Satellite boxes use that card to ``bootstrap'' themselves; i.e. to initiate a connection with the satellite they're pointed at. The boxes for digital cable are different: they've already got a wire connection to the originating server, so they can download the bootstrap program just like a diskless workstation can do so off an ethernet network using something like tftp.
I've got digital cable from the local phone company which is going away soon (they deployed it all wrong). It was delivered over ADSL. The box downloaded its firmware and package information over the wire. There's no `card' like they have for satellite, ergo no way to hack it.
My girlfriend has digital cable from the cable company (which is going to survive; go figure). Same deal except it's delivered over cable internet. There's no `card', so you've got no way to hack it.

It's illegal yes but wrong, ?????. That is based on a morality judgement. I thought ya'll were above making those types of judgements on the board.

I recall a few years ago, when cable theft was rampant, the WWF put a PSA at the beginning of their PPVs which had little kids talking about stealing and such, with the intention of shaming people into not stealing the broadcast.
The message was something along the lines of "How can you look your children in the eyes and tell them you steal cable?"
I'm guessing now the problem is more stolen satellite signals.
comcast runs ads every so often to tell people to turn in their friends and neighbors who steal cable for a chance to win fabulous prizes...

I don't blame you there Guru and that is why stealing cable is illegal. I pay a pretty penny every month for my cable and I get pissed when others are stealing and in turn result in increased rates, etc. The only thing I was trying to say is that to say its "wrong" lends an air of moral judgement to the statement.
I think that the predominant theft is of satellite now though. I think that unauthorized cable boxes are zapped pretty quickly now. I think that has now even happened with the satellite cards too. Freinds of mine that had pirate cards have now gone back to digital cable b\c their cards got fried and the people they got them from can't make any more b\c of changes made by directv in particular.

I haven't watched illegal cable recently, but back in the day, about 7 years ago when I was a teenager, black boxes were EVERYWHERE, At times watched PPV's at my friends house.
And I think the cable company tried to pull a scam to trick the dumb fans to unknowingly turn themselves in. They put scrolling text at the bottom of the screen to call this number in the next half hour and you have a chance of winning fabulous prizes.
My idiot friend quickly went to the phone to call the number, which I questioned him if he was sure he wanted to do that. He looked at me confused until I said "You are watching this illegally, do you think it's such a smart idea to call the cable company telling them you are watching the program" He put down the phone before calling, with this shocked face started thanking me and saying I'm the smartest person he knows...lol... We went back to watching the excitment that was Yokozuna v. Undertaker (err)
I wonder if that was just a scam to trick illegal users into calling? And if it was how many people got tricked.

"Above" making morality judgments? I find it difficult to comprehend how somehow making morality judgment is less enlightening than to apply a post-modern coloring to one's activities. Absolutes exist. It is wrong to steal. If something does not belong to you, and you take it without permission, that is theft.
Digital cable is a service provided for a fee; not one person has a right to get digital cable. If you want it, you must pay for it.
Myth: Cable piracy is wrong. Fact: Cable companies are big faceless corporations, which makes it okay. Myth: It's only fair to pay for quality first-run movies. Fact: Most movies shown on cable get two stars or less and are repeated ad nauseum.
Is it really to that easy to steal Digital Cable now a days? I don't know I still have the good old fashion cable. I can't buy any PPV but its a small price to pay to get cable in 5 different room at my place.

In the DC suburb of Montgomery County, MD, the cable system is allowed to run as a monolopy. Granted, Comcast is better than the old company, TV Cable Montgomery, but when they're the only game in town, who's gonna stop them from raising prices at a whim?
also, i can't get animorphic movies through digital cable [that i know of], so me and my 32" VVega are going to stick with anamorphic widescreen dvd's with component inputs

Faceless? Scroll up a little, and you'll see that Guru is in the cable industry.
Your desire to watch TV doesn't presume your right to steal it. I mean, Sony's a big corporation, right? So can't I just go steal all the TVs and DVD players I want? They're a giant faceless corporation, after all. It's not like anyone *works* to produce this stuff.
Obviously, the answer is no. I don't have the right to steal the fruits of other people's labor.
BDC is on the money with this one.

see what quoting the simpsons without stating that it is indeed a simpsons quote does?
And if'n I don't want to pay to watch TV, then by gar, I'm gonna watch broadcast TV. That may mean I only get to watch two channels, but dangit, It'd be free.

The communist in me has very big problems with this statement. It is not ALWAYS wrong to steal. There are exceptions. Stealing, let alone stealing cable, is no where near as black or white as, say, murder. Although I do agree with your definition of theft.
What I don't understand is how someone who lives on the other side of the country who wants to steal cable in any way jeopardizes Guru's job. However, it is quite possible that I don't understand the inner workings of the cable industry...
C'mon, people. Stealing is wrong. BDC is right on the money on this. If you think stealing something is okay just because a "big" company produces it, you've got a lot of growing up to do. You are certainly not going to be allowed anywhere near any of my children. Get a real job and get your head out of your ass. The world does not revolve around this little screen your looking at while you;re typing.

I know for a fact that my company services many of the users on this board. I've seen it mentioned by name. I've also seen our IP blocks show up in posts. Stealing from one of those systems affects the bottom line of our company (assuming you would have paid otherwise, and you would have in some form if you wanted to see the show).
Our company has stock. I have a 401k plan with company stock, and I have an employee Stock purchase plan that I participate in.
If you steal cable in the United States, there is about a 1/10 chance that you are stealing from the company I work for. I can't see any reason why I should stand for informing people on how to hurt my company, even if 90% of the time it hurts a rival in the industry.
Anyway, rant mode off. There are plenty of places on the web that are out of my control that will help you be dishonest. Just use a search engine and leave this board out of it.
