Our cafeteria has closed down AGAIN. It really shouldn't come as much of a surprise given that there really aren't enough people working here to support any kind of food-related endeavours, but I did enjoy not having to make any kind of decisions about what I was going to eat for lunch. It was almost like clockwork - Monday was pasta (invariably spaghetti or lasagna), Tuesday was Oriental (invariably some kind of spicy meat over rice), Wednesday was SURPRISE! (invariably a Chef's Salad I didn't want, so I'd have to have the cold sandwich...or else it was Sloppy Joes, or sausages, or God knows what). Every meal came with a salad, no matter how much salad clashed with the entree. Sometimes I would get a cookie. It was run by two little old Korean ladies who always commented on my ties - and perhaps inspired me to start posting them here, who knows? - and apparently worried that I wasn't quite fat enough because they always would give me extra garlic bread, or free soup (potato leek was the best), or more parmesan, or more Sloppy Joe than would fit on the bun, or more cashews on my "kung pao chicken," &c. Or maybe it was because nobody ever bought any lunch so they were just trying to keep from having to throw lots of stuff out. Nah, surely it was my natural grace and charm - and ties
Anyway, our lunch option is now - get this - a TRUCK will drive by between 1130 and 1200, and we're all supposed to go OUTSIDE to pay for food. I kinda doubt this'll last very long... tho' I might go out there today and see what they've got... and then laugh and get nothing. It's probably back to HOT SLASH LEAN POCKETS for me! Sure, I'll probably save money in the long run, but where's the HUMAN CONTACT?
The tie *must* have come from Woolco, right? I kinda like the Egyptian/Aztec slave labourors motif. Seems quite appropriate for work.
On the lunch front, I'm shocked, suprised & somewhat saddened that the prime shift lunch ritual doesn't include a little hole-in-the-wall Thai, Vietnamese, Indian or other spicy ethnic restaurant. Where you can get some proper programmer food. After all, that's the best part about taking a software gig in San Jose -- the lunch food is great!
(One of the places we used to go, one of the guys I used to work with ... Every time we went there, he'd have the braised goat over rice, just so he could announce "Mmmm, that's some good goat!" I tried it once -- indeed it was good goat.)
On a related note, you have it really good as far as your commissary goes. I'm quite afraid to eat anything from mine except for the stuff that used to come from the Atlanta Bread Factory fresh each morning...but unfortunately the DOT terminated their agreement with them, so no more walking into work and grabbing an asiago bagel.
But the cafeteria stuff just doesn't look appetizing at ALL. Which is probably why I brown-bag a sandwich most days. Either that or go to one of my lunch nooks. There are some good ones right by FSU.

Dunno - if there was a label, it's gone now. When in doubt, guess Penneys. ;-) I CAN tell you it's "100% POLYESTER RN 25753" and there's a fleur de lis on the piece of fabric you're supposed to tuck the tail behind. Also, I have a shirt this EXACT colour to wear with it, as this low quality photo demonstrates:

Well, I don't program much, I guess. I'm not really down with the crowded lunch scene (if it still is - everybody got laid off but supposedly the job market's coming back?) and would prefer to sit at my desk until it's time to come home. Even when I went to the cafeteria, I'd just put it on a tray and come back here. Besides, the closest eateries here are Mr. Chau's, Wienerschnitzel, H Salt Esq. Fish & Chips, and McDonald's - not exactly high class fare. I think the most exotic we've ever gotten here is to go downtown to the brick oven pizzeria and flaunt XO's zero tolerance policy on booze with shameful brazenness by drinking not one but several Newcastle Ales with our lunch.
Originally posted by GrimisI always thought it should be criminal to wear a colored shirt with those bright white cuffs, and more than likely collar to go with it.
Man Grimis, if looking GOOD be a crime, then LOCK ME UP AND THROW AWAY THAT KEY, BABY
I've noticed (and who hasn't really?) that it's either love/hate and no inbetween with the concept of white collars. Me, I love 'em, yep. I used to call 'em "Tom Brokaw shirts" because he was the first guy I remember seeing them on and it seemed like he wore them alllllllllll the time. This shirt actually has FRENCH CUFFS! but you can't tell from the photo. I am pretty sure I mortify anyone who knows me when I wear stuff like this but, let's face it, that's part of the appeal. I only have two or three with white cuffs, but almost all my shirts have the collars if I could find 'em. Thanks, Burlington Coat Factory! I may spend more than I would at ROSS, but it's worth it!
Brokaw (and you I guess) seem to be the only ones left clinging to those shirts. I thought they went in style some time in the mid 90's and then out of style in the winter of what ever year it was.

No, you must bring a salad daddio. Low Carb is in vogue and it'll help balance the out of date shirt you're sportin'.
You're stuck buying lunch from a MaggotWagon? BWAHAHAHA. And here I thought that every Silicon Valley company had a Sun-like gourmet cafeteria on-premises. Musta gone out with the Aeron chairs, huh?
Now you get eat like a construction worker. Didn't you always wonder?
(Or go back to HOT SLASH LEAN POCKETS.)

We slipped a contractor's badge to the guy that delivered to the building next door (And let me tell you, if it wouldn't get me fired I'd go into detail on this one) but they deactivated it the next day.
Still, I wish I could have seen the guards as the guy badged in
Willful ignorance of science is not commendable. Refusing to learn the difference between a credible source and a shill is criminally stupid.
Back to the shirts with white collars & cuffs - never have owned any myself - i didn't think I needed any extra attention drawn to the extra weight in my face and neck that I thought the white collar brought - have since lost the weight and still don't wear that style of shirt.....and as for French Cuffs - I hate them - the only time I wear cuff links is when I wear a tux
