WHAT WORKED:

YOWZA that may be the first time an IMPACT was worse than RAW. I mean I like Chavo too much to watch him stuck in a match against HHH and well didn’t watch the RAW main event but still. I mean I guess if I was going to compliment TNA this week I could say that the video package setting up everyone’s motivations for three way dance was nicely done. I don’t like three way dances and first one with these three fell apart after the 13 minute mark but nice video package setting it up. Styles was effective on the mic getting over throwing in the towel to protect Daniels was emotionally difficult. On the other hand this fed really fucks up everything they do. And so two minutes before they have AJ Styles talk about how throwing in the towel for Christopher Daniels was the “hardest thing I ever had to do”, Buh-Buh Ray Dudley tells us that choosing what tag team to work is “the hardest decision me and my brother have ever had to make in our careers”. Yeah right there they pretty much killed the effectiveness of the video package. It’s a pre-taped show…but it’s like they have no one editing it. Really fucked it up enough that I considered putting the whole Dudleys' mic work followed by video package on bottom half. Inexcusable. And I guess I could say that the squashes were nicely done. HEY KIDS ITS SQUASHES!!! Jay Lethal vs. Jarrett may have been better than Jay Lethal vs. Abyss. But for a match under two minutes gets absolutely smoked by Finlay v. Spanky. D-Von used to have a really shitty lariat but absolutely wastes the jobber Ric Steiner style here. Buh-Buh throws five suplexes in a 90 second squash? When exactly did the Dudleys become the Steiner Brothers? Squashes didn’t help anybody. The squashes were sandwiched around angles. And the angles that squashes were built around were awful.

WHAT DIDN’T WORK:

HEY KIDS ITS SQUASHES!!! Jay Lethal vs. Jarrett may have been better than Jay Lethal vs. Abyss. But for a match under two minutes gets absolutely smoked by Finlay v. Spanky. D-Von used to have a really shitty lariat but absolutely wastes the jobber Ric Steiner style here. Buh Buh throws five suplexes in a 90 second squash? When exactly did the Dudleys become the Steiner Brothers? Squashes didn’t help anybody. And the angles that squashes were built around were awful. Really? Really deciding which tag team you want to face is a gut wrenching decision? And like I said that angle just shits on the AJ/Joe/Daniels angle. Crowd wants three way dance..but management won’t let it happen…but management indifferent about X division three ways? And well the angle that was wrapped around Jarrett v. Lethal is even shittier. If you thought Jackie Gayda mic work was bad…wait till you see her miming. They’re wrestling in a studio and Gayda is emoting to the back of the Tokyo Dome. Gail Kim’s emoting in response was also pretty embarrassing.

HOLY FUCK DOES MATT BENTLEY SUCK!!!! I mean Lance Hoyt looked better eating stuff and on offense in his last match than Bentley does. Bentley is sub Lance Hoyt. Smoked in ring by the likes of Billy Gunn. This is a pre recorded show. A PRE RECORDED SHOW. There should be someone editing it together. Buh-Buh says something is the hardest decision he’s ever made…you either don’t run the video package where another wrestler talks about his hardest decision immediately afterwards…or you edit in stock footage of crowd cheering and clip BUh-Buh saying that during his segment. Matt Bentley shits all over a match. You either cut the match out entirely or you clip this match: only show Bentley’s entrance, a shot of crowd, a reaction shot from Next Generation, reaction shot from Jerry Lynn, reaction shot from Hebner and the choke. You have extra time, stick in a Xplosion match. Post production work…it’s not a live show…no reason not to take advantage of it.

I guess I liked Jim Mitchell’s pin striped suit and Rhino had two good looking punches and one nice bump but this was never-ending and not good. They really need a houseshow circuit for these guys to learn how to work against each other before putting this on TV. I don’t get the no contest finish as a count out might set up a falls count anywhere or a streetfight…what does this set up. "Ooh if you thought these two couldn’t get back up after a bump wait till you see them when they’re deprived of light and water for a week." The Jim Mitchell mic work setting this up was hokey. They’re working a Christian wrestling fed angle on RAW now…and well Jim Mitchell really comes off second rate when you watch Vince. It’s the difference between watching someone in a Devil costume for Halloween and witnessing the actual Devil at work.

YOU STILL GOT IT!!!
YOU STILL GOT IT!!!
I mean Sting was never known for his dynamic mic work so you get what you pay for but…

“YOU STILL GOT IT” may be the worst chant in the history of bad wrestling chants. So when Schneider first proposed the 80s project I wasn’t really interested and I offered a counterproposal of doing a 80s studio wrestling project. When I think of 80s US wrestling what I think of is studio wrestling. As a lot of what is available is either footage of complete studio matches (or TV matches from Irish Boys and Girls club, etc) or clipped arena matches. I was watching a lot of Joe Blanchard’s promotion at the time and struck by how much more I was digging the studio matches which were worked really tight to the looser arena matches. Thinking about the difference between un-amplified string band and or jazz music and arena bands and what not. People have written a lot nostalgically about studio wrestling angles but I haven’t seen alot written about the actual way matches were worked in studios…the difference between WWE,FLA, Memphis, Georgia, SE Texas studio matches. And really thought it would be interesting thing to look at from today’s perspective as studio wrestling is completely dead at this point with the exception of Memphis and TNA. So the point is I like me some studio wrestling and think that there are some advantages to the form. I’ve written in the past that I don’t think that TNA takes advantage of these. I’ve written that one of the advantages of broadcasting from same location instead of being a touring SUPERSHOW is the possibility of local color. I’ve written about Dogme. They’ve ignored that idea of local color. I think on some level I’ve been alone in that criticism. As Meltzer and the sheet writers all were really impressed with the look of the show and the move from Nashville Fairgrounds to Universal Studios. Russo was on WOL the other week mocking the old Nashville Fairgrounds and how there were farm animals out back. In the latest Observer writing about MTV’s search for wrestling commentators Meltzer wrote: “Every time I’ve seen a TV company get into wrestling and attempt to hire based on look with no regard to ability to do the job, you end up with game show looking wrestling that has no heart and nobody cares about.” And listening to the Universal crowd chant “YOU STILL GOT IT” really felt like I was watching a game show looking wrestling promotion that has no heart (and I really don’t care about)…actually less like a gameshow and more like a infomercial as “YOU STILL GOT IT” feels like something the studio audience would shout at Ron Popeil as he shows them a new invention. Popeil would show them the new RONCO product and on cue “YOU STILL GOT IT!” “YOU STILL GOT IT!!” And while nothing inherently wrong with infomercials tonight’s’ episode really wasn’t as dramatic or entertaining as most Popeil ones.

But wait there’s more.
