Terrible news for Stewart. I hope he'll be OK and recover quickly but from the sound of things, he's likely out for a while and his chances of being in the chase are reduced drastically. I know from reading the articles that people are questioning why was he racing in a sprint race. Well, he's a racer's racer, he'll race almost anything. That why so many of his fans love him. I don't think even after this he is going to stop racing outside of NASCAR all together.

The real question I think we have to ask is how can we make these sprint car races and tracks safer. There have now been at least 3 deaths I know of this year involving sprint car races, including Jason Leffler. One of the deaths just occurred this past weekend and I get the feeling that Stewart, as bad as his injuries are, may had been very lucky not to join that list. If this was happening on NASCAR's own tracks and races, I would think there would be a huge outcry for safety, just like after Dale Sr.'s passing in the 2001 Daytona 500.

You *could* look at it that way, or you could say Tony Stewart has been airborne in a sprint car four times in a month and walked away uninjured three times, and then you could add up all the other sprint car wrecks Tony's had and come up with a very small percentage of his crashes that resulted in injury.

This statement ignores the fact that NASCAR had three fatal accidents in 2000, but didn't get fired up about fixing things until after Dale Sr. died at Daytona the following year.

Maybe these seven fatal sprint car crashes in 14 months will spur change, but I'd expect nothing much to change unless a real racing "star" (like Stewart, obviously) perishes in one of these crashes.

Having said all that....Mad Max Papis!

Unfortunately, I think you're right about that. Regarding the fact about the deaths of Adam Petty and others before Dale Sr., I would hope NASCAR and other racing series have learned from that and would be more proactive in improving the safety of the sport. But that is part of the problem: people won't care unless it's a 'name' driver. I honestly don't know what can be changed about the sprint cars and the tracks they run on to make them safer but I just think that many deaths in such a short period of time should at least be enough to create some dialogue instead of just saying 'no biggie' until someone famous dies.

In the end, it just seems to me that most people are questioning Stewart for racing so much instead of the conditions of the series he and others are racing in. Do we really want anyone else, name or no name, dying? Obviously not.

I can't get too excited about his racing, but it would be worth the price of admission if he loses it again and starts slapping other drivers upside the head like he did at the Nationwide race at Road America earlier this year.
