Hello, friends. This week's slate runs all the way up to 306 with 32 Blu-ray and 274 DVDs coming out 7/14, also known as Tuesday. Okay...EXCEPT for five, which are noted below.

PICK OF THE WEEK

We go with nostalgia...
American Gladiators (The Original Series): The Battle Begins (The W at Amazon) (syndicated, 1989-90) Three words: "with Gladiator commentary" - three more words: "HOST MIKE ADAMLE." Episodes 13-24 - episode 13 is a recap of episodes 1-12, so you'll miss the schizophrenic period where the show tries to find itself but you'll get the entire quarter/semi/finals. No previews, but there's slightly more info over at Shout! Factory (shoutfactorystore.com) - you might ask, so I'll tell you this is NOT the season that Rico is in.

TV OF THE WEEK

The State: The Complete Series (MTV, 1994-5) Well, what can I tell you - a lot of people who were very happy to hear this was finally coming out were equally disappointed that due to rights issues, a lot of musical cues had to be replaced. I managed to miss this show the first time around, so I might be able to stomach it on DVD....but not for eighty bucks! So I guess what I'm saying it...if you're gonna get it, you best preorder it while it's under forty (or at least, it is as I type this.)

ER: The Complete Eleventh Season (NBC, 2004-5)
ER: The Complete Seasons 1-11 As you might imagine, MOST EXPENSIVE ITEM OF THE WEEK

Mad Men: Season 2 (AMC, 2008) Why yes, season 3 starts real soon now!
Mad Men: Season Two [Blu-ray]

Leverage: The First Season (TNT, 2008-9)

G.I. Joe A Real American Hero: Season 1.1 (syndicated, 1985) Episodes 1-22 - more info and previews at Shout! Factory (shoutfactorystore.com)

Bewitched: The Complete Eighth Season (ABC, 1971-2)

Peyton Place: Part Two (ABC, 1965) Episodes 32-65 (I think)

NOVA: Doctors' Diaries (WGBH, 2009) More info at NOVA (pbs.org)
America at a Crossroads: The Mosque in Morgantown (WETA, 2009) More info at America at a Crossroads (pbs.org)

Tracey Takes On... Complete Seasons 3 & 4 (HBO, 1998-9) That's the last two seasons

Shark Week: The Great Bites Collection (Discovery)
Shark Week: The Great Bites Collection [Blu-ray]
Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations - Collection Four (Travel) Mostly Season 4 episodes - list at Amazon
Crime Scene University (Investigation Discovery)

Great White Odyssey (National Geographic, 2008) Hmmm, must be Shark Week on EVERY channel
Great White Odyssey [Blu-ray]

A Haunting: Twilight of Evil [Blu-ray] AS SEEN ON DISCOVERY CHANNEL!
Guns of Will Sonnett - Complete Seasons of 1 & 2 - 49 episodes!
Tales of Wells Fargo - Starring Dale Robertson - 6 DVD SET!
Red Skelton - America's Clown Prince - 6 DVD Set - 30 Hilarious Episodes!

Faerie Tale Theatre: Tales from Hans Christian Andersen (Showtime) Four episodes
Faerie Tale Theatre: Princess Tales Four more episodes

TV MOVIES OF THE WEEK
Mary White (ABC, 1977)
Grey Gardens (HBO) (HBO, 2009) Jessica Lange, Drew Barrymore ARE "Big Edie" and "Little Edie" Bouvier Beale

JUST IN TIME
Farrah Fawcett Double Feature (Full Amar) Unfortunately they don't actually TELL us which ones they are - looks like it's "Dalva" (ABC, 1996) & "Murder On Flight 502" (ABC, 1975)

BRITISH TV OF THE WEEK
Wild Pacific [Blu-ray]
Wild Pacific (BBC, 2009?) "An Ocean of Extraordinary Discoveries"
Wire in the Blood: The Complete Sixth Season (ITV, 2008)
The Color of Magic (The Colour of Magic - Sky One, 2008)

FRENCH TV OF THE WEEK
The New World (Le Nouveau Monde - FR2, 2008) Rescheduled from June?

ISRAELI TV OF THE WEEK
Arab Labor: The Complete First Season (1994?) More info at Alive Mind (alivemindmedia.com)

And finally, here are this week's sets from Mill Creek Entertainment (millcreekent.com). They must have worked something with some other companies, because these cherry-picked sets are all from series which I believe are totally available in season sets, mostly through Shout! Factory.
Punky Brewster Eight episodes - list at Mill Creek
Men Behaving Badly Eight episodes - list at Mill Creek
McHale's Navy The FIRST eight episodes - list at Mill Creek
Ironside Episodes 1-5 - list at Mill Creek
Swamp Thing Eight episodes - list at Mill Creek

MOVIES OF THE WEEK

THE BIG ONES

The Haunting in Connecticut (Single-Disc Edition) (2009)
The Haunting in Connecticut (Unrated Special Edition) Hmm, same runtime reported as the PG-13 one...so, more swearin'? Or are the "intense sequences of terror and disturbing images" even MORE intense, terror and disturbing????
The Haunting in Connecticut [Blu-ray]

The Horsemen (Canada/USA, 2009) Dennis Quaid, Ziyi Zhang

Polanski Unauthorized (Polanski - 2009) Damian Chapa IS (also wrote/directed)

Ryan and Sean's Not So Excellent Adventure (2008) YouTube sensations I've never heard of get a movie - hey, Bobbi Billard sighting!

Beach Kings (direct to DVD, 2008) Sometimes, I have to just reprint their Amazon ad copy because it BLOWS ME AWAY: "Get set for an above-the-net kill shot of adrenaline as Beach Kings takes you inside in the hard-hitting, hard-bodied world of professional beach volleyball! David Charvet stars as Cameron Day, a former college basketball star with one last shot at greatness--the professional beach volleyball tour. Athletically gifted and hungry to learn, Cameron has his eyes on the championship--and on a sexy, elusive beauty (Torrey DeVitto). But first, Cameron must face the demons of his troubled past. Spiked with action, humor, and drama, and featuring some of volleyball.s greatest stars, Beach Kings is your ticket to center court--the hottest seat on the beach!" I gotta tell ya, that's a lot of em dashes right there. Can't-miss trailer! In fact...remind me to revisit this website at a later date, I need to show you something.

12 (Russia, 2007)

The Edge of Love (UK, 2008) Kiera Knightley, Sienna Miller, Cillian Murtphy, Matthew Rhys Trailer also available at Image (image-entertainment.com)
The Edge of Love [Blu-ray]

explicit iLLs (2008) Rosario Dawson
explicit iLLs (+ digital copy)
explicit iLLs - Blu Ray [Blu-ray] Amazingly, Blu-ray is actually cheaper than both DVD copies!

MOST USELESS DIRECT-TO-DVD SEQUEL OF THE WEEK
Van Wilder: Freshman Year (direct to DVD, 2009) What? It's actually a PREQUEL? Ohh....well that makes ALL the difference.
Van Wilder: Freshman Year - Unrated Why bother with a rated version when you're going straight to video, anyway? Ah, the mysteries of DVD releasing - Amazon review says the extras are actually better than the movie, so there's that...I guess
Van Wilder/Van Wilder: Freshman Year (Germany/USA, 2002) Somehow they decided to skip bundling it with "Van Wilder 2: The Rise of Taj"

WTF OF THE WEEK

It's funny....I caught "The State" on Comedy Central at like 3am last night and it was the first time I'd seen it- I figured it was because of that Michael & Michael show that CC is airing soon. Let's just say.....I wasn't too impressed.

Here's a great Q&A with David Wain where he talks a little about the music issues. Apparently, most of the music rights holders were unwilling to let them have the rights to their songs for any price.

It was good to find out that, although the CBS special isn't in this set, the troupe does own the rights to it, so it may see the light of day on DVD down the line.

OMG! Is that an honest-to-god Urkel sighting in this movie picture show?
Hey, you reminded me! Thanks!

Actually, it's even funnier that you should say that. Pop over to the "Beach Kings" DVD website and click on Gallery. Where does your eye naturally go?

Click to enlarge, if you really need to

I think this says a lot about both of us.

Now that you mention it, that DOES look like Urkel! I wish IMDb had ANY cast list.

Hey, wait! There's a cast list on the website!

As if you didn't have ENOUGH reason to watch this movie.

I can't believe The State is finally coming out. My VHS copy of "The State: Skits and Stickers*" is completely worn out. Porcupine Racetrack, Doug, Louie, The Jew, the Italian, and the Redhead Gay all will be playing on my DVD player on Tuesday.

Please come back and tell us how you like it! I'm really curious to hear if all the falderal about the music is true and if so, how it will actually affect your experience viewing it again after all these years.

I can't believe you actually haven't seen these yet.

I haven't seen them since highschool, which might as well be a lifetime ago, but I remember it being great. I put them on top of my queue, but I'm a little worried I might think they are so funny anymore. I really don't recall the music parts in question though. I might not even notice the difference at this point.

I enjoyed it as well mainly for Toshi. I wonder if they are going to us him more, he is a hidden gem for that show. The A plot was ok, but I felt like we have seen it before.
