And the cast grows. SuperHeroHype reports that the now-former That 70s Show star is making a jump to big-time films with his casting in Sam Raimi's third Spider-Man film, due in 2007.
Grace joins Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, Daniel Gillies, Thomas Haden Church & J.K. Simmons as confirmed as being involved in the project. Also suspected (but not confirmed) to be returning are Bruce Campbell, Ted Raimi, Bill Nunn, Dylan Baker, Elizabeth Banks & Christine Estabrook.
Sam Raimi directs the film, written by Spider-Man 2 scribe Alvin Sargent.
Has there been any mention of them going with the "two villains" approach? I'd hope not, because whenever they do that with comic book adaptations, it tends to suck the life out of the story (having to rush through two villains origins, two major character builds, two conflicts, etcetera). It's one thing to have a B or C-list villain make an appearance in addition to the main antagonist, but with Mysterio being one of the more major villains in Spider-Man lore, I doubt that'd happen.
Seeing as how Church is heavily rumored to be the villain (whomever that may be), I doubt Grace would be a villain himself. The only thing I can think of is one of them portraying someone who will be a villain in the next sequel, but not necessarily in this one. I think Church would be a tremendous Eddie Brock, and should get screentime in the third and become a villain in the fourth, while Grace plays Mysterio in the third.

Or a worse thought...since they look so much alike, are they going with the clone storyline? Topher Grace as Ben Reilly? One thing's for sure, he doesn't fit the Eddie Brock mold.

Given what they can do with computers nowadays, it would make more sense to simply have Tobey play Reilly as well. Unless they are going to try to do what the comic book failed at, and have Tobey and Dunst ride off into the sunset after this movie and give Grace the reigns for Spider-Man 4?
And isn't this the movie where we get the resolution on the Osbourne saga? If we have Green Goblin II, Mysterio, and Haden Church all playing villains, I can only wonder if this won't be some Sinister Six type plot.

They had better not even consider The Clone Saga, or anything to do with the word "clone," or Haden Church as the Jackal or any such insanity. The Clone Saga was the biggest disaster in the history of comics. I cannot think of another way to as effectively torpedo not just the Spider-Man series but comic movies as a whole to introduce this tripe.
Raimi has said he has no interest in putting Venom in his movies, and I say thank goodness for that. Spider-Man has such a great gallery of villains and supporting characters, we don't have to reach for the bad ones.
After his turn in Sideways, I think Church would make a great Sandman, and the fights with Sandman could be great and different visually.
Yeah I'm with Alpha Dog on this one, in my opinion Church would be awesome in that role and it would definately lead to some visually attractive fight scenes.
Also MTV.com has rumours that Church will indeed step into the Sandman role.
Well everyone just assumes that Tobey Maguire is going to quit after the third one. I never heard him arbritarily say that Spider-man 3 will be his last time in the role. My hope is that the continues playing the character beyond Spider-man 3.
Not sure what to make of this news. Now I'm trying to think of what character Grace would be best suited to play. Ben Reilly is an avenue they shouldn't even consider going down. Hopefully not GABRIEL OSBORN either.

Topher as Hobgoblin? Huh? I can see him much more as spindly FX guru Quentin Beck than I can see him as middle-aged fashion designer Roderick Kingsley or as tough-ass mercenary Macendale. Unless Raimi decides to actually make Ned Leeds the Hobgoblin in the movies.....
So there I am, in Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, at about 3 o'clock in the morning, looking for one thousand brown M&Ms to fill a brandy glass, or Ozzy wouldn't go on stage that night. So, Jeff Beck pops his head 'round the door, and mentions there's a little sweets shop on the edge of town. So - we go. And - it's closed. So there's me, and Keith Moon, and David Crosby, breaking into that little sweets shop, eh. Well, instead of a guard dog, they've got this bloody great big Bengal tiger. I managed to take out the tiger with a can of mace, but the shopkeeper and his son... that's a different story altogether. I had to beat them to death with their own shoes. Nasty business, really, but sure enough I got the M&Ms, and Ozzy went on stage and did a great show.--- Del Preston

Roger Stern created the Hobgoblin with the idea that he was secretly one of the characters in Spider-Man's supporting cast, but he never told anyone at Marvel who that character was supposed to be. Stern sat on the secret until he was ready to unmask Hobgoblin, but he left Marvel before he could tell that story. Without Stern's plan to work from, Hobgoblin was revealed to have been Ned Leeds, after Leeds's death and the debut of the second Hobgoblin, Jason Macendale.
Then in 1997, Stern was given the chance to do a three-issue miniseries which made the point that Ned Leeds couldn't be the Hobgoblin, because Leeds had been killed by men who wouldn't have stood a chance against someone with Hobby's enhanced strength. In Spider-Man: Hobgoblin Lives, Stern re-opens the mystery by having the original Hobgoblin come out of retirement to kill Jason Macendale. The leading suspects from the '80s are reintroduced and Spider-Man finally unmasks the Hobgoblin, revealing him to be the guy Stern had in mind all along, Roderick Kingsley.
Ain't It Cool is reporting that Topher might end up being Venom after all, with the denials from production all being some hope of mis-direction.
Eh, I'm just worried Venom would end up making a lot of people say "You know, I bought the goblin guy, and the dude with the four metal arms, but this is just too much..."

Yeah well AICN also reported that the Lizard was in the second movie, Mary Jane was going to marry John at the end, and John would become Man-wolf. And how is Topher Grace going to play Venom? Yeah right.

"Edge and Lita may be one thing, but take away Adam's steriods and what would he be? What would be the odds of seeing the black spidey suit in the movie(s)? I think that, with the proper lighting and textures, it could prove to look really bad ass.
