| #1 Posted on 28.12.07 1057.10 | Instant Rating: 9.00 | (Click on the "DVD" thread icon to find threads going all the way back to the beginning of 2007...here are links to the new DVD lists for the previous four weeks: 12/4 - 12/11 - 12/18 - 12/25)
Hello.
This week we have a monumental, mind boggling, staggering total of SEVENTY-EIGHT listings. That won't even get you through one of your longer bathroom breaks, I know, but what can I do? I'M not the guy telling the distributors "Hey, let's put off hundreds of releases for AFTER New Year's Day."
It's five Blu-Ray, ZERO HD DVD, a UMD and that leaves (doing math in head) let's see...*72* DVDs. Is that right? Doesn't matter. Let's go!
For those of you who HAVEN'T been here before, these lists work like so:
We got the big list on one page! We get them from Amazon, and they'll take you TO Amazon. Hovering over links should provide you with Amazon's current price.
CLICKING on links takes you to the Amazon shopping cart with a friendly referral from The W - consider making your purchase - ANY purchase - through us, as it'll place a few coins in our tip jar!
Because Amazon sometimes can't come correct with the information about certain movies or TV shows, you will see some exposition from me (or, more likely, a bad joke) in addition to the listing along with IMDb icons (which can be clicked to take you to a movie's IMDb listing) or tv.com icons (which can be clicked to take you to the relevant episode list from tv.com)!
All links will open new windows, so you can click, look, and then close to come right back here!
If you don't mind my asking for some promotion, please tell a friend (or vote this thread up Digg/Propeller/Newsvine/Reddit/&c. with a click of the icon(s) of your choice at the bottom of this post) about this post because it takes me a long time and I'm a big fan of more eyeballs! We're also happy for you to email this link to others as well - a lot of people do that!
Please feel free to add a reply and share your two cents about any of the listings you see here - show off your impressive knowledge, share your opinion about something you've seen, something you're looking forward to seeing, or make your own crappy jokes which are better than mine!
We also hope that if you buy something, you come back and tell us what you thought about it! This hardly ever happens, but it's always appreciated when it does!
If you have something to say but don't want to say it publicly (or register for the board), you can also email me direct at CRZ.DVD@gmail.com!
We'll take a cup of kindness yet...
PICK OF THE WEEK I don't have one. Let's pick one at random.... Extreme Movie (The W at Amazon) (direct to DVD, 2008) "A sketch comedy movie about the joys and embarrassments of teen sex. But mostly the embarrassments." Michael Cera strikes again, Frankie Muniz, Ryan Pinkston, Rob Pinkston, Christina DeRosa and Jamie Kennedy. And a hundred other people. Writers include... a lot of SNL teams for some reason. Also, Will Arnett under a pseudonym (which isn't an encouraging sign - as if "direct to DVD" WAS an encouraging sign) Thank you, Weinsteins!
MOVIES OF THE WEEK
War (Widescreen Edition) (2007) Jet Li vs. Jason Statham War War [Blu-ray]
Shoot 'Em Up (2007) Clive Owen, Paul Giamatti, Monica Bellucci - not to be confused with "War" (which I just did) Shoot Em Up [Blu-ray]
Resident Evil - Extinction (Widescreen Special Edition) (France/Australia/Germany/UK/USA, 2007) Resident Evil: Extinction This is a UMD! Can you believe they're still releasing them? Sony sure can be stubborn! Resident Evil: Extinction [Blu-ray] Resident Evil [Blu-ray] (UK/France/Germany/USA, 2002) Poor Milla Jovovich - she keeps losing all her clothes! Resident Evil: Extinction 3-Pack [Blu-ray] We're only missing a listing for "Resident Evil: Apocalypse" (Germany/France/UK/Canada, 2004) so there you go
September Dawn (Canada, 2006) Jon Voight - Terence Stamp sighting of the week
Jimmy and Judy (2006) Edward Furlong, Rachel Bella - see if you can guess which is Jimmy and which is Judy
Billy Jack (1971) Written, directed by and starring Tom Laughlin - using three different names! I like the IMDb's plot synopsis: "Ex-Green Beret hapkido expert saves wild horses from being slaughtered for dog food and helps protect a desert 'freedom school' for runaway."
TOTALLY GAY DVDs OF THE WEEK: Constantine Giannaris, the short films Caught Looking (UK, 1991) , North of Vortex (UK, 1991) and A Place in the Sun (UK, 1994, not in IMDb) "Three short films from Greece's Greatest Gay Filmmaker" - how big a pool do you think they'd need to winnow down to make that claim? Also, all the films are from the UK, not Greece, although I'm sure Giannaris is actually from Greece. This, by the way, is the GAYEST COVER OF THE WEEK. I've said enough about this release - NEXT Madagascar Skin (UK, 1995) Go West (Bosnia-Herzegovina, 2005) More info on all three of these totally gay releases at http://www.waterbearerfilms.com/whatsnew.html
Solstice (direct to DVD, 2008) One more snuck in from the Weinsteins this week - unlike the Pick of the Week, I recognise NONE of the names on this one, so...no funny joke from me, I guess. Sorry!
Foul Shot (Faded Dreams - 2007) aka "Faded Hoop Dreams"
TV OF THE WEEK
The Tudors - The Complete First Season (Showtime, 2007) Totally historically accurate retelling of the early part of King Henry VIII's life - sorta Weird Science - The Complete Seasons 1 & 2 (USA Network, 1994) Reminding us that Vanessa Angel looked really nice in tight clothing - wow, I totally forgot and/or never knew that Lee Tergesen played older brother Chett - 26 episodes seaQuest DSV: Season Two (NBC, 1994-5) Roy Scheider's last season on a show which I can only associate with two things: 1) "DARWIN---HELP..." 2) Jonathan Brandis hung himself (hanged himself?) and The W was THERE (The W)
Words and Music by Jerry Herman (NJN, 2008) Will premiere on PBS the day it's released on DVD - preview at PBS (pbs.org) Indie Sex (IFC, 2007) For those who want their smut covered in a veneer of education - three parts: Censored, Teens and Extremes - SOLD. (Not much) more info at IFC (store.ifc.com)
AUSTRALIAN TV OF THE WEEK Snowy River 3 Pack (Nine, 1998) Previously released separately, each DVD has three episodes - so we cover episodes 54-62 here (which is about 3/4 of Season 4)
KOREAN TV OF THE WEEK: Coffee Prince (커피프린스 1호점 - MBC, 2007) More info at MBC (imbc.com) (in Korean)
AND FINALLY, "60 MINUTES" OF THE WEEK: 60 Minutes - Don't Ask; Don't Tell (December 16; 2007) During wartime, do they let it slide? Video and transcript at 60 Minutes (cbsnews.com) 60 Minutes - Garden of Eden (December 16; 2007) In deepest Indonesia there's a space where humans have barely set foot - 60 Minutes

KIDZ OF THE WEEK Horseland: The Fast and the Fearless Another creepy cartoon your kids will love - 2 episodes Kibbles Rockin' Clubhouse vol. 1 Expressing Yourself For children with autism. No, REALLY. Master It!: Math Master It!: Science
MUSIC OF THE WEEK Okonokos, The Concert My Morning Jacket - maybe a rerelease? Preview of this one (or something like it) here (mymorningjacket.com) Live At The Point David Gray - see, THIS came out in 2001 for sure. Here is its listing! I think it must be a different distributor or something.

Definitely something to keep in the back of your mind the next time you have to buy a present for the man who has everything (hopefully including an expensive HDTV and lots of DVDs of some fashion). More info at Image (image-entertainment.com) and also www.avia2.com (a very pretty site)
I hope you're about as underwhelmed as I am, but not SO underwhelmed you can't find it in your heart to post a reply! Come back Monday for the top 24 (aka "the top one third") and see if anything else snuck in after the deadline!

| #6 Posted on 30.12.07 0548.37 | Instant Rating: 8.00 | Shoot 'Em Up (The W at Amazon) was a lot of fun. It was what Smokin' Aces wanted to be. The gunfights are exciting and hilarious. It stumbles badly when it starts in with the expostion, but luckily (unlike Aces) it doesn't linger too long.
I though Chris Jericho was in it, but he doesn't seem to be -- maybe his scenes got cut? Christian Cage is in it, but he has no lines and you don't even get a good look at him -- he's basically an extra. You won't notice him unless you're looking for him -- Spoiler Below: Highlight text to read
| he's standing right behind the senator when we first meet him. |
Anyway. If you like over-the-top shootouts check it out.
