Came out this week. Anyone else have it? I know I'm not the only TMBG fan on the board.

I'm rarely disappointed by the band, and this is no exception. I can kind of do without some of the Flansburgh pieces (It's Kickin' In and Damn Good Times), but even those are growing on me.

I gotta sleep, and thus shant post more in-depth thoughts now, but I wanted to post this before I forgot about it; somebody help me get a discussion going here ;)

Good Lord, common ground.

I was a bit disappointed with it on first listen. It was good, but didn't blow me away. It gets better every single time I hear it, though.

Have you seen the Strong Sad directed video for Experimental Film over on Homestar Runner?

EDIT: Yep, I guess you have.

"There are limits to my comedy. There are things that I'll never laugh at. The handicapped - because there's nothing funny about them. Or any deformity. It's like when you see someone look at a little handicapped and go 'Ooh, look at him. He's not able-bodied. I am. I'm prejudiced.' Yeah, well, at least the little handicapped fella is able-minded. Unless he's not. It's difficult to tell with the wheelchair ones."

I got to see TMBG twice this weekend, they did back to back shows in Dallas. As expected, they played a lot of tracks from The Spine, and a lot of them went over well live. Experimental Film is an automatic lock for future tour setlists. Damn Good Times, Prevenge, and Au Contraire got a good response too, as did Stalk of Wheat. Some of the songs are a little slow for the live show, but they're still good for home listening. They also played a blistering version of The Spine Surfs Alone, from the Ep they have available for download at theymightbegiants.com They're also planning on releasing the Dallas show or shows for download at their site, hopefully soon, because I want to own my own copy. The Spine, as an album, is a step back from some of the stuff they did on Mink Car, but they're still great tunes, and I still listen to it 3 hours a night at work. If they're coming to a club near you, SEE THEM!!! Especially if Corn Mo is still opening for them. He got his start in Dallas, and he is a musical genius and a delight to see live.

I had much the same reaction. I liked it on first listen, but wasn't blown away (except, perhaps, by "Raincoat.") It does continue to grow on me, though. I don't know if I'm just de-sensitized to TMBG because of the sheer volume of material they release on an almost-daily basis, or if this album just didn't live up to past standards, or what.

Probably doesn't help that I have the Indesctructable Object EP, on which two of the Spine tunes appear.

That`s a pretty good way to put it. I feel like this album (and to a lesser extent Mink Car) seems more like a collection of good, random TMBG songs than a solid, coherent album. I still like it, but I think the proliferation of Their MP3 demo releases sort of does hurt things.

I used to love them but I lost kinda lost touch with them about 10-12 years ago. Apollo 18 was the last thing I got from them.

I am just glad they didn't make a No! Part 2.
