| #1 Posted on 19.3.06 1748.36 | Instant Rating: 6.55 | This is a weird request: I love tournaments. My favorite angle of all time was the 32-man WCW tournament won by Bret Hart. My favorite PPV was Survior Series 98 (?) featuring the WWF title tournament won by the Rock. I love any and all movies featuring some kind of elimination tournament - especially if it actually plays out all the way to the end. The problem is I think I might have seen them all.
The best of these, of course, is Bloodsport. The Quest isn't bad also. There's a bunch of other B-level kung-fu type movies (the best of which featured a guy who had a blade in his hair as the penulimate character) that I've seen. But if you know of others, please list them. I'm totally jonesing for a tournament movie. Even something along the lines of the Karate Kid if need be. Heck, even if they don't freature martial arts. Dodgeball's a tournament movie.
The more that there is absolutely no plot other than "who will win the tournament" the better. This is why Bloodsport rules, although the cops and the love interest should have been taken out in favor of some matches and tournament characters.
Also, the following types of movies don't count: stuff like "Best of the Best" which is strictly one-on-one compitition, without any elimiation and advancement. Also stuff like "Enter the Dragon," where the tournament never ends up going past the first round.
Man's most valuable trait is a judicious sense of what not to believe. - Euripides

- ML 2: Indians face White Sox in League Championship. The only movie in the series where any form of playoffs are shown.
- Back to the Minors: Minor League team challenges Twins.

I must admit though, the tournament in The Wizard doesn't come until the second half of the movie, and no one would ever be able to figure out the brackets for the Mortal Kombat tournament merely by watching the movie (there's clearly advancement though).

It has that look and feel of a martial arts tournament that games like Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat have been trying to emulate.

To be fair, Street Fighter was released in '87 and Bloodsport in '88.
Edit: somehow I typed in 89 when I meant 88.

I don't have a copy of the film (which was required watching when I was a middle/high school wrestler), but I think the ending takes place at the state wrestling tournament. Dragonball, Pokemon, Yu Yu Hakusho, and probably a dozen more that I can't think of at the moment all have storylines revolving around tournaments at some point.

I was actually referring to SFII. You can see some prototypes for characters like Honda, Blanka and Sagat in "Bloodsport" and Dux is basically Guile, who Van Damme plays in "Street Fighter."

Pride FC still uses the tournament style. Usually one round per PPV until the semi's and finals which are in one night. They are having an open weight tournament this year, so that would be actually exactly what you are looking for sans, Frank Dux's lying ass and fighters going blind. | The Guinness.

Speaking of documentaries, there's a good one called "Hands on a Hard Body": this radio station in Texas sponsors a contest where they take a couple of dozen people and a brand-new, fully-loaded truck...everybody stands around, keeping one hand on the truck at all times, and the last one standing gets to keep the truck.
Neither of these are really "tournaments," but they do feature eliminations, so I thought they might fill the need.
