On Tuesday, Best Buy allegedly released a memo to its stores claiming that the 80GB PlayStation 3 model was moving to closeout status and wouldn't be restocked after it was removed from the shelving plan on January 28. The memo noted that with the discontinued 60GB model gone from store shelves, only the 40GB model would be sold at Best Buy. "This means that there currently isn't a version that is PS2-compatible," the memo points out, before ending with the news that Sony has not yet made any announcements about new products.
Apparently, the memo was leaked and Sony won't confirm or deny the discontinuation of the 80GB PS3. If this is true, this is a bummer, as backward compatibility was a selling point for me, as it's looking more and more like Blu-Ray is winning the high-def DVD war.
And with GTA IV coming out April 29th, I was looking forward to a very sloth-like existence.
Hopefully Sony will release something that has some kind of backward compatibility. Although, if the price of the PS2 drops further, it might be just as cost effective to pick up a new PS2, but that's more hardware than I really want in my living room.
Just when I was finally leaning towards getting a PS3 (I only have a Wii), Sony kills one of the main selling points of getting one. I never owned a PS2, and I usually like to go back and play cheap games from the previous generation. I hope they come up with something backwards compatible.
I think this is a really poor idea on their part. I always felt that the PS2 had market dominance because of their PS1 library, building off their first system's success. Plus, when the 360 came out with limited backwards compatibility, it caught hell until they patched it up. And on a personal note, I've already played the game where I try to figure out how to hook up 4 non-compatible Nintendo systems at the same time, and I don't feel like going through that again.

I broke down and bought the 80 GB PS3 last night. I am right now in the middle of a game of PS2 NCAA Football 08 - a continuation of my Campus Legend that I imported with a $14.99 memory card adapter.
Based on the literature that came with the system, you would be led to believe that it is entirely backward-compatible out of the box. I'll have to see if any of my games have any problems, but so far, so good.
Holy fuck shit motherfucker shit. Read comics. Fuck shit shit fuck shit I sold out when I did my job. Fuck fuck fuck shit fuck. Sorry had to do it....

When they first switched to the software backward compatibility, a lot of games had huge problems. From what I understand it's gotten better, but I have to wonder if they'll spend any time at all in the future fixing existing bugs or trying to make more games work with it. It would seem they could care less, what with this news.
I kinda understood when Microsoft stopped caring about BC updates cause there really weren't THAT many great 360 games anyway, but for Sony to do so especially knowing the PS2 is still outselling the PS3?
