Hello.
Back into "oof" land as we take a look at a full 360 this week - that amounts to 328 DVDs and a sizable 32 Blu-Rays. As usual, IMDB or tv.com icons mean more info can be found a click away!
If you find something appealing at an affordable price, there should be no stopping you from clicking THERE as well!
Enough dilly-dallying around, we've got a show to do...
PICK OF THE WEEK Two Fat Ladies (The W at Amazon) (BBC, 1996-8) Only the GREATEST SHOW EVER - Jennifer Paterson, Clarissa Dickson Wright
RUNNER-UP OF THE WEEK Yu-Gi-Oh! The Complete Third Season I think this means it's time for me to find a cheap used copy of Season 2 (and start watching my copy of Season 1?)
MOVIES
BIG MOVIES OF THE WEEK
Stargate - Continuum (Direct to DVD, Canada/USA, 2008) NERD ALERT - I also hate temporal paradoxes Stargate - Continuum [Blu-ray]
The Band's Visit (Bikur Ha-Tizmoret - Israel/France/USA, 2007) Trailer at Amazon
Never Back Down (2008) - www.neverbackdownthemovie.com Never Back Down (Two disc special edition) Unrated "Extended Beat Down Edition" Never Back Down [Blu-ray]
Shine a Light (USA/UK, 2008) Martin Scorses directs the latest documentary about the Rolling Stones Shine a Light [Blu-ray]
Doomsday (Unrated Widescreen Edition) (UK/USA/South Africa, 2008) - www.doomsdayiscoming.com Doomsday Unrated (Full Screen) Doomsday [Blu-ray]
Normally, the next one would be Kim's movie of the week... Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay (Widescreen Edition) (2008) Since the cover says it includes the theatrical AND unrated versions - it will be a true test of how forgiving Kim truly is, because she LOOOOOOOOVED the first one, but I hear this one suuuuuuuucks (but will that stop her from watching both versions while I find something else to do? STAY TUNED!) Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay (Unrated Two-Disc Special Edition) Not sure if there's anything more than a (coughbullshitcough) "digital copy" on Disc 2 so it may not be worth the extra ducats Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay (Full Screen Edition) Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay [Blu-ray] Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle [Blu-ray] (USA/Canada/Germany, 2004) The "Extreme Unrated Edition" finds itself on Blu-Ray to mark the occasion
WAS THIS SEQUEL REALLY NECESSARY? WarGames: The Dead Code (direct to DVD, 2008) I'll bet you were WONDERING when they'd try to remake it - naturally, it's just...just awful. War Games (25th Anniversary Edition) (1983) Matthew Broderick, Ally Sheedy - at least MGM saw an opportunity for another release of the REAL one. New anamorphic transfer and some extra documentaries AND an ad for the "sequel!"
Lost Boys: The Tribe (direct to DVD, USA/Canada, 2008) On the other hand, you have THIS sequel, which actually has The Two Coreys in the cast list, yet seems just as unnecessary a sequel. This is the "uncut" version Lost Boys: The Tribe Here's the R rated version Lost Boys: The Tribe [Blu-ray] The Lost Boys [Blu-ray] (1987)
NEWER OLDER MOVIES AND INEXPLICABLE RERELEASES
Dark City (Director's Cut) (Australia/USA, 1998) Rufus Sewell, Jennifer Connelly, William Hurt, Kiefer Sutherland - new cut! Dark City (Director's Cut) [Blu-ray]
Towards Darkness (Hacia la Oscuridad - 2007) Roberto Urbina, America Ferrera - more info and trailer at Peace Arch (peacearch.com) Hmmm...but it also came out last week....I guess that one was full screen and THIS one is widescreen? Maybe? Towards Darkness And...I have no clue what might be different about THIS version
The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (2005) Rerelease (right?) - full screen The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (Ws) widescreen The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (Std) another full screen version?
The Inglorious Bastards (Qual Meladetto Treno Blindato - Italy, 1978) Bo Svenson, Fred Williamson - someday Tarantino will remake it (ha) - "...fully restored from original vault elements for the first time ever in America!" Includes a conversation with Quentin Tarantino and Enzo Castellari - more info at Severin (severin-films.com) The Inglorious Bastards (3-Disc Explosive Edition) More bonuses and a soundtrack CD with the previously unreleased score! Severin
KIM'S MOVIE OF THE WEEK Privilege (UK, 1967) Manfred Mann's Paul Jones plays a pop star who finds himself being used by the government - a favourite of Kim's brother, which means I've actually seen this one; it's pretty good! I'll bet it'll be even better now that it's finally out on DVD! If that weren't enough bonus (real) documentary of Paul Anka is included! (Lonely Boy - Canada, 1962)
20TH CENTURY FOX BOX OF THE WEEK Tyrone Power Matinee Idol Collection (Cafe Metropole/Girls Dormitory/Johnny Apollo/Daytime Wife/Luck of the Irish/Ill Never Forget You/That Wonderful Urge/Love Is News/This Above All/Second Honeymoon) (1936-1951)
EXPENSIVE VERSIONS OF MOVIES YOU ALREADY OWN Blu-ray Sci-Fi Bundle, Vol. 2 (Stargate Continuum / Sunshine / Aliens vs. Predator) - (Amazon.com Exclusive) [Blu-ray] Beowulf [Blu-ray] (2007) "unrated director's cut" The Sum of All Fears [Blu-ray] (USA/Germany, 2002) Clear and Present Danger [Blu-ray] (1994) Patriot Games [Blu-ray] (1992) The Hunt for Red October [Blu-ray] (1990) Top Gun [Blu-ray] (1986)
The Big White [Blu-ray] (Germany/Canada/New Zealand/USA, 2005) Robin Williams, Holly Hunter, Woddy Harrelson Beer League/The Big White [Blu-ray] Above, with (2006) Mortuary [Blu-ray] (2005) Dan Byrd, Denise Crosby Salvage [Blu-ray] (2006) Salvage/Mortuary [Blu-ray] The Last Sentinel/Final Days of Planet Earth [Blu-Ray] [Blu-ray] (2007) (miniseries, 2006)
Wolves [Blu-ray] Former IMAX film Bears [Blu-ray] Also former IMAX film - More info on these two at Magic Play (magicplay-ent.com) Wolves (IMAX) Same as above, but a DVD Bears (IMAX) Ditto Stargaze HD: Universal Beauty [Blu-ray] Hubble images set to ambient music - NOW how much would you expect to pay?
SONY GENEROUSLY PROVIDES (COUGHBULLSHITCOUGH) "DIGITAL COPY" RERELEASES (This means they're enabling some lame copy-protect scheme on these DVDs which may make it impossible to play. Don't take it lying down! Don't buy 'em!) Wind Chill (+ Digital Copy) Bobby Z Bobby Z (+ Digital Copy) Hostel Part II (+ Digital Copy) The Messengers (+ Digital Copy) Rise: Blood Hunter (Unrated + Digital Copy) Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (Widescreen Unrated + Digital Copy) Labyrinth Labyrinth (+ Digital Copy) The Dark Crystal The Dark Crystal (+ Digital Copy) Blood and Chocolate (+ Digital Copy)
Even the ones that don't have it listed appear to be exactly the same "+ Digital Copy" releases...so, in other words, I have no idea why so many of these are listed twice.

| #2 Posted on 25.7.08 2310.53 | Instant Rating: 5.16 | The Dark City Director's Cut sounds kind of worrisome from the reviews on Amazon.com. The original movie is one of the most underrated movies of the last decade or so. But the reviews make it sound like some of the awesome noir feeling of the movie is being deemphasized at the expense of the more sci-fi elements. Its never good when people are referencing the Donnie Darko director's cut (and I don't think I have ever met anyone who preferred that cut of the movie).
That said, the new version at least carries over the commentary track by Roger Ebert that was on the original disc (I assume its the one from the original, since Roger is no longer able to speak due to cancer). The commentary Ebert provides is amazing, like going to film school as he deconstructs the movie, pointing out the multiple symbols found in single shots. I would say his commentary alone makes the dvd worth a purchase if you don't have the original dvd version of this movie.

| #3 Posted on 25.7.08 2347.03 | Instant Rating: 6.80 | | I could've sworn they aired more than two episodes of "Princes of Malibu"....I saw one (or both) episodes when they were on and, despite my hatred of these kinds of "reality" shows, I thought it was pretty funny (if not obviously scripted). I think I may have even posted about it on this very site....but I'm too lazy to go back and check. | odessasteps

I didn't care for the first arc in this season, but it does fill in some of Seto and Mokuba Kaiba's history. The second arc puts the story back on track, but I won't spoil anything for you. I will only say that the first season remains my favorite and at more than one point I found myself *enduring* episodes so that I could say I had seen the whole thing, but the end was worth it.

This is an excellent movie that I used to watch late nights on either USA or TNT, but it was called "Twin Warriors" at the time. It alternates between funny and dramatic. I can't tell if this is remastered or just another release, but if you don't have it and you enjoy either Jet Li or the wire-based fighting seen in "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", this is probably a good fit for you.
This series had a well-planned, well-executed story. The magic ("bending") was very imaginative and unlike a lot of magic it stayed within its rules even when they surprised me with what it could do. You don't often see animation of this quality from an American studio.

Such a great show. Cancelled before its time.
Great to see it hit DVD. It aired way before its time, though. Had it debuted in this decade, there's a chance it either could have been posthumously saved or it could have found a different home on cable.
I didn't even realize Tiny Toon Adventures hadn't hit DVD yet. Awesome news! Between this, Freakazoid, Animaniacs, and Pinky and the Brain, that just leaves...TAZ-MANIA~!

After Freakazoid, Spielberg's production company teamed up with Warner Bros. to create Histeria!, an infotainment cartoon. I never got into it, but the wikipedia article says it had its fans. At the same time they ran the one season of the abominable Pinky, Elmyra & the Brain. So that's it for the good cartoons, at least. | CRZ
