It looks like the Tigers have started to part out their expensive team ... a year later than most people thought Click Here (sports.espn.go.com)

Granderson should be a slight upgrade over Melky in center, but Edwin Jackson going from AL to the NL West should be the real winner here if he can keep from tiring out towards the end of the season again.

The Tigers make out alright depending on what you think of Scherzer going from NL to AL and how much you believe in Yankee 'top prospects', but this trade is probably only the first domino to fall in what will surely be a tough year for Tigers fans watch.

Granderson is way more than just a slight upgrade over Melky. The Yankees filled in one of their few lineup holes in a major way with this deal. That said, giving up both Austin Jackson and Ian Kennedy is a big price given that both guys are considered to be strong prospects.

Also, I'm surprised to see Arizons cutting bait on Scherzer so quickly. They might know something the Tigers don't.

The rich are about to get much richer. If the Tigers are serious about completely cleaning out their house, I imagine Miguel Cabrera will be next to go. And the Red Sox will be first in line to scoop him up.

This has to be depressing for the Tigers fanbase. Their team had the division lead in September, lost that lead in October, and now the team gets blown up in December. Why would Jim Leyland bother to stay for this crap?

This is their year and not Detroit's? Apparently the Dodgers aren't going to do much, so Arizona must feel they're close enough to ship Scherzer and Schlereth (future closer material, purportedly) off in search of two MLB-caliber (at least) starters.

FWIW, I was hearing (on ESPN) this afternoon that Melky is staying on, moving to a corner spot, and Damon is the odd-man out here. So the Yankees gain the incremental improvement in CF defense of Granderson > Cabrera, and the defensive improvement of Cabrera > Damon. Plus (or minus) the difference of Granderson vs Damon in the Yankee lineup, and about $7.5 million extra to spend elsewhere.

I'm not going to try and make that calculation, only to point out that Damon is not a traditional power-hitting/RBI LFer, but didn't the Yanks already lead the league in HR? Granderson's .344 lifetime OBA might not be such an upgrade to the lineup.

Melky is an upgrade in left. At least he doesn't throw like a girl.
Granderson has plenty of speed, and a decent glove to patrol centerfield. This is a win/win.

Does this mean that Matsui stays as DH and Damon leaves?

Is this a secret plot by the Royals to be competitive?

Indians decimated. Check
Tigers fire sale. Check

Now they need the Twins to get stupid and they could win the division with 65 wins.

Seriously, the AL Central looks weaker than this year unless the young talent is ahead of schedule.

I still stand by the idea that the Royals will trade Greinke at the trade deadline next year, no matter how utterly stupid such a move would be.

I wouldn't be so sure that the Red Sox are a sure thing since they are somewhat full at the corner infielder/ DH spot. The Angels now have a glaring hole at third base, although I don't know how deep their minor league system is right now.

Maybe it's the Twins' secret plot to get Joe Mauer re-signed. "Look Joe, our opponents are morons. We can get on a run of division titles here, or you can go to the AL East and slug it out every year."

Am I crazy, or would Vlad Guerrero in the DH slot for the Twins make them a contender to actually get to the playoffs and maybe win a round? With the new stadium coming to life and Cheap Carl being dead, maybe the Twins will finally get that other bat they have desperately needed in their line-up.

I'd argue the Twins need an impact starter more than they need an impact bat. And at his age, I'm not sure you can call Vladdy a true impact bat anymore anyway.

It pains me so much to say this. Congratulations to the Boston RedSox on winning the 2007 World Series. 2 World Championships in 4 years, and my Yankees seem to be stuck in choke mode...dang! I hope Boston is paying Francona well.
