(Click on the "DVD" thread icon to find threads going back to the beginning of the year...here are links to the new DVD lists for the previous four weeks: 10/9 - 10/16 - 10/23 - 10/30)
Hello.
This Tuesday you'll be able to make purchases of 13 new Blu-Ray, 6 or 7 new HD DVD and the rest are new DVDs. This final tally of 437 listings includes three comprehensive AND expensive complete TV series packages, an Ultimate Bond package with 42 discs (count 'em), a 1985 Chicago Bears season set, several releases designed to allow me to revisit my childhood - maybe you as well, a new double disc looking at The Who and the dream come true of a proper DVD release of Berkeley Breathed's 1991 Christmas special. READ ON!
For those of you who HAVEN'T been here before, these lists work like so:
Hovering over links should provide you with Amazon's current price.
CLICKING on those links will take you to the Amazon shopping cart with a friendly referral from The W - consider making your purchase (ANY purchase) through us and it'll place a few coins in our tip jar!
Because Amazon sometimes can't come correct with the information, you will see some exposition from me (or, more likely, a bad joke) in addition to the listing along with IMDb icons (which can be clicked to take you to a movie's IMDb listing) or tv.com icons (which can be clicked to take you to the relevant episode list from tv.com)
All links should open in new windows so you can come right back here after your research! (If you want - we're totally flexible about that!)
Please tell a friend (or vote this thread up Digg/Propeller/Newsvine/Reddit/&c. with a click of the icon(s) of your choice at the bottom of this post) about this post because it takes me a long time and I'm a big fan of more eyeballs! We're happy for you to email this link to others as well (a lot of people do that)!
Please feel free to add a reply and share your two cents about any of the listings you see here - show off your impressive knowledge, share your opinion about something you've seen, something you're looking forward to seeing, or make your own crappy jokes which are better than mine!
We also hope that if you buy something, you come back and tell us what you thought about it! This hardly ever happens, but we're wild eyed optimists....
If you have something to say but don't want to say it publicly (or register for the board), you can also email me direct at CRZ.DVD@gmail.com!
IT'S MY PREROGATIVE
PICK OF THE WEEK Sesame Street: Vol. 2 - Old School (1974-1979) (The W at Amazon) (PBS) Five discs from the period when I REALLY was paying attention to what was on TV - the Gordon I know debuted I this period - the Pinball Number Count debuted in '77 and I believe we MAY get all the clips as bonuses. Or at least, that's my fevered dream - almost 60 bonus clips accompany the five complete episodes - I've already pre-ordered this bad boy - buy Vol. 1 while you're at it (if you haven't already!)
RUNNER-UP: Opus N' Bill in a Wish for Wings That Work (made for TV, 1991) What an age we live in - here's one of those things I figured we'd NEVER see on DVD, but lo and behold, the Bloom County/Outland characters will once again grace my TV screen, and it only took another 16 years. Holy crap, it was SIXTEEN YEARS AGO? And the best part is, this is the FIRST I'd heard of this release - good thing I'm writing these things or I'd have never found out!
Help! (UK, 1965) The Beatles' film gets another restoration and a bonus second disc Help! (Deluxe Edition) includes script reproduction, lobby cards, poster and book Help No idea what's so special about this one (besides how expensive it is!) Help And here's one more! These are from "EMI Distribution" instead of "Capitol" for what it's worth
James Bond Ultimate Collector's Set 21 movies PLUS 21 bonus discs = wow, that's a lotta stuff. No WONDER it's so expensive! Although...less than $10 bucks a film...
CONVERT YOUR EXPENSIVE TELEVISION INTO EXPENSIVE AMBIENT ART Chronos (Canada/USA, 1985) "The first non-verbal, non-fiction motion picture filmed in time-lapse photography, scored with exotic instrumentation in a multi-channel Surround soundtrack." Nature's Journey "...a brand new sensory experience in a genre-bending mix of location filming, subtle computer-generated imagery, exotic musical soundscapes and artistic graphic enhancements that draws you deep into the magical heart of our planet Earth." They must pay these guys by the word Ritual Path "Ritual Path presents serene & surreal images of nature blended with computer generated imagery to create a truly unique entertainment experience." Sounds like they're ALL unique, doesn't it? Illuminated Manuscripts (Direct to video, 2002)
Election (Hak Se Wui - Hong Kong, 2005) Quentin Tarantino wants you to see it Eternal Summer (Sheng Xia Guang Nian - Taiwan, 2006) Also totally gay Time (Shi Gan - Japan/South Korea, 2006) Legend of Ogre (? - Japan, 2006) I Don't Want to Sleep Alone (Hei Yan Quan - Malaysia/China/Taiwan/France/Austria, 2006) Hula Girls (Hula Gru - Japan, 2006)

"SCIFI ESSENTIALS:" Alien Siege (SciFi, 2005) Brad Johnson, Carl Weathers Manticore (SciFi, 2005) Robert Beltran, Jeff Fahey, Chase Masterson In the Spider's Web (SciFi, 2007) Lance Henriksen - NOT a "SciFi Essential," but it might as well be!
TV FROM OTHER COUNTRIES
CANADA: The House of Venus Show - the complete first season (OUTtv, 2005) TV's hit gay sketch comedy series! Sounds gay. BUT a guest appearance by LADY MISS KIER is hyped on the cover! Welcome to My Castle! Outrageous (and fearless) interviewer Nardwuar the Human Serviette proves that not all Canadian public access is worthless - just most of it
COLLECTIONS FROM ... I NEVER HEARD OF "DIGITAL1STOP:" Western Classic 50 Movie Pack Whatever they could slap together? I dunno...but whatever it is, it's the MOST EXPENSIVE ITEM OF THE WEEK
HIP HOP ZINES OF THE WEEK MUSICZ MADE SICC MUZICC:Hood Rydas, Vol. 1 - Sactown MUSICZ PATHFINDER HOME ENT.:California Roll DJ Hideo - "A sexy, hip hop journey into the fast moving, high rolling Asian American youth market."
Dinosaurs vs. Apes Pair of collections of documentaries about two different subjects - go on, guess - includes "Dinosaur Movies" (direct to video, 1993) and "Hollywood Goes Ape!" (direct to video, 1994) - Cinema Epoch (cinemaepoch.com)
Come you Monday for the edits and Amazon's Top Preorders!
I've seen most of the matches on the CHIKARA disc already (they are from 2005 and 2006) and it's a great sampler for those who are curious about the promotion. The disc is less than $10 on Amazon.
I know you asked for Justin's opinion, but I kind of want to chime in, too.
There's no way that the game against the Devils from last year should be one of the Penguins' 10 greatest games. I know I didn't personally have as much emotional investment in that game as I did in a host of others over the course of last year.
To be fair, my (lack of) memory for detail makes it tough to give an appropriate replacement, though.
Weird that the new NHL game 7 box set doesn't actually have "game 7" in the title. I tried searching for it and didn't get any matches. Then, I came here and found the link.
I would like to know which games are in the 1985 Bears set and what the presentation is like. I distinctly remember the 1985 NFC Championship having one of the best openings ever, with Pat Summerall narrating a video package about the history of the Bears that is just amazing. Also a shame they don't list the games on the Amazon page. I'll likely get this eventually, but if I knew certain games were on it that might make me more certain to get it quickly.
It's funny, I can remember every game of that season clear as day, but I couldn't tell you who the Bears played in week 3 this season without looking it up.

Yeah, they picked 8 very appropriate games that usually find their way onto these lists. The night Lemieux returned was perhaps the high point of my life.
But the two from last year are suspect. Last season was magical, but I can't say that really cool regular season games from last year belong in the top ten Pens games ever.
It is egregious, also, to not include Pens/Devils game 6 1999 when Jaromir Jagr on one leg tied the game with one minute left and then won it in overtime.
I can't remember which, either Best Buy or Target, has the Seinfeld complete boxed set, in a special refridgerator collectors box, and it was priced at like $169 or something.
That is totally tempting.

The Weird Cinema box set is totally worth getting if you like the freaky, off beat stuff. I found it at Amoeba Records a couple weeks ago, and I couldn't believe they had it for $8.00 used!
There are some films in it that are hard to find in decent condition and these were very clean and clear and I was shocked. I've been looking for a good copy of Terror In Tiny Town that wasn't grainy or had a faded picture and here it is.
The first two discs are loaded wit movies you just can't find anywhere, like Chained For Life, starring the siamese twins from Freaks and Child Bride, which may be one of the most disturbing films I've ever seen that doesn't have any violence, sex, or cursing. From the title, I'm sure you can guess what it deals with.

The James Bond Ultimate collection is nice, but for diehard fans, you might want to wait for a release of the Briefcase that was released over in Europe earlier this year. It's a very nice keepsake.
This guy (en.wikipedia.org). His offices are in Meriden (or maybe Wallingford, who the hell knows) and he makes a shitload of money, it seems. Wouldn't go so far as to call him the bad boy of dermatology, buuuuut...

It's Best Buy (bestbuy.com). If Seinfeld weren't on 3 to 4 times a day as it is, I might want to invest in this. But since I can just turn on my TV at seemingly any random time in the evening and see it, it's not worth it.
Lloyd: When I met Mary, I got that old fashioned romantic feeling, where I'd do anything to bone her. Harry: That's a special feeling.

I'm not getting it because I already bought the other 8 or whatever seasons. I should have known they'd do this, but it's a really crappy way to treat the biggest fans (who wouldn't be able to wait for them all to come out).

I don't get how this is a crappy way to treat Seinfeld fans. OF COURSE a huge box set was going to come out! Box sets come out for everything! Should we expect the company to just give this away to people who have bought all of the previous seasons individually? That's crazy talk.

Lord of the Rings did it. In the box for Return of the King, there was a mail-in offer for the slipcase that would hold the DVDs from all 3 movies. And like I said, I know that they always do this. But I wish they wouldn't.
I don't know if it's the first UK series, but it is British and not the American version. This set has been out here for a few weeks. I bought it. There are eight episodes and I greatly enjoyed them. Gordon Ramsay is a wonderful sonofabitch.
