Well, that's an interesting set of choices, to say the least.
I'm no fan of Bill Gates. Although he and Melinda do some decent charity work, they've also contributed significantly to the Discovery Institute - the wonderful group largely behind the Intelligent Design movement. That's HUGE mark against them in my book.
Bono, in my opinion, gets a really bad rap for the work he does. But person of the year? I guess I'm okay with it.

Decent? (seattlepi.nwsource.com) This guy could do pretty much anything short of promote human sacrifices or go on a killing spree and it would still be outweighed by his charitiable contributions. If you think that giving to someone that promotes ID negates that or only makes his philanthropy "decent", that's a screwed up order of priorities.
Bono? Meh, I don't necessarily agree with everything he does, but at least unlike other Hollywood/celebrity "activists" he's actually doing something worthwhile. I don't know if he should be man of the year, but I do believe his heart is in the right place. | Big Bad

|  #3 Posted on 18.12.05 1924.55 | Instant Rating: 4.95 | I think it's interesting that Time, in recent years, has turned away from their original intent of the award, which was to recognize the year's biggest newsmaker (this is why people like Hitler and Stalin have won in the past). It's become a somewhat tamer 'good' person of the year honour, but it's still quite a feather in one's cap.
As a big U2 fan, I heartily support Bono being recognized, but I kind of selfishly hope that his humanitarian work doesn't continue to interfere too much with the band's recording schedule.
"Oh, gosh, you know, I'm not much on speeches, but it's so gratifying to leave you wallowing in the mess you've made. You're screwed, thank you, bye."
