(Click on the "DVD" thread icon to find threads going back to the beginning of the year...here are links to the previous four weeks: 9/4 - 9/11 - 9/18 - 9/25)
Hello.
We have 438 new releases showing up for the week beginning Tuesday 10/2, but a few have shown up before. Taking those out, we STILL get 9 Blu-Ray, 7 HD DVD, and a fair number of DVDs. I believe just about everything that aired on TV last season is now out on DVD - well, except the "CSI" serieses for some reason. Maybe NEXT week. But still, what an age we live in when you can see stuff that was first run not one year ago - kinda makes videotaping stuff seem even MORE obsolete, doesn't it?
Anyway, the gory details once again follow the usual set of instructions...
For those of you who HAVEN'T been here before, these lists work like so:
Hovering over links should provide you with Amazon's current price.
CLICKING on those links will take you to the Amazon shopping cart with a friendly referral from The W - consider making your purchase (ANY purchase) through us and it'll place a few coins in our tip jar!
Because Amazon sometimes can't come correct with the information, you will see some exposition from me (or, more likely, a bad joke) in addition to the listing along with IMDb icons (which can be clicked to take you to a movie's IMDb listing) or tv.com icons (which can be clicked to take you to the relevant episode list from tv.com)
All links should open in new windows so you can come right back here after your research! (If you want - we're totally flexible about that!)
Please tell a friend (or vote this thread up Digg/Netscape (what the heck - Propeller?)/&c. with a click of the icon(s) of your choice at the bottom of this post) about this post because it takes me a long time and I'm a big fan of more eyeballs!
Please feel free to add a reply and share your two cents about any of the listings you see here - show off your impressive knowledge, share your opinion about something you've seen, something you're looking forward to seeing, or make your own crappy jokes which are better than mine!
We also hope that if you buy something, you come back and tell us what you thought about it! This hardly ever happens, but again, we can dream!
If you have something to say but don't want to say it publicly (or register for the board), you can also email me direct at CRZ.DVD@gmail.com!
LET'S GET IT ON
We begin as always with me going out on a limb and selecting a PICK OF THE WEEK Paul Lynde Halloween Special (The W at Amazon) (ABC, 1976) I find it hard to believe this is a legit release, but here it is anyway. Best known as the place where KISS made their first mark on television, yet another bizarrely assembled celebrity holiday special from the 1970s with Mr. Centre Square holding court with his usual style.
RUNNER-UP: The Films of Kenneth Anger, Vol. 2 Picking up where January's Vol. 1 left off - I'm actually surprised to see Fantoma not delaying this for years like they did with Vol. 1... Covers 1964-2002 - Fantoma
OTHER CLASSICS OF THE WEEK: Caligula (Three-Disc Imperial Edition) (Caligola - Italy/USA, 1979) Malcolm McDowell, hot hot Helen Mirren, Peter O'Toole, John Gielgud - bankrolled by Penthouse's Bob Guccione and notoriously notorious - the long-awaited uncensored, uncut version is somewhere in here - soooo smutty yet still a "serious" film (stifles a guffaw) - wangs all over the place - more info and trailer (!) at Image (image-entertainment.com) Caligula (The Unrated Edition) This one's only one disc. Hard to believe people are up in arms about Amazon carrying this...or maybe not so hard to believe Caligula (R-Rated) 54 minutes less than the previous listing - Really, what's the point?
20TH CENTURY FOX: Civic Duty (UK/USA/Canada, 2006) "The War on Terror just came home" - Peter Krause, Kari Matchett, Richard Schiff
SONY: Jindabyne (Australia, 2006) Laura Linney, Gabriel Byrne Pumpkinhead 4 - Blood Feud (direct to DVD, UK/USA, 2007) Lance Henriksen is the only guy I recognise in this cast list - sorry - may tie for most pointless sequel of the week, with...
MGM: Species IV - The Awakening (Unrated) (direct to DVD, 2007) Helena Mattsson - I'm not sure that besides the title this has ANYTHING to do with the original "Species" Species (Collector's Edition) (1995) ...except that this one comes out the same day - 2 discs, no idea what's new/bonus - Natasha Henstridge, Ben Kingsley, Michael Madsen, Forest Whitaker, Marg Helgenberger (You can totally see at least one of her boobies for a few seconds!!!!!!) Misery (Collector's Edition) (1990) Jimmy Caan, Kathy Bates
LEGEND: The Most Dangerous Game (1932) Joel McCrea, Fay Wray - filmed during the night using the "King Kong" sets ("KK" was filmed during the day) - 75th Anniversary edition features new colorized and black&white versions
KINO: A Cottage on Dartmoor / Silent Britain Silent film (Sweden/UK, 1929) paired with documentary on silent films in the UK (Channel 4, 2006) - more info at Kino (kino.com)
FURN FILMS OF THE WEEK: Hapkido (He Qi Dao - aka "Lady Kung Fu" - Hong Kong, 1972) Angela Mao, Carter Wong, Sammo Hung - rescheduled from... wow, 4/24? I GUESS that's possible Mystics In Bali (Leák - Indonesia, 1981) Cover proclaims "THE HOLY GRAIL OF ASIAN CULT CINEMA" but I believe that's something of a stretch A Drowning Man (Subtitled) (Oboreru Hito - Japan, 2000) Carnal (Mala Carne - Argentina, 2003) The Forest For the Trees (Der Wald vor Lauter Bumen - Germany, 2003) Wounded: The Bandit Queen (India, 2005) The Wailer 2 (La Llorona 2) (direct to DVD, Mexico/USA, 2007)
ECHO BRIDGE: Prom Night (Widescreen) (Canada, 1980) Jamie Lee Curtis, Leslie Nielsen Raw Nerve (1991) Glenn Ford, Sandahl Bergman, Randall "Tex" Cobb, Traci Lords, Jan-Michael Vincent - can you beat a cast listing like that with a STICK? Night Trap (1993) Robert Davi, Michael Ironside, Lesley-Anne Down
BRAIN DAMAGE FILMS: Schizophreniac/Necromaniac (Schizophreniac: The Whore Mangler - direct to video, 1997) (Necromanic: Schizophreniac 2 - direct to video, 2003) Brain Damage says "Most vile pieces of filth ever filmed" but I think that may be exaggeration - more info (and trailer?) at Brain Damage (braindamagefilms.com) School of Horror (direct to DVD, 2006, not in IMDb) More info at Brain Damage Kill Them and Eat Them (Canada, direct to video, 2003) Not to be confused with the Nuge's "Kill 'em and Grill 'em" - Brain Damage
TRINITY HOME ENTERTAINMENT: Blood Creek (direct to DVD, Canada, 2006) Adrift (CTV, Canada/New Zealand, 2003) Kate Jackson Alligator Eyes (1990) Party Line (1988) Richard Hatch, Shawn Weatherley (!), Leif Garrett (!), Richard Roundtree (!)
All In (2006) Dominique Swain, Michael Madsen, Louis Gossett Jr. - get this - it's a MOVIE about POKER Wild Seven (2006) Robert Forster, James M. Hausler, Robert Loggia, Richard Roundtree The Other Side (2006)
Decadent Evil 2 (direct to DVD, 2007) I dunno...I never saw Decadent Evil 1 The Deviants (2007) Directed by Jake Daniels, who put the trailer on his MySpace (vids.myspace.com)
AND FINALLY...TELEVISTA KNOWS WHAT YOU NEED: (Remember, most Televista releases are questionably legal and probably not from the best source material...however, most of these movies are available no other way!) Caravans (USA/Iran, 1978) Anthony Quinn, Christopher Lee The Story of Prostitutes (Hong Kong?, ?) I don't think "Cherry Chan" is her REAL name Girl Friday (made for TV, UK, 1994) Joanna Lumley spends nine days on a deserted island, and we ALL learn something The Rousters (made for TV, 1983) Chad Everett, Jim Varney, Hoyt Axton - failed pilot (I know, I can't believe it either) - FRED DRYER SIGHTING OF THE WEEK Leopard in the Snow (UK/Canada, 1978) Bad Blood (New Zealand/UK, 1981) Gonks Go Beat (UK, 1965) A strange take on "Romeo & Juliet" with music by the Graham Bond Organisation Viva Erotica (Se Qing Nan Nu - Hong Kong, 1996) Tender Loving Care (1974) Hellooooo nurse! Superbug Rides Again (Ein Kfer Geht aus Ganze - West Germany/Switzerland, 1971) Although this is the third one Televista has offered, I'm pretty sure it's the first one chronologically...so YOU figure it out The Big Job (UK, 1965) with the gang from Carry On, or so I gather Holiday on the Buses (UK, 1973) Third "Buses" movie On the Buses (UK, 1971) Based on the UK series of the same name - second film "Mutiny on the Buses" was in the 9/18 list Christian Classics Gideon, the Liberator, Vengeance is Mine and In the Face of Jeopardy Christian Classics, Vol. 2 Seven Days a Week, the Broken Mask and Live a Little - you know, for being "classics" I'VE sure never heard of 'em King Lear (1916) Who needs dialogue? It's only Shakespeare! I Passed for White (1960) I ain't touchin' it Dynamite Jim (Dinamite Jim - Italy/Spain, 1966)
TV OF THE WEEK
Star Trek: The Next Generation - Complete Series (Syndicated, 1987-94) WOW they done did it. MOST EXPENSIVE ITEM OF THE WEEK (I'm pretty sure) but just maybe....worth it if you haven't been a sucker and bought any of the other seasons/collectives? A massive 49 discs!
Secret World of Alex Mack - Season 1 (Nickelodeon, 1994-5) Frequent/semi/infrequent guest star Jessica Alba may have pushed this release forward, judging by the cover placement

Me neither and I grew up on church movie nights where we went to the church and watched a really, really bad movie that was somehow about Jesus because that was holier than going to see a real movie (Mom - can we skip movie night and go see a real movie - pleeeeeaaasssseee?). None of these ring a bell, although I do remember a movie or two about Gideon. I bet these are the same boring movies that (TBN) plays from time to time. Basically, these do not show up on IMDB
wish the Vengeance is Mine was the one with Ernie Borgnine torturing the guy in his basement. But I am thinking: no.

The press release I got passed says the DVD is coming out Tuesday, but the release party/indy show with LA Park is on 10/16.
I think the WWO DVD is a batch of the somewhat syndicated half hour episodes. I've got a few them from Janurary still on my TiVo that I haven't gotten to, they're not really worth the effort.
Maybe I'm missing something, but what's the big deal about the pot being $1,000,000 this time? The money always goes to charity, so its not like the winner has more at stake this time.
