| #2 Posted on 4.12.09 1322.58 | Instant Rating: 3.16 | This looks pretty set to have Spain cruise to the final. There's no reason why they shouldn't take their group easily, and as such they'll be in the other half of the bracket from Group C and Group G first seeds - almost certainly England and Brazil (although group G looks like a nightmare - I'll take even short odds on Korea DPR to lose every game).
A and B look the most interesting - I can see anyone advancing and anyone staying home. USA looks to be sitting pretty nice in group C with Slovenia and Algeria.
Can someone please explain to me why Argentina is a seed? FIFA said they're using a combination of current ranking and World Cup history. Argentina struggled to finish fourth in CONMEBOL qualifying, and hasn't been to a World Cup semifinal in 20 years. How does this make sense? It is just FIFA not wanting a seeding group of all Euros, plus Brazil and South Africa? I can easily see them not making it out of their group. They still have the same fatal flaws they always do - a lack of any decent goalkeeper, and (most importantly) the complete and utter inability of their creative players to manage to coexist on the field together.

Part of me still thinks that Maradona will give some excuse to 'resign' between now and June, thus getting a more experienced manager for Argentina while still letting Maradona save face. Otherwise yeah, I think Argentina is going out in the group stage.

Yeah, this draw turned out pretty solid for them, I don't think that this is unreasonable:
draw England beat Algeria beat Slovenia
Which means, at worst, the 2 slot out of the group, and depending on what England does, winning the group on a tiebreaker. Round of 16 should be the least they expect, and maybe quarters or semis, depending on how the other groups pan out, though semis might be a bit of a stretch.
Looking at how things are shaking out, we've got a potential USA/Mexico match in the quarters, which would be VERY interesting.

They ditched the World Cup history bit (to make sure France weren't seeded, conspiracy fans) and just use the FIFA rankings from the end of October (i.e. before the playoffs, etc)
