I didn't realize until I read today and then later heard on ESPN that Tony was doing color commentary.

Is this in addition to his much-ballyhooed becoming the coach at SD State?

I love Tony, but I wouldn't say he has a good "tv/radio voice." Certainly he should have plenty of anecdotal/analytical material.

Yes, he's commentating in addition to coaching SD St. He just did the St. Louis/Colorado game, and I thought he was fine. ESPN actually just threw him into the fire with little to no practice. They basically said...you're getting Jon Miller, Tony, have at it.

I was discussing this while watching the game.

I actually thought that it was a good idea to put him in with someone experienced like Miller, who could draw stuff out without pulling teeth.

Gwynn is an assistant coach this year at SDSU - he takes over full time next year.

I wouldn't say he has a good "tv/radio voice" either. He sounds like Carlton from "Fresh Prince", or maybe Professor Frink :-) But at least he has intelligent things to say, which is so rare among announcers that who cares what his voice is like.

He's gotta be better than Miller and Morgan during the Indians/Angels game Sunday night. Man, those two had some rust on them.

Ideally, TGwynn will tell more Rickey stories in his future telecasts. There's nothing funnier than TGwynn telling Rickey stories.

I remember a Rickey story from the Union Tribune...

San Diego was up somethign rediculous like 20-7 in an Expos game in Montreal last year. Rickey asked to be pulled from the game so that he could go get Chinese food. It turns out that his favorite Chinese restaurant was in Montreal.

Anyway, long story short - it was a sushi place.

Rickey is the man!

I only watched a little of the St. Louis/Colorado game. Nothing stuck out to me about Tony Gwynn's color commentary. Though now I wish I did listen so I could hear some Ricky stories. My favorite was him playing cards with Bobby Bonilla at the end of Game 6 of the 1999 NLCS between the Mets/Braves. Keep in mind the Mets we're struggling to come back one more time, and the two "veterans" are more intrested in playing cards. Needless to say the Mets fan have no love lost for Ricky after that one.

The punchlines to my two favorite Rickey stories:

1. "tenure? I got 20 year."

2. "I played with a guy in Toronto that wore a helmet too."

The actual quote was "You know, I played with a guy in New York that wore a helmet in the field too" and the supposed reply was "Yeah, RIckey, that was me, and we were teammates in Toronto, too."

Of course, it's come out since then that the story was completely fabricated. It was a great story while it was there.

A guy in USA Today was a bit harsh last week. He said something like "It's great to hear a woman's voice commentating male sports on ESPN, but does the voice have to belong to Tony Gwynn?" Ouch
