My God, if you're gonna rip something off, at least have the decency to wait a few years and hope people forget about the thing you're copying!

I know. I keep trying to tell Weird Al that his songs would be much more popular if he'd hold onto them for a few years before he released them.

I perhaps should have made a slight differentiation between the terms "ripping off" and "parodying". Somehow I don't think humor was what TNA had in mind when they put this together.

I disagree. The WWE spent a month hyping a mysterious event that ended up being the return of someone who had only been off TV for three months.

A few days later, TNA has someone who's also returning after having only been off TV for three months. Except TNA's person was rumored to have signed with the WWE and many people believed was the person in the WWE's hype videos.

That was absolutely a parody.

When the best defense for your "Surprise of the Year" is that it works for Weird Al ... well, that speaks volumes, huh?

Uh... I think you missed the point. I don't think "TNA parodies a WWE video." was the surprise.

WWE is selling out arenas and doing 3+ ratings each week.
TNA gives away tickets to Impact and barely does 1.5 each week.

If it really was a parody (which I doubt), you'd think instead they'd focus on making their own product better, first.

Plus, WWE never sold it as the most shocking event ever, really.

Parody or not, I'm certain that upon completion of the clip, the TNA crew were laughing their asses off and slapping high fives all around.

Neither did TNA. They said it was the surprise of the year. Considering the person returning to TNA was just rumored to have signed with the WWE a couple of weeks ago, I'd say that qualifies it as a surprise. And according to the spoilers, which I inadvertently stumbled across on Wikipedia, when the person returns on the date shown in the video, they do a hell of a lot more than stand in the middle of the ring and play charades.

I don't think WWE ever intended for us to think that the 2/21/11 video was for Sting. That was all the IWCs doing. Isn't the word from the dirtsheets that WWE never even made an offer to Sting?

WWE had not talked to Sting before those videos started to air. Once the internet went Sting Crazy, they did check in with him, but it doesn't sound like it ever got serious.

However, TNA didn't appear to have much particular interest in bringing back Sting either until people went Sting Crazy, so I hope Sting's return promo includes a big thanks to Twitter or a donation to the EFF or something.

I'm just confused by the notion that a video hyping some event on 3/3/11 is a bigger Surprise (Of The Year) than the actual event on 3/3/11.

You can make inferences from the video, sure, but you don't know who or what it actually advertises until you watch Impact on 3/3/11 (unless you read spoilers).

Parody? It was a tribute to their heroes. They're trying to coattail ride with someone they deluded themselves into thinking was a hot act based on the inter-net's interest in seeing him in one possible match in one possible setting. They're nuts.

Oh, they are not and you know it. I'll concede they are doing 3 pluses each week for RAW, but they're also counting each hour of RAW each hour of SD, NXT and Superstars, and presenting that as the number of people they reach during a given week. They made less money this year than last, and the company philosophy seems to be to spew misrepresentation and hyperbole. If your point is: TNA is infinitely less popular than WWE then by all means say that. But let's not be intellectually dishonest and portray WWE as a company that is doing well right now.

Gasp! Are you imlpying that TNA would ever ride the coat-tails of a wrestler, or faction, or angle that another; more successful wrestling promotion had previously produced?

That's just so unlike TNA...

Exactly. It was definitely a parody, but parody of what? OF WWE doing what they always do with an Undertaker return? They aired a few video packages, and even made it clear (to anyone with half a brain, at least) in the second two that it was UT who was returning.

I mean, I'm sure TNA got a big laugh out of it like CRZ said, but it's more mocking the fans who got convinced that Sting was coming to WWE than it is WWE itself. And given TNA's past reputation for failing to deliver on hyped surprises, it's probably best not to waste this kind of hype on something that's solely designed to take yet another weak shot at the promotion which could crush you if it even cared about your existence.

Christ. More and more I find myself actually rooting for these bozos' failure.

EDIT: And reading the spoilers for next week, they've also made a mockery of the idea that this Fortune turn was a)planned and b)designed to put the young guys on top as faces.

The thing is, there was talk of Sting in WWE before the first promo aired. So, when the mysterious first promo aired, fans (including myself, I know I'm guilty here) took a guess that it might be Sting. That's what you do with a mystery, you try to figure out what it means.

What would have really been clever of TNA is for them to run this promo that same week. But they didn't even lock up Sting again until fans started clamoring for him in WWE.

I have no idea how to feel about this. Yes, it is TNA trying to one up the big dog of WWE and possibly failing. Yet, it is kinda funny that TNA saw what the fans were doing online as well as WWE subtly planting the seeds of Sting coming to them and pretty much turned it into a joke. You can blame the IWC for creating the fan frenzy for Sting which is true, but WWE doesn't mind that buzz, hell its better then a fan watching thinking "Oh, Taker is coming back and what do you know just in time for Mania, shocking. Whats on the NFL network." The Sting talk helped sell the 2/21/11 and I do think they changed their plans of having someone on the level of HHH being Taker's foe at Mania then Wade or Kane.. In reality, they wanted Brock and Dana White said no

I just find it funny how people go on and on about how Vince is the only game in town and Sting after almost 30 years of being in this business even with a giant payday at times has told him, no. After reading the spoilers, while I don't agree with what happens, it is a bigger deal then Taker and HHH miming their way through 15 minutes while the crowd hypes themselves up for a fight they will have to pay $65 to see.

It would also legitimately piss off the thousands of fans, both there in attendance and watching at home, who went apeshit for Rey's big win last night.
