puts 'Cuse in, and probably knocks Seton Hall out. Cincy's probably still on the bubble, and they might sneak in, unless Rutgers wins the whole thing.

At this point, Syracuse is probably in, but you can thank Seton Hall for that moreso than the (admittedly) impressive nature of Syracuse's wins. Syracuse would probably still need one more if Seton Hall hadn't blown it against Rutgers. Cincinnati's probably still in as well considering the game with Syracuse went to the wire, while the Pirates are probably NIT-bound. (And kwik is right in saying that Rutgers needs to win the tournament to get in, and I don't think that'll be happening.)

It's all laid out on a silver platter for Villanova - win the Big East tournament, and they'll go into the NCAAs as the #1 overall seed. But if the Wildcats lose - then who gets it? Duke? Connecticut? Memphis? Ohio State? Craziness.

It's good to see that the WWE isn't backing away from Batista or Cena. There's still some questions lingering over a few of the draft moves they either made or didn't make (Jericho being a prime example), but the stage is set for a solid run to Summerslam that may send the indicator down. The longer Triple H stays away is also a plus...

Thankfully, they still all get to play for it. If this were football, UConn would be headed for the Gator Bowl or something along with a couple of those other teams, with Duke and Ohio State play for the title amongst themselves.

On-topic, Oregon beat Washington State last night to set-up a grudge match with Washington in the Pac-10 quarters, so hopefully OUR Huskies won't trip up like UConn's. Game starts at midnight or so ET, set your TiVos.

Gonzaga sure was tested by San Diego and should've lost to LMU, so I don't know how that bodes for the northwest's other tourney representative.

So, where's the downside?

Seriously though, I don't think OSU is going to sniff the overall one seed. Last I knew, it was down to Memphis or OSU to round out the number one seeds.

The biggest thing about the UCONN loss is that if Villanova can win or at least get to the Big East Finals, they won't have to travel. Nova will play the first two rounds in Philly and probably stay in the East and go through Washington D.C. on the way to Indy. Under those circumstances, UCONN probably will get shipped out West, while Duke goes South and Memphis to the Midwest. Under those circumstances, it would behoove Ohio State to get to the Big 10 Finals and get the 2 seed in the Midwest and possibly the easiest path to the Final Four.
Another interesting question is if UCLA wins the Pac 10 Tourney, do they get the 2 seed in the West with Gonzaga getting shipped or does Gonzaga somehow hold onto the 2 in the West.

Travel is only an issue in the regional finals though. UConn and Villanova could both be #1 seeds, and start in Philadelphia. Worst case for UConn is that they get seeded in the Oakland regional. Best case would probably have Duke flaming out early in the ACC tournament, and then maybe they get sent to Atlanta.

Regional sites this year are, Washington, Oakland, Minneapolis, and Atlanta.

I know this would be sacriligious to the Crazies, but if Duke crashes out of the ACC tournament - a distinct possibility the way they've been playing recently - they shouldn't be a #1 seed. They don't have to win the tournament, but they at least have to show that they're off the schneid.

Florida State's loss hurts the ACC - the conference may only get four bids if someone outside the top tier (Duke, UNC, NC State and BC) doesn't win the tournament. The Duke win was huge, but that's really the only thing they can boast about. Maybe Maryland can go on a run and pick up the slack.

If Duke doesn't at least make it to the semis, no way does it deserve a No. 1 seed. Yeah, yeah, J.J. Redick is the greatest thing since running water, but if you end the season by losing your last two games _ to an unranked team and to a team ranked 14 spots below you, at home _ and don't make a run in your conference tourney, suck it.

No way that Duke loses a number one seed unless they totally flame out against Miami, and Memphis, Nova, and Ohio State all win their conference tournaments. Otherwise Duke is easily a number one seed. Unfortunately.

Syracuse was the big winner today with its Big East Quarterfinal win over UConn, and they're now in the field of 65 for sure. My beloved Maryland Terps dominated Georgia Tech to advance in the First Round of the ACC Tournament and is now right on the cusp. Colorado scrapes by Baylor and is now headed for a likely elimination game with Texas A&M in the Big XII Quarterfinals. Cal also got the win they need over Southern Cal in the Pac Ten QF.

Teams that weren't helping their case included Florida State (loser to 3-13 Wake Forest in the ACC First Round), Air Force (lost to Wyoming in the Mountain West Quarters), Michigan (lost to Minnesota and has dropped seven of nine), and BYU (slim bubble hopes evaporate with a loss to Utah).

Much more tomorrow...

Well, if there was any questions left about Syracuse, they're gone. The Orange win a close one, again, and this time Gerry McNamara doesn't have to hit the winning shot.

Gotta wonder how much they'll have left in the tank tomorrow night for Pitt or 'Nova though.

Bucknell wins the Patriot championship, saving the selection committee the horror of maybe having to give an at-large to the Patriot League.

Wake is playing fairly well for a team that finished last in the ACC this season, knocking off Florida St. and NC State, setting up a game with Duke in the semis.

Duke, Memphis and Ohio St. all won so the potential #1s stay on track, but Tennessee lost, and I've seen them in brackets as a 2 or a 3, and I'd think they'll drop out of that.

Like you said though, it really doesn't matter. Syracuse is a lock to get in now, and you can totally thank Gerry Mac for that.

Wake's on quite the little run. They definitely need to win the tournament in order to get into the ACC's, but with the way Duke has been playing (the two losses and just barely surviving Miami) I definitely give them a good shot at an upset tomorrow.

I don't think Ohio State's a #1, unfortunately. At this point, I think they need to win the Big Ten tournament and hope that Memphis loses to UAB again. Connecticut was the #1 overall team going into the weekend, and I can't see them dropping out of the #1's entirely because of the Syracuse loss (which looks not as bad the further the Orange get in the Big East tourney). Villanova's a #1 regardless of whether they win or not (the only thing they'd lose by not winning the tournament is the overall #1 seeding) and, unfortunately, Duke probably needed to lose the Miami game to have any chance of losing a #1 seed.

Barring any upsets, your #1's are (in order) Villanova, Connecticut, Duke (though Duke could move up the pecking order if they make it through the ACC tournament), and Memphis, while the #2's are Ohio State, Gonzaga, Texas, and either Illinois or UNC.

'Nova's not getting #1 overall anymore- they lose their semi to Pitt, but that's actually the least of their worries at this point.

Allan Ray, who was a unanimous 1st team All-Big East, and was Villanova's #2 scorer this season got poked in the eye in the 2nd half, and is currently in the hospital. To tell you how bad it may be, ESPN wouldn't show a replay on Sportscenter.

If he's done for the year, and it's a strong possibility at this point, that's a big loss for 'Nova.

Jay Wright, in one of the updated stories on ESPN.com, said that the injury apparently was worse than it looked. Additionally, he said Ray would be traveling back w/ the team tomorrow and listed him as day-to-day.

That said, if Pitt wins tomorrow I think they deserve a 2 seed.

God bless the men of 2nd Bn, 127th Inf, 32d "Red Arrow" Brigade, WI Army Nat'l Guard...good luck, and come home soon.

Bracket'd! (ESPN.com)

Weird...ESPN had full brackets up before CBS had even finished airing them...and cbs.sportsline.com's own viewable brackets were behind the airing pace.

Once again, 3 of 4 Wisconsin D-1 NCAA programs make the Big Dance: the Badgers, Marquette and UW-Milwaukee. Once again, UWGB...doesn't. :-(

I think the part that demonstrated that the brackets were not secret until the unveiling was Billy Packer getting confused and talking about the 8-9 Game between Arizona and Wisconsin a region before that game had been announced.

Not only was Pitt robbed with the 5 seed, they don't get to stay super close to home. Detroit or wherever isn't bad, but mark my words, they're going to cleanse themselves of the 2002 Kent State game, crush Kansas, and make Memphis look like nothing. Then we're going to get Jamie Dixon vs. Ben Howland.

UCLA may have really lucked out in getting a 2 seed, but, San Diego then Oakland to get to the Final Four, with Memphis as a vulnerable #1 in that region? That bracket sets up really nice for them, maybe with Gonzaga as the potential bump in the road. It looks to me almost like when 'Cuse won it all a couple of years ago, starting in Worcester, and having the regional in Albany.

Right now, they're in my final four.

Committee did a horrible job this year. Air Force had no business even being near the field, and yet they're picked as an at-large. Utah State was also a bad pick, and Bradley and George Mason were shaky. Seton Hall should have been one of the last couple in (if they made it), but got a 10 seed for some reason. Tennessee crumbles down the stretch and gets a two seed while UNC and BC are 3 and 4 despite playing as well as anyone in that nation over their past ten to fifteen games. Nevada's a five seed? Cincy isn't in the tournament?

The problem seems like the committee was trying to make a point by punishing teams with bad non conference schedules like 9-7 in the ACC FSU being out and 10-6 in the Big XII Texas A&M squeaking in with a 12 seed, but then they go and give a bid to Air Force. The chairman of the committee was on the CBS Selection Show and came off as totally inconsistent in his reasoning while Billy Packer tore him apart.

Bad job this year.
