Just as Edge comes back, SmackDown! loses another guy, as Matt Hardy had an emergency appendectomy before the SD! tapings.

Matt Hardy has an emergency appendectomy tonight while in Tampa where he was scheduled to appear for the television tapings. He's expected out one to three months. Hardy didn't appear on television, indicating the health issue surfaced before tapings began.

This is a major bummer. He and MVP single-handedly carried the show on their backs and just as the time finally comes for the highly-anticipated blowoff, Matt goes on the shelf.

I guess this sets up a Royal Rumble (Wrestlemania?) showdown.

Matt Hardy really does seem to be one of the unluckiest guys in the world. Could this be in any way linked to the pair dropping the tag belts?

At least this comes at the right time to play up MVP's attack as the cause of his absence. That way the feud can get right back on track when he returns.

Agreed. It should work out prefectly for a WrestleMania showdown for a huge blow off to one of the best, and longest angles of the year.

Ugh... emergency appendectomy. I had the exact same thing happen to me several years ago, back in '03. (And truthfully, it becoming an emergency was pretty much all my fault, 'cause I was a colossal frickin' idiot who thought that the pain in my abdomen was plain ol' food poisoning -- and of course, I was waaaay TOO MANLY to go to the emergency room because of a little tummy-ache. So I ignored the symptoms for several days. By the time the docs sliced me up, the appendix had gone gangrene.)

They do this operation by inflating your stomach full of air, and then yank the bad stuff out of your Hindenberg-like stomach through holes in your side and belly button. But the bad thing is that the surgeon moves your stomach muscles all around to scoop it all out, which can cause you pain years after the fact. Even today, if I contort my body in certain angles, I still feel sharp pains in my gut.

I know it sounds like an easy operation, but given Hardy's vocation and style, I could see him having on-going problems from it. I did.

BTW, you know how they pump your stomach full of air? Well, there's only one way that air leaves your stomach. You gotta fart it out. Which isn't all that easy after the operation... which puts you in the strange position of having to apologize to the nurses for NOT farting enough. But on the other hand, I did learn that Vicodin and ice cream are a MARVELOUS combination. Good times.

Meltzer notes in the article that Matt was scheduled to appear at the tapings before this popped up out of nowhere. The tag title drop was the plan all along, but it was supposed to lead into a big December PPV blowoff. That plan, obviously, is no longer viable and last night's tapings, I imagine, required a hasty re-writing.

Provided his rehab goes well, Matt should be able to be a surprise entry in the Royal Rumble to eliminate MVP a la Foley and Orton in 2004. I'd love to see a Wrestlemania match between the two of them. It would be the rare WM undercard bout in recent years that actually had months of build-up.

Funny how this will probably end up being the Feud of the Year (at least from WWE), and it only happened because first Porter, then Matt had these health problems which forced the creative monkeys to find ways to pace it slowly. And credit where due to them for pulling it off - along with the work of two performers who are both coming out of this elevated.

It still amazes me that the current writing team, a guy who (before this angle) had "Midcard 4 Life" tattooed on his forehead, and a guy who would probably be remembered more for jobbing in an inferno match than winning the US title, managed to take one of Vince Russo's dumbest angles (Wacky Tag Champs Who Hate Each Other) and make it work. I almost thought they were going to do a double turn when they dropped the titles, and they probably could've pulled that off as well.

To my mind, Matt having this surgery is a good thing, because for all the work they've put in, Porter and Hardy have earned a WM blowoff, and hopefully that's what they'll get. The only question is, straight wrestling match or toss in a gimmick? I could see both guys trying an ironman match, but only a 30 minute one. (Great as these guys have been, I don't see anyone handing them an hour on "the grandest stage of them all". It'd be nice, though.)

I'm Charlie Owens, good night, and good luck.
