TONIGHT: John Cena returns, just in time to hype his match with JBL coming up this Sunday at Judgment Day. And that’s all WWE.com is willing to say on tonight’s show.

-WWE Open.

-Highlights from last Monday night’s main event aired.

-In the ring standing was William Regal, next to Lillian Garcia, who sang “God Save The Queen.” Crowd reaction was....about what you’d expect. Regal chided the fans for disrespecting his country. Lots of heat for this. He said he’d set an example by throwing someone out. Let me guess...JR? Regal walked around ringside and found and guy and a girl to throw out of the building. He ordered security to send them packing. All of a sudden, Mickie James came to ringside and argued with Regal. Apparently, it’s her brother and his girlfriend that Regal threw out. He had no remorse for her as she followed him into the ring, begging for him to reconsider. Regal told her to get out of the ring before she gets thrown out. Regal asked if she would like to be stripped.....of the women’s title. Then, our hero, John Cena, made his return.

After helping Mickie out of the ring, Cena said he needed to talk to Regal, man-to-man. He said Regal is reacting to the crowd in the wrong way. Regal said Vince McMahon liked what he was doing, but Cena said McMahon is insane. Cena took out some e-mails from fans sent to WWE.com. He read a few of them, one which had a chant suggested in it. The fans didn’t catch on as quickly as I’ m sure WWE would’ve hoped. They then caught on after Cena read the next letter. He asked the fans if that’s how they truly feel. He said he’d give his word that he wouldn’t turn out the lights on any matches tonight. Regal then put Cena in the main event tonight against Randy Orton. Regal said any other party that gets involved in the match will be suspended. Regal asked if he’d earned some respect. Cena said all he did was make some good matches. Cena took issue with Regal performing his National Anthem at the outset, saying it was a bad choice, especially for Detroit. Cena demanded that Lillian sing some Aretha Franklin “Respect.” Well, if all else fails, go for the xenophobia and the cheap hometown pop.

-Tonight, Chris Jericho will apologize to Shawn Michaels. Also, the World Tag Team Titles are on the line as Cody Rhodes & Hardcore Holly defend against Santino & Carlito.

[Break]

-The bagpipes brought out Rowdy Roddy Piper, for his third Raw appearance in a row. He came out to sit ringside for the next match, by invitation of Santino Marella.

(1) Santino Marella & Carlito vs. Hardcore Holly & Cody Rhodes- World Tag Team Championship Match
High dropkick by Holly on Santino, and then he kicked Marella in the gut. His Alabama Slam was broken up by Carlito, who then hit a swinging neck-breaker and Marella got a near-fall. Marella jawed with Piper at ringside when in control of Holly. Carlito and Holly were both down, but both men made tags. Cross-body off the top by Cody for two. A powerslam for two followed that up. Marella stopped Cody’s momentum with a neck-breaker. He went to the second rope, but Piper distracted him at ringside and Santino talked some more with him. Cody turned him around, landed the DDT, and retained the titles.

WINNERS: Rhodes & Holly, at 3:03. Good action.

-JR and King talked about HBK’s knee injury, and they showed when it happened at Backlash. They asked fans to vote via text on WWE Mobile whether they think HBK is telling the truth about his knee injury.

[Break]

(2) Mr. Kennedy vs. Snitsky
Snitsky caught Kennedy coming of the middle rope and slammed him into the corner. Big scoop slam and pin attempt by Snitsky. Bear-hug slowed the match down even more. Kennedy pounded out of it, but was shoulder-blocked down. KK took out Snitsky’s leg and hit a running knee to the head. Short clothesline by Gene turned things back in his favor. Kennedy got out of the pump-handle slam and landed the Mic Check for the win.

Winner: Kennedy, at 3:28. Snitsky got quite a bit of offense, but maybe they’re trying to get some ring rust off KK.

-Randy Orton vs. John Cena is still to come tonight.

[Break]

-Todd Grisham was backstage with Santino. He complained about Roddy The Piper and said this isn’t the ‘80s, “and Michael J. Fox isn’t going back in time to become a werewolf.” Marella said he’s going to hurt Piper, and it’s going to hurt worse than a coconut to the head.

-Mickie James found John Cena backstage and thanked him for what he did earlier. She then asked him out for drinks with her boyfriend and his gf. Cena said he has various serious commitments, then said he was just joking and that he’d love to go out with him. Now we get Cena the loverboy. As if that won’t make the men hate him even more.

-Beth Phoenix and Melina are coming to the ring to face Mickie in some sort of match...and it is next.

[Break]

(3) Melina & Beth Phoenix vs. Maria & Mickie James
The heels have matching colored tights. Mis-communication by the heels right off the bat, as Melina knocked Beth off the apron on accident. Beth didn’t get back up on the apron and walked away from the match. Neck-breaker by Mickie, and it’s over.

Winners: Mickie & Maria, at 1:28. Are we getting a Beth vs. Melina feud now? So who does that leave Mickie with?

-Results of the WWE Mobile text poll re: HBK’s injury will be revealed after the break.

[Break]

-The results: 72% think HBK is telling the truth about the injury. Actually JR, Jericho’s instincts were WRONG, because he initially though HBK was faking. Instincts aren’t when you have two weeks to think about things.

-The aforementioned Paragon of Virtue came to the ring. Crowd started up a small “Y2J” chant, despite his heelishness lately. Jericho took us back to the Backlash footage of HBK’ knee buckling. Jericho said he didn’t buy it because he was guest ref and he saw the look in Shawn’s face and knew his history. Jericho said he didn’t give HBK the award a few weeks back to be malicious, but just for Michaels to know that he’s a great actor in faking the injury. Jericho then showed footage of last week’s tag match that changed his mind. Jericho said he saw the pain in Michaels’ face when he gave the superkick to Morrison, and he’s changed his mind. Jericho said he came out to apologize to Shawn and said if he wants to call off their match for this Sunday, he understands. Jericho even volunteered to talk to Regal about it, because he doesn’t want Michaels to go into the match with one bad leg.

That brought out the limping HBK. Michaels said Jericho doesn’t have to apologize, but Y2J said he had to. HBK said if anyone has to apologize, it’s him, because he faked an injury. Michaels then said he was not hurt. Y2J looked at Michaels intently, then started laughing. Jericho said Michaels is trying to play mind games and get a mental advantage heading into Judgment Day. HBK told everyone he’d do whatever it takes to win and he did just that. Jericho said Shawn was trying to insult his intelligence now. He stopped in mid-sentence and re-gathered his thoughts (a nice touch) and said HBK thinks he’s smarter than everyone else. In the middle of his thoughts pouring out, HBK superkicked him. Shawn then got the mic and said, “trust me when I tell ya: I’m not hurt.” He then did his old Rockers ring exit, jumping down to the mat and walked back to the ring ably, sans limp. Well-performed segment, but I don’t know if I liked the ending.

-Cena vs. Orton is still to come.

[Break]

-Jeff Hardy’s music played and the no-longer-suspended star came out. Reaction didn’t seem as big as usual, but still pretty good. Jeff said it was good to be back. He said he never wanted to go away but made a mistake and paid for it. He said he had a list of things to do upon his return, like become Intercont.....and his mic cut off. Shouldn’t he be talking WWE Title anyway? Not surprisingly, Regal came out and said no one wants to hear from Hardy. In fact, he should be punished by facing Umaga.

(4) Jeff Hardy vs. Umaga
Hardy went right after Umaga on the outside, with a baseball slide and a cross-body. Umaga took control though, and threw Hardy into the barricade. Umaga tossed Jeff into the ring and the match officially started. Crowd very into it early on. Headbutt off the second rope to Hardy. Umaga pounded away Hardy in the corner, but missed the butt splash. Whisper in the Wind (which JR called a Twist of Fate, but quickly corrected himself) hit for the win.

Winner: Hardy, at 1:27. Crowd picked right up where they left off in terms of their reaction to Jeff.

[Break]

(5) Cryme Tyme vs. Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch
Cryme Tyme against the team that they were fired for messing around with. After being whipped into the ropes, JTG took a detour and went out to hang with friends at ringside, including a guy dressed as Hogan. Murdoch in and I think there was a mis-communication between he and JTG in the corner. Shad in and with a head of steam, he hit Murdoch with a shoulder tackle and then a bodyslam. Cade took a seat as well. Nice big boot by Trevor and a tag made to Cade. JTG in, and he over-shot a sunset flip, but rolled Murdoch up anyway. Well, not quite, as Murdoch sat down, hooked the legs, and got the pin.

Winners: Cade & Murdoch, at 2:29.

Cade got a mic from ringside and said they’re back on a roll. Cade said maybe Murdoch’s singing has something to do with it, then asked the fans if they wanted to hear him sing. Cade didn’t care what the fans said, but asked Murdoch to sing their victory song anyway. He sang The Gambler Kenny Rogers, “Know When To Hold’em.” Out of nowhere, Cade nailed Murdoch and sent him crashing to the mat. He then punched Trevor straight in the face again. Doesn’t really make sense that they’d break up after a win. I’ve said it before, but: Why break up arguably your best team when you want to re-focus on the tag division? Ah, when Cade’s push fails, they’ll team up again I’m sure.

[Break]

-Melina was talking with Jillian when Beth came upon them. Melina asked what the deal was with her leaving. Beth said Melina thinks she can beat Mickie easier than Beth can, and she let Melina off easy tonight. Melina attacked her, but Beth got the better fo the exchange before referees and an agent (I spy: Mike Rotunda) broke it up.

-JR & Lawler talked about the Judgment Day card.

-Todd Grisham stood backstage with Randy Orton. Orton said he’s more of a Cerebral Assassin than Triple H. He said Trips had a lucky night at the last PPV, but Orton had an eight month reign. Orton said Cena, tonight, will learn that Orton is the most athletically gifted performer, and smartest, in WWE.

[Break]

(6) Randy Orton vs. John Cena
Orton has completely new theme music. I was tiring of his old one, and this one actually isn’t bad. Loud “Cena” chants. Orton held a long head-lock, but Cena worked out of it. Cena hit a few of his pet moves and got a near-fall in there. Orton put him down with a back elbow though. Cena fought back, but fell victim to Orton’s back-breaker. About three minutes in, we finally got the dueling chants. Cena, on his back, blocked an Orton boot WITH HIS BARE HANDS. He then kept hold of the foot while flipping Orton over the top rope. Commercial break.

[Break]

Crowd very hot after break. Powerslam by Orton for two. Orton started stalking the former champ, but Cena brushed him off. Facebuster and leg-drop off the top by Cena. Orton then ducked out of the ring. William Regal and JBL appeared on the ramp. JBL, in ref stripes, said Mr. Regal has determined that the ref in the ring is not fit for this match, so he appointed JBL referee. As soon as JBL got in the ring, Cena pounded away at him. He also fought off Orton, who re-appeared. He had Orton up for the FU, but JBL booted Cena right in the face, then counted a quick pin when Orton got on top.

Winner: Orton, at 9:31.

Cena attacked Orton, but the tide was quickly turned by the 2-on-1. Triple H came out to even up the odds. It came down to Orton and Trips in the ring, with Orton on the advantage. All of a sudden, a steel cage lowered and surrounded the ring. Triple H climbed to the top of the cage after Orton was sent to the outside before the cage got completely down. Show was out early, at 11:01 EST.

Regal rocks. God Save The Queen was great. Please though don't try the UnAmericans again because that just plain sucked. Cena was pretty good. Not sure about a Cena and Mickie on screen relationship but hey it gives the women something to do that is hopefully not offensive.
I don't think much of a Piper vs. Marrella feud. If they want Piper around (which could be good) a non wrestling role seems a lot better. Maybe he could give Cody and Holly some personality.
KK vs. Snitsky was OK. I do wish that they would quit talking about what a badass Snitsky is since he loses 75% of the time.
Womens match was OK but as geemoney said if Melina and Phoenix feud what does Mickie do? I guess fake date Cena. Boy thost Divas sure are important aren't they?
The HBK and Jericho interview was good. Not sure this is the way to go but so far the post WM HBK has been going well.
I seriously question splitting up Cade and Murdoch. They are a good tag team and what will Cade do after his Heat fued with Murdoch? The IC belt is being hogged by the Jerichos and Hardys. Wrestlers who are basicly above IC level.
Well, Orton has new music. Hey, Day, Way, Stay, whatever was pretty dumb so I am glad that's gone. The Main Event was good and I actually thought that HHH was going to jump (and then miss 11 months of action) at the end.
Basicly a good Raw and a very good sell for the next PPV.

I'm surprized...Murdoch has quite a decent singing voice.

Please, no more romance angles...let's stop the Mickie James/John Cena angle right where it is.

I don't care for Orton's new music. I liked his BURN IN MY LIGHT song, personally.

All in all, a decent RAW.

See, this is where the short term commitment of the WWE angles hurt them more than they realize. Remember when Murdoch had a crush on Mickie a couple of months ago that went nowhere? Instead of having him saddled with a low-card, albeit entertaining gimmick (he really is a good singer) and Mickie probably having a throwaway segment with Cena that probably will be forgotten in two weeks, the writers should had continue the original angle between the two. That would had been a far more understandable way to explain the break-up between Cade and Murdoch, while making Murdoch a bigger babyface for choosing the nice girl over the jealous partner and giving Mickie more camera time like the WWE seems to want to give her. But it seems to be asking a lot for the writers to keep certain storylines not involving main eventers going for more than a episode or two.

Otherwise, I'm not sure what to make of RAW. It was ok, but I was really confused by the Jericho/HBK segment. Am I supposed to root for Jericho for acting like a jackass the last couple of weeks or am I for HBK for 'outsmarting' Jericho despite such crappy acting on the 'bad leg'? Oh, BTW, how bad was JR for not being able to figure out which leg was injured? He changed his mind a good 3 times at least in a span of 10 seconds; way to sell the drama, Jimbo.

Also confusing was the Jeff Hardy/ Umanga match. I thought Hardy was supposed to be punished and Umanga was supposed to be getting the huge push to go into Smackdown with. At least it make me believe that Vince isn't ready to give up on Jeff just yet like we were all led to believe.

Highlight of the program was Cena referencing Regal as being 'WCW Thunder bad,' and the crowd laughing. I love that seven years later, that's still the benchmark for crappy wrestling shows.

Wasn't the Murdoch/Mickie storyline dropped because Mickie had some heat with management?

“How is it that I am a good actor? What I do is I... pretend to be the person I’m portraying. You’re confused. Case in point: in Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson comes to me and says ‘I would like you to be Gandalf the Wizard,’ and I said ‘You are aware that I am not really a wizard?’ and Peter Jackson said ‘I would like you to use your acting skills to portray a wizard for the duration of the show.’ So I said ‘Okay’ and then I said to myself ‘Mmm.. How do I do that?’ And this is what I did: I imagined that I was a wizard, and then I pretended, and acted, in that way on the stage. How did I know what to say? The words were written down for me in a script. How did I know where to stand? People told me where to stand." -- Sir Ian McKellen, Extras

I skipped this Raw, but Jeff Hardy really beat Umaga in 1:27? Umaga? It seems strange that they would let Umaga drift this long with no direction, but 1:27 geez. Can't Smackdown use a big angry heel?

Umaga losing to transition moves makes me a sad panda. :(

Supposedly, Umaga *is* moving to Smackdown. I guess they're just having him job out before "leaving the territory".

I seriously question splitting up Cade and Murdoch. They are a good tag team and what will Cade do after his Heat fued with Murdoch?

Apparently, the company is higher on Cade than Murdoch (read: Cade is bulkier and more tan), so they're planning on pushing Cade as an upper midcard heel, while Murdoch gets the lowcard singing/comedy face spot. I'm a bit disappointed we never got a lengthy Londrick vs. Cade/Murdoch feud.

Thank goodness for DVR. I was able to FF'd through Carlito/Santino vs. Holly/Rhodes, kept on chugging by Kennedy/Snitsky, and finished up by skipping over Santino's backstage interview. Yay, me!

LOL @ HBK's "this was the only time I ever faked an injury" line.

What a difference it makes adding Cena and subtracting (for the most part) HHH. Raw was so-so, but Cena added some brightness to the show that HHH's grunting he-man schtick just can't provide. Cena was pretty good in the opening segment, the Cena/Mickie backstage segment was cute, and Orton/Cena were kicking ass in the ME (these 2 have great chemistry, btw) before the convoluted ending. And holy shit does Orton's new theme suck ass.

Other than Cena's return, the best part of Raw was Beth Phoenix DESTROYING Melina backstage.

Let Cade go solo and team Murdoch with Jimmy Wang Yang. It's hard to say how good either of Cade/Murdoch are lately as their matches have been so short and ended with roll-ups.

That was interesting twist with HBK, as I really don't know who (if anyone) is going to turn heel. Don't forget Batista's promise to injure Shawn legit if he found out he was faking. I can't see that being a heel turn, as Shawn would kind of deserve it.

I thought for sure Jeff would get stiffed and pinned by Umaga too. Considering recent trends, look for Jeff to wrestle JBL next week, assuming he hasn't already in the showers.

I was so excited when they teamed up Santino and Carlito, but are they ever going to win the freaking titles?!?! This has gone one too long.

Quick comments:

I thought Regal was going to actually wrestle more. Still, he's doing a good playing GM right now. Lillian did a good job singing "God save the queen" but a subpar job on RESPECT. We don't need another boyfriend/girlfriend angle with Cena & James.

Tag team match - shame how far down the tag team division has went, they need another good tag team (reunite the Hardy's???) to compete with Carlito and Santino.

If Snitsky were around right before the introduction of Kane, wouldn't he of made a better Kane then Glen Jacobs/Dr Issac Yankem?? Speaking of Kane and Snitsky, wouldn't they also make a good tag team combo????

HBK Jericho segment was great. But how many times is Jericho going to get knocked out on Raw??

It's official with Umaga... he's a jobber right now. They just have no ideas of what to do with him.... If he goes to Smackdown, who will become the designated ass kicker of Raw?

Cade has no shot of going over as a single's wrestler.

JBL shows that having a big mouth is more important than wrestling skills. Ditto with Kennedy.

They need to shift some talent from Raw to Smackdown. Orton I would suggest.

Highlight of the show for me was Beth just beating the shit out of Melina. It was beautiful in it's brutality and you don't get to see that much ass kicking against an actual wrestler these days.

You know, I want to like Cena, then he goes and hits on my woman...

Not sure what to make of HBK faking his injury. Although it would be fun if that was the catalyst for a Batista heel turn. Just have him destroy HBK and decide he likes killing people and continues doing so until he gets to face Cena or HHH at SummerSlam. Sounds fun to me.

Can't really think of much else noteworthy about the show.

It's going to take a minute to adjust to Randy's new music.

Super Shane, I don't know what you see in Snitsky, but no way he makes a better Kane than Glen. Even if you compare relatively new Snitsky to "been doing this for the last ten years and I'm sorta broken down" Kane, I don't see where Snitsky could possibly be as good.

And if we compare him to what Kane was at the beginning, no fuckin' contest. I just rewatched WM 14 and his match with UT was maybe not the greatest thing since sliced bread, but Kane was damn near Cruiser like with his speed and he even hit his diving clothesline after jumping to the second rope instead of just climbing.

Cena can't be beat because he's some unholy genetic recombinate of superstars past. I mean, you might as well call him John "Realest of the Real, Sargent Rock - Cold - A - Mania" Cena.

I am only interested in a Cena and James romance angle if it means the return of Crazy Psycho Bitch Mickie.

I agree about having a big mouth being more important, but at least KK is in shape. I would also rather watch him wrestle over JBL anyway, but that's not saying much.
