    Sources: Three-team deal discussed

    By Chris Broussard
    ESPN The Magazine

The Denver Nuggets and the New York Knicks are discussing a three-team trade that would make forward Carmelo Anthony a Knick before the Feb. 24 trade deadline, according to league sources.

In the proposed trade, New York would send Anthony Randolph and Eddy Curry to Minnesota and the Timberwolves would send Corey Brewer and a first-round pick to Denver. Denver would also receive Wilson Chandler from New York.

A Timberwolves source told ESPN The Magazine's Ric Bucher on Sunday that the team would not approve of a deal where the team received just New York's Randolph and Curry with Brewer and a first-rounder heading to Denver. While these are the names currently being discussed, additional players could be added to make a deal possible, sources said.

The deal is not expected to happen until the middle of next week at the earliest, and one source said it could drag out until the trade deadline. Denver, which has been exchanging proposals with the Knicks for the past couple weeks, is weighing other options.

With teams aware of Anthony's desire to play in New York, the Nuggets' choices are limited. With little chance of signing Anthony long-term, few clubs are willing to send valuable assets to Denver.

Speaking solely on the Timberwolves side of this (currently hypothetical only) deal, I know they really have a boner for Randolph but I would hate to give up one of the few guys on the team who hustles on defense. If they aren't happy with the deal as it is, I'm wondering what they WOULD be happy with.

Unless the T'Wolves are crazy enough to think Randolph can become a 20 per game scorer, and they are the team that gave Darko 4 years, this trade doesn't do much for them. Also, how protected is the pick that they would be giving up? Eddy Curry would help the economy at local restaurants/grocery stores. Perhaps he'll play 2 games for them and they'll give him a 5 year contract.
Nets deal was far superior on paper for Denver.

As overrated and petulant as I think Carmelo is, at least this particular deal would mean Chauncey Billups wouldn't have to leave the Nuggets, a team he loves playing for.

Ooh! How about 'Melo to the LAKERS?

Sources: Los Angeles Lakers, Denver Nuggets have initial Carmelo Anthony talks

The Denver Nuggets have had preliminary discussions with the Los Angeles Lakers on a Carmelo Anthony trade, league sources told ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard on Tuesday.

The Lakers' package would be built around center Andrew Bynum. Denver has no interest in Ron Artest and isn't particularly interested in Lamar Odom either, sources said. A straight-up deal of Bynum for Anthony works financially, but there could be other players involved since Denver would look to shed more salary if possible.

Even 'Melo and his petulant wife would be happy with this. Los Angeles is every bit the media outlet that New York is, if not more so.

For the Lakers, this deal would work in the sense that it's insurance, just in case Kobe Bryant starts to decline. It'd also give the team a hell of a three-headed monster in Kobe, 'Melo, and Gasol. The problem here would be that the Lakers would lose their one big advantage: size. Losing Bynum would mean that teams like the Celtics and Spurs could go big on them and win easily.

It would also reduce their bench significantly, as it would force them to start Odom. And Odom coming off their bench was always the Lakers' big ace in the hole.

This will be interesting to follow.

If that's the case he's going to the wrong team in LA. If he wants to get paid and make a big impact, he should request to be traded to the LA Blakers.

I can't see that Knicks deal being true. They give up no important pieces other than Chandler AND keep Gallo and Fields? On paper having Gallo as your third scorer and Felton as your fourth could be insane.

I like Randolph and don't understand why he can't find time. I thought he'd thrive in the NY offense and he hasn't done anything except sit in the D'Antoni dog house.

Bill Simmons sent part of a podcast last week saying Bynum is a huge contract for a player with unreliable health. Sounds like a Denver trade would be comparable to the Lakers snatching Gasol from Memphis.

Take it for what it's worth, but The Lakers are denying it.

It might be true, but it's more than likely just a nice PR spin to prevent feelings from being hurt, namely Andrew Bynum's.

I'm at the point where I:

1) don't give a damn where Carmelo ends up and
2) don't care what they get for him in return.

Don't mean to discount others, but this has been a bad year to be a Nuggets fan.
