Alot of the sports entertainment stuff worked for me this week. James Mitchell is fine as the worlds shittiest late night Horror Video host and I dug him as guy saying "roll the tape" thats fine use of him. Unfrotunately he was in the video too. Video itself was fine. Abyss throwing Christian in the pool wasn't going to make me forget Hak throwing Kanyon into the pool. The video would be a nice way to set up a pool based match. Unfrotunately the PPV match won't be in a pool. As either a FMW pool style match or a Nitro Spring Breakout pool style match could be entertaining. No pool and you're just left with Abyss vs. Christian in a match in a cage. Ehh! The other big sports entertainment section was the big ending Steiner/Sting in ring surrounded by all of Sting's Dudes With Attitudes. I like 3D but they probably aren't as good as DWA era Steiner Brothers. Killings is better than DWA era JYD. Styles is better than any era Orndorf. And Rhino is better than El Gigante. So yeah... why not?...that works.
Oddly, this was kind of a good show overall. None of the sports entertainment bits were objectionably bad and none of the wrestling was objectionably bad. Kind of everything was good. Nothing spectacular or really memorable but everything was fine. Weird for them to run the James Gang vs. AMW in the middle of a show that way. As that really feels like the kind of thing that you build to a PPV match. If your tag partner is Billy Gunn, you shouldn’t be making “Brokeback Mountain”jokes at your opponents. Billy Gunn is also still doing the Stinger splash in a fed that has Sting…which just makes no sense. Jackie Gayda for abused valet is the world’s shittiest Que Monito. And the Jackie Gayda vs. Gail Kim sections of this were really bad. Is Gayda contagious? I don’t remember Gail Kim’s face looking this ugly before, as she really looked like Gail Gayda in this. Odd watching these two women grab at each other as they really both looked too ugly faced to be in a catfight video. Uglier faced than XPW valets. Who is doing the make up for TNA? There is no reason for the valets to have rougher looking faces than women who’ve gone through gauntlets of men in clown costumes urinating in their rectum. But if you ignore all that the match itself was good. Chris Harris is surprisingly great at eating ex-WWE guys offense and he makes a leg takedown look brutal in this. I also really liked James Storm’s anger at someone wasting his beer, I freak out whenever the busboy approaches my glass. The four way match was also fine. I went into that match with a lot of fear. I mean how many #-way matches with Sonjay Dutt is TNA gonna run. Thankfully they essentially worked this tag style. Match was paced like a tag instead of like a 3-way and that gave it some actual form. I really enjoyed Aex Shelley working a guy who makes mistakes and builds match around mistakes in this. I watched a lot of Arn Anderson during the Dustin Rhodes project and the guy who makes errors is something I enjoy. Finish was good but again they really need to mix some new blood in the Daniels v. AJ vs. Joe feud. Stupid booking. But yeah match itself was fine, so matches all work this week too. Well all matches outside of opening one.
WHAT DIDN'T WORK:
JB gets darker and darker every week as he trolls Florida tanning salons. "Please let Vince show up at this one, please let him show me his cell phone pics." He's gone from being darker than Gail Kim to darker than Jay Lethal.
Damnit why do they keep on putting Chris Daniels on play by play? Does anyone think he's good at that? there are ways to take advantage of Daniels strengths. This isn't one.
"TEAM 3D NATION"flags???? "TEAM 3D NATION" flags!!!! Are they doing a bunch of international dates that require them to have a "3D NATION"Flag for the 3D v. Canada feud? "TEAM 3D NATION"??? I expect we will get an angry "One Warrior Nation"editorial. 3D essentially squashed Young and Roode last week. Team 3D are angry and again get to beat down Young and Roode as revenge for beating down Young and Roode last week?? Dámore is absolutely shitty on the mic and reminds you of why you shouldn't have an in ring character n your booking committee. Mike Tenay puts over the talking point that booking comittee wants gotten over "they burried them under the Maple Leaf"...a minute later Scott Dámore says "we burried them under the Maple Leaf". It's shitty.
Well, I'm piggybacking a little here to talk about this week's Impact, but I figure there's no need to start a new thread.
This was a very good week wrestling wise, with Styles/Abyss and the X Games qualifer both very good. For once they didn't ruin the wrestling with way too many ad breaks. BUT they really brought the stupid.
The big guy interrupting the cruiserweight matches and squashing everybody has NEVER been a good idea, and it's an even worse idea when you're a smaller promotion where most of your fans care more about the cruiser jobbers than about Steiner anyway. Not only stupid, but played out, too.
You're going to tease me with an arm wrestling match and then make me pay for it at the PPV? And it's got a 66 year old man in it? You're kidding, right?
And, finally, if you're going to tell a gay wrestler that you're not hiring him because you're afraid that the audience might chant "faggot" at him, you better damn sure make sure your own wrestlers--your own FACE wrestlers, no less--aren't using anti-gay slurs in their promos. Thank you.
I'd bet that Cena holds the US championship this year with occasional skirmishes in the WWE title scene. If Cena keeps evolving like he has been, he'll probably have a small run with the big belt in late '04 / early '05.
