They don't know how to cover him... generally, I think they media was far more ready to cover a candidate like Kerry, Gephardt, or Lieberman than were someone like Dean. But Dean's personality is a bit more unconverntional.
And typically, the media is really bad at making ideological distinctions outside of party lines.
In terms of election delays, 9/11 is the precedent. The NY Mayoral Primary was occurring on that day, and it was stopped a few hours in, as for some reason keeping the polls open that day didn't make sense. The primary was then held on 9/25.
