They don't know how to cover him... generally, I think they media was far more ready to cover a candidate like Kerry, Gephardt, or Lieberman than were someone like Dean. But Dean's personality is a bit more unconverntional.

And typically, the media is really bad at making ideological distinctions outside of party lines.
