Always fun. As always, this is all the Wrestling Observer lense of Mania plans.

- WWE told a major licensee not to emphasize the Rock right now, because "he will not be featured until 2015," leading to the assumption that he won't be doing Wrestlemania this year. If true, Rock skipping a year after headlining three straight Wrestlemanias is not the worst idea. Rock can recover from his torn everything, Brock is still under contract for Mania 2015 (San Jose/San Fran or Philadelphia), and Rock might be more special in a year -- he'll always be special, but with the extended run this year, it might not hurt to get away from the idea that he's just the Frosty the Snowman of Wrestlemania season.

- The fallback plan for Rock/Lesnar has always been Lesnar/Undertaker.

- Coincidentally or not with the Rock news, WWE and GOLDBERG are now in talks, as Triple H has moved from cutting conciliatory deals with Vince's enemies to cutting deals with his own (I guess Ultimate Warrior would be both). Goldberg is already in the 30 Years of Wrestlemania game even though he only worked one not-so-stellar match. Coincidentally or not with this news, Ryback, the guy who is still the recipient of Goldberg chants, is in line for a big heel push.

- As we've talked about here before, the longterm direction of the main angle was completely plotted out in June from now until Wrestlemania. It entails a Vince/HHH split, Vince turning babyface, and Vince bringing in a savior to fight for him in a match for control of the company. Their pipe dream is that Steve Austin will do it, but he's said nothing to indicate he would.

There's always the returning Cena, but Cena/HHH has been done at Mania already, and Cena saving the company because he loves us all is an eyeroller. It seems like Undertaker and his body feel cool with the one all-out match a year thing, so it's not like this is the last chance for Cena/Taker. Taker/Lesnar in their eyes is probably the nearest replacement for a Rock/Lesnar megamatch, and if you're going to do it, it should be before Lesnar loses anymore big matches. But if I'm putting together the card I want using the existing direction and positioning as guide, I would like ...

Cena vs. Undertaker: The Streak
Punk vs. Lesnar: The Rematch
Bryan vs. HHH: The Company

Because if the McMahon angle has to happen, then I'mma make it worth my while, and that means Vince McMahon has to endorse Bryan, Triple H has to lose to him, and the rub of all this goes to a new superstar to carry the company, just like, uh, Bobby Lashley.

I would probably be just as cool with swapping Punk and Bryan, same principles apply. Bryan vs. Lesnar on PPV seemed like a longshot even a month ago, now it seems like the best possible match WWE could offer in the ring. Maybe not a Wrestlemania match, but at some point.

This is probably also the year Punk or Bryan should win the Royal Rumble. So how about you borrow one of the 3 dates on Lesnar's 3rd year (the Extreme Rules one), have Bryan win the title from Orton in the fall, do Lesnar/Bryan at the Rumble, Lesnar wins the title and Punk wins the Rumble?

Orton is important again, so he has to figure into real plans for the first time in a few years. Sheamus vs. heel Orton has been planned for two years, so that works since it's hard to imagine extending the Bryan to Orton chase all the way to Mania. If he doesn't get to before then, Ziggler should finally win the world title for real here.

Goldberg jackhammers Ryback. Sting appears on the Raw after Wrestlemania to point a bat at the Undertaker.

What do YOU WANT? (This is not fantasy booking, obviously, it's exploratory science.)

well, Goldberg says definitely not

But you can hardly believe a wrestler, right? I'd sure like to see UT give the rub to someone who needs it if the streak ever ends. And to me, Vince's savior has got to be Sting.

I am going with Ziggler/Bryan, Lesnar/Taker and Cena/Punk. Why? I have no idea. I do think they will pull out all the stops for 30. I expect another Legends Battle Royal or something like Hogan vs Piper team match or the Legends vs Shield with an Austin in.

Cena vs Undertaker for the Streak.

Bryan wins the Rumble and finally gets the WWE Title back from Orton.

The Summer of Punk comes full circle as Vince turns to Punk to thwart HHH. Punk gets to beat HHH this time. Kevin Nash is nowhere to be seen.

Goldberg vs Ryback makes sense.

If Rock is taking a year off then that leaves Lesnar without a megastar opponent but that might not be a bad thing. They could use Lesnar to elevate someone to the next level. Ziggler would be an ideal candidate.

Don't know where they're headed with the WHC. Maybe Jericho can come back to challenge Del Rio.

A Shield/Wyatts six-man tag makes sense.

I'd like to see them bring back MITB as a WrestleMania staple but two MITB matches a year is probably enough. Unless they made the WrestleMania one be for a guaranteed shot against the World Heavyweight Champion at the following year's WrestleMania. The two MITB matches at the MITB PPV can still be for a title shot whenever the winner chooses, and the Rumble can be for a shot at the WWE Championship.

So...

Undertaker vs John Cena - The Streak
HHH vs CM Punk w/Vince - Control of the WWE
Randy Orton vs Daniel Bryan - WWE Championship
Alberto Del Rio vs Chris Jericho - World Heavyweight Championship
Brock Lesnar vs Dolph Ziggler
Goldberg vs Ryback
The Shield vs The Wyatt Family - Six Man Tag
WrestleMania Money In The Bank Ladder Match for a World Heavyweight Championship match at WrestleMania 31

This 'plan' of Vince (face) vs HHH (heel) for control of the company at WM30 seems weird to me. One would think the face would go over, but why have Old Man Vince win a battle for control in 2014?

Ryback/Goldberg sounds like a disaster, and I hope we can all avoid that iceberg. Ryback/Henry has better potential or Ryback/Sheamus if we need a hoss fight. I prefer Bryan/Sheamus fighting on behalf of Vince and Hunter with Cena challenging Taker because there's just no other mountain left to climb. But if I'm Hunter and I NEED someone to fight on my behalf, and I NEED that guy to win and win big, I go to Paul and make a deal with the devil to sic Lesnar on someone. And then Paul demanding his unholy due becomes the post-Mania story.

Love it!
YES!

WHAT?

YES!

WHAT?

Any question of the World Title should involve Damien Sandow and probably Dolph Ziggler.

Also, Henry / Ryback was literally just done this past Mania. Granted, with switched Face/Heel dynamics, but still. This makes me guess Big Show / Ryback for this year.

In some degree of awesome, the crowd chants Yes and No at Austin and What at D-Bry. Do this interaction at the post-Mania Raw.

Austin/Punk seems like something that could ultimately work, and has been hinted towards a few times. Austin on someone's podcast/Sirius radio show said Punk is the best guy in the business now, and the alluded to 'dream match' in WWE All-Stars. Plus, Austin would definitely be a Paul Heyman guy, or even simpler, Austin takes exception to Punk not taking a beer from him.

Then we FINALLY get Austin/Lesnar after that whole program.

Since Punk lost at SummerSlam and Lesnar only wrestles, apparently, 2-3 matches a year, I think WrestleMania is a next best stop while Punk feuds with Heyman in the meantime. Although, they could bring in Lesnar to pop those Rumble buys, too.

I think Lesnar/Punk II should be a submission match and that Punk should make Lesnar tap. That's the only ending that would satisfy the wait and Punk losing the first one. Lesnar hasn't tapped for anyone since returning, so that's a card they haven't played yet.

Orton/Bryan seems to be a focal point for WWE right now, so I don't know if this match is going to make it all the way to WrestleMania anymore. I'm guessing Orton will drop the title before then when either Vince or HHH betrays the other.

I really, really hope this isn't leading to HHH beating Orton for the title, though. Not because it doesn't fit in with the storyline (it actually kinda would), but because they already did that same damn thing back in 2004. Only this time, Bryan would be the "Batista" who beats HHH at WrestleMania.

I think The Rock has always been a long shot for WM30 since at least WM29. I think he was being legit in his interview when he said Rock/Cena was the only program they'd plotted out and that Brock was a "maybe" but they'd never really thought that far. That bit on RAW with the poster at WWE HQ I think was Heyman trying to push the Rock/Brock program, and that it's not necessarily first and foremost on Vince's brain.

Seems to check out with what's been playing out. Also, Rock has movies to make.

I'd LOVE it if Austin came back for a match against Punk at the biggest milestone WrestleMania in the history of thirty years, but it doesn't look like that's happening. Austin likes to milk the attention, but he never has to come back. I don't mind it after Bret's comeback in 2010. Nostalgia can be a good thing if left in the past.

Looking at past history, WWE tends to end its milestone WrestleManias with a fan favorite (usually a Canadian) finally getting his due (Bret at WM10, Benoit at WM20) and everything seems too well set up for Bryan at WM30. I wouldn't rule Punk out, though.

I do see Punk and Bryan being the last two in the 2014 Royal Rumble, in the Lex/Bret, HBK/Undertaker or Cena/Batista roles.

So, with that said, here's what I'm thinking for WrestleMania xXx: State of the Union...

Streak Match:
Cena vs The Undertaker

This is the biggest WrestleMania and the biggest match they could possibly do, and I see Cena backing away from the title scene for a bit to deal with bigger things. Like this.

WWE Title Match:
Champion Triple H vs Daniel Bryan vs Randy Orton

Even though I don't want them to do it, this fits perfectly with the rumors of HHH wrestling a conquering hero, and since HHH is involved in the title angle, he's going to be the ultimate threshold for Bryan to cross into superstardom. HHH will attempt do for Bryan what he did for Benoit 10 years earlier, although it won't be as cool because HHH already did it.

Submission Match:
CM Punk vs Brock Lesnar

This will lead to a Lesnar face turn when he ditches Heyman. Punk will take everything from Heyman, including Brock, to end the feud.

World Heavyweight Championship:
Maybe this title will be gone by WrestleMania?

Midcard matches are kinda pointless to predict at this stage, but those are the big ones.

They have to do Cena/Undertaker soon, right? It's not just that Taker's aging - it's audience turnover too. Every year, the WWE Universe gains another cohort of 9-year-olds who have no idea who the Undertaker is, and no amount of hype videos and monster face pops and announcer reverence will offset their first impressions being of some creaky Bray Wyatt imitator with a mohawk. We'll reach a point where the streak comes to mean less each year.

Taker/Lesnar doesn't excite me. (Rock/Lesnar doesn't excite me either, but at least that's a low-stakes match and thus a potential bathroom break.) Most of Lesnar's appeal lies in watching him maim underdogs. Obviously, Taker's not bumping like Cena or Punk (or Bryan or Ziggler) for 20 straight minutes. I guess they'd alternate between brawling and MMA reversals which double as restholds. Eh… maybe it would work. By now, Taker's earned the benefit of the doubt, and since he's wanted Lesnar forever you know he'd bring his A-game. Still, if the Lesnar/HHH trilogy is any indication, slow brawly matches waste Lesnar's talents, especially when the outcome is not in doubt. Undertaker trading colossal near falls with Cena, on the other hand, is something I've been waiting a decade to see…

As sappy as it sounds, I'd like to see Punk/Bryan recreate the Eddie/Benoit WMXX ending here.

WWE might as well, since they can't (or won't) show the Eddie/Benoit footage anymore. It'll give them that "two underdogs who came up through the ranks together conquering Wrestlemania" footage they need.

Here are some more thoughts from a demented mind in Central Florida:
Though I really have no desire to see John Cena hold the WWE Title ever again, I will freely admit that this match:

WWE World Title Match: John Cena (c) vs. Undertaker

at Wrestlemania would be about the only match left that has a chance of convincing me that The Streak is legitimately in jeopardy. And I'm willing to bet that both would bring their A-Game, instead of that hit-a-big-move-then-lay-on-the-mat-for-minutes-rinse-repeat abortion we got between Taker and HHH at WM XXVII.

That said, with no title on the line, I don't see The Streak having a legitimate chance of ending. And frankly, ass/u/m(e)-ing that he doesn't already win it at Survivor Series or the Royal Rumble and will be defending it at Wrestlemania, I'd much rather have WM XXX end with Daniel Bryan, WWE World Champion, victorious in the center of the ring.

I'm with you there. WM10 had Bret's big win and celebration. WM20 had Benoit and Eddie. WM30 ought to have a moment with the (presumed) new top babyface(s) of the company going into the next era of WWE.

I don't know. Eddie and Chris were best friends for ages, made it up the ranks together, and broke through the glas ceiling almostat the same time in 2004. That's why it worked.

Punk and D-Bryan aren't nearly that close. Also, Punk broke through the glass ceiling two years ago. He's already on top. WMXXX should be Bryan's big moment. Like when Stone Cold beat Shawn at WMXIV.

This is getting very abstract. It isn't as if Eddie died then and there, at WM 20, and then Benoit immediately did that thing Benoit ended up doing immediately thereafter. The idea that seeing Bryan and Punk embrace would immediately put one in mind of all that tragedy is a bit dramatic, I think. Especially given a sizable chunk of the current audience probably didn't watch then.
