As we all head off to enjoy the weekend and the start of summer, take a moment and actually remember the holiday.
It's not armed forces or Veterans' Day, it's Memorial Day. A day to remember those who gave their lives in service to protect our nation. We have days for veterans and the armed services. This is a day to honor those whose lives weren't lived because they died for us in the military, or as police, firemen, etc. When I was young it was Decoration Day as we decorated veterans' graves with flags every year at the local cemetery.
Anyway, enjoy your families and please stay safe. Our community will spend the weekend mourning the loss of a mother and son last Tuesday during the sever weather. Peace
Oddly enough, my wife and I were trying to figure out this exact question on Monday as we were in the USA for the weekend ("What's the difference between Memorial and Veterans' Day?") We figured on those who had died, but didn't realize it also included police or firemen.
From what I could tell on TV, though, Memorial Day is either a good weekend to get a decent price on a mattress or the best time to ensure you're ready for BBQ season. Unfortunately, I think (like many other days) the significance might be lost on many.
