Today is the five-year anniversary of Brian Pillman's death. I read some Torch stuff on his life and surprisingly enough found myself unfamiliar to some of these references to Pillman's antics, and would greatly appreciate any gudicance that could be offered since he was one of my favorites. This was cut and pasted from

"He confused the veteran Bobby Heenan with his antics on live national television so much one night that Heenan swore and walked off the set."

Yes, if anyone remembers this, detail it please.

"His fake/shoot match with Kevin "Booker Man" Sullivan probably perplexed most fans, but for a time made him the most talked about figure in the business, and in the small world of insider fans."

I remember this looking fairly legit, but as I was not an insider fan at the time, how big a deal was this, back then?

"He out–extremed Extreme Championship Wrestling, causing a sensation among the fans with his first appearance in the ECW Arena, and proposing a videotape that would couple a match with "Franchise" Shane Douglas with softcore footage of Brian and his Penthouse Pet wife. He caused so much trouble backstage by never breaking his psycho persona, and by using the last forbidden ECW word to describe the Gangstas in an in-ring interview, that New Jack responded with an 18 minute in-ring tirade of his own that wrecked the night's show - and added to the legend of the "Loose Cannon."

What word was actually forbidden in ECW? And what was this debut-night sensation?

Just things I want know, everyone. Thanks for your time.

Who suspected he just might be gay,
he got moist around males,
and he painted his nails,
but his ass-f*cking gave it away."

I think the forbidden word was the "N" word which I choose not to repeat.

I remember watching this as it happened. During Pillman's match (it was a Clash of the Champions show, I believe), there was a point where Pillman was wandering on the outside to get back in the ring. He walked past the broadcast booth and shoved Heenan, I guess to build on his loose cannon gimmick. This caused Heenan to yell at Pillman, "What the f**k are you doing?!!" on the air. The expletive made it through uncensored. Heenan walked off for a couple of minutes to cool off before returning to the booth and apologizing to the viewers.

Just to add to that: Heenan's neck has always had a bit of a twinge to it stemming from the injury (can't remember what it was) that stopped him from being more active in-ring back in the good ol' days. Pillman, crazy sonovabitch that he wa,s grabbed Heenan roughly round the neck at the commentary booth, causing Heenan to freak out as detailed above. I guess it's understandable that he was pissed off, if he was worried that his old injury might be aggravated.

He attempted to while 'shooting' on the ECW crod. It was staged, but very well done, with Brian pulling a fan into the ring to attack him and Heyman screaming "He's shooting! He's shooting!". It was rather brilliant because the fans were understandably on his side until he started screaming how they and Eric Jerkoff were just a bunch of "smart marks".

The Kevin Sullivan thing was part of the "Loose Cannon" deal he had going. Apparently only Bischoff, Sullivan and Pillamn knew what was going to happen. It was Sullivan vs Pillman in a "Respect" match, much like the "I Quit" match in which someone has to say "I respect you" to lose the match. About 2 minutes in, Brian grabbed a microphone and shouted "I respect you, Mr. Bookerman" and ran out of the arena. This shocked the fans (most of whom did not know Sullivan was a 'booker' or what a 'booker' was) and the wrestlers in the back (I have heard a rumour that Hogan demanded Pillman be sacked for breaking kayfabe), many believing that Pillman had started living his life along the lines of his gimmick.

Meltzer is a weird entity. He is sorta like the Roger Ebert of Pro Wrestling if Ebert was much more interested and seeming to make a lot more money ie legitimacy by reviewing TV shows.
