...does NOT disappoint!

Unlike the first film, this one was open to close action. Out of it's 90 minute running time, I'd say that 85 minutes of it had something going on.

It literally opened with a bang and ended EXACTLY as it should have. Following the source material as close as 'realistically' possible. I understand that the Marvel films are trying to make these as close to 'reality' as they can as to not give them a 'cartoony' feel and I'm ok with this. This isn't to say that they go all BATMAN or SPIDERMAN on us and 'Man up' the content; actually, like the first one, this film seems perfectly content to be goofy and relish that it's based on a funny book.

Spoilers... Well, not wanting to give too much away, I'll say that we DO and we DO NOT get to see Galactus. The way it was done TOTALLY leaves it open for the viewer to make him out the way you want. In one scene, you see the classic Galactus silhouette on his way to earth and during 'the big fight scene' You can make out an entity inside the huge cloud; but it can also be said that he was just a big space cloud if you want to.

Victor Von Doom comes into his own this time around, losing the tacky metal skin and adapting body armor and a face mask that is much closer to his comic book form, but it's tweaked enough not to (again) look 'cartoony'.

Chris Evans and Michael Chikilis steal the show again, but Jessica Alba and Ian Gruffudd interact more with them making them seem much more like a team and family.

Also, this time around, we get the Fantasticar! It's PERFECT! It separates even like it should.

Overall, after all the other 'Comic Book' films that have come out, SPIDERMAN, GHOST RIDER, BLADE, BATMAN, SUPERMAN even, it's nice to see one that is happy to just BE a comic book film and not go all dark and brooding and serious. This is a film you can take the kids to and not worry about it being more for adults then for the kids.

Go see it!

Oh my.

I feel obligated to offer the complete opposite opinion. I saw Rise of the Silver Surfer for free last night and I have to categorically disagree with Cerebus, a good man who I think fell in love with a bad movie.

This is a bad movie. By any category I as a moviegoer and as a comic book fan (the former is more important than the latter as we're talking about a motion picture first and foremost) use to evaluate the quality of a movie, Rise of the Silver Surfer fails on every level. The acting is bad, the writing is bad, the editing is awful, the directing is worse. This movie is dumb. Dumb, dumb, dumb. It's bottom feeding drivel. And it's bad. (But... it's better than the first one, I'll gladly give it that.)

(For instance: the Fantasticar is in the film. Whoopie! Who cares? It splits in components like in the comics. Wowie, sir, then this is a great movie, yes indeedy! No, no, no.)

Honestly, have we come to demand so little from movies? Are we really so satisfied with 90 minute special effects sitcoms that pass themselves off as movies? If the answer is yes, then that makes me sad. Watching this movie made me very sad. Praise for it makes me even sadder. That and the expected high box office is a license to make more of these bad movies.

We all want different things from our (superhero) movies. I just want mine to be good, and I know what I think good is. Rise of the Silver Surfer doesn't quality as good in any level in my book.

But to each his own. If you liked or loved this movie, I'm glad you had a good time. I know I didn't.

If anyone is interested, has seen the movie and found it disagreeable as I did, or if anyone enjoyed it but wants to check their love for it against my disdain, I have a full review here with specific complaints (SPOILERS):

http://www.backofthehead.com/nerd/2007-06-14.riseofthesurferreview.html

P.S. Based on what reaction I've seen online, I get the feeling I'm gonna be in the minority for thinking this movie is awful. Oh well.

I'm in the Cerebus camp here. I thought the movie was very, very good.

Now, to put it into perspective, I am a huge Fantastic Four fan. I have a Thing collection (it's hard to type that without feeling like a supergeek). My favorite comic of all time is FF. The story of the Surfer and Galactus is like scripture for me.

I think the thing is that people were so turned off by the first one they are automatically carrying their hate to the second film. Yeah, McMahon still sucks as Doom, but he was leaps and bounds above what he was in the first one.

Galactus was very well done. Fishburne as the Surfer worked out nicely. Chiklis and Evans steal the show yet again.

As a comic movie I don't understand what else a person could ask for? The movie was pretty much non-stop from beginning to end.

I loved it. I think that if you love the Fantastic Four, you'll love it too. If you are more of a Batman/Sin City fan, stay away.

Add another "Thumbs Up" here.
As good as if not better than Spider-Man 3.

To John Orqiola I ask-- what were you expecting?

Just like Empire Strikes Back, Superman 2, Spider-Man 2 the sequel is more fun because we aren't bogged down by origins and introductions and getting to know everyone. We can just jump in.

I think it stays very true to the comics (at least from what I remember all those years ago).

My seven year old son got a little upset at the whole climax/end of the world scene, so it can be intense for kids.

My only problem was the BLATANT product placement in a pretty pivotal scene. It made me laugh-maybe because it was so silly.

I liked the jumping around to various locations.
I'm just not sure what they would do for a third movie.

I saw this last night...and I loved it. WHile I had a lukewarm reaction to the first one, it grew on me after a while and soon became a favorite movie to me.

What worked well for me was the interaction of the cast: with exception of Julian McMahon, everyone fit their characters perfectly.

What shocked me was the quick shot of ego and confidence from Reed when dealing with the General. Where'd that come from? Years of being pushed around finally coming to a head?

This was better than Spider-Man 3...and is probably the best movie I've seen this year.

Sorry, Doom still sucks in these movies. Alba still sucks, and Evans still sucks.

Tim Story promised they would get Doom right this time. They failed to do that again. There is nothing menacing, regal, or superior about this Doom. McMahon is a decent performer but he's just not hitting it with this version of the character. I just never got this feeling of massive and obsessed hatred for Reed Richards. It's just not there. He seems more mildly annoyed of Richards more than anything.

Evans still feels one note as the Human Torch.

What was with Alba's massive amounts of make-up caked on look? Were they trying to convince us even more that she's a real blonde? Because they didn't do that.

These movies just don't have heart to them. They are nothing more than dumb, disposable commercial entertainment. What's wrong with having summer blockbusters that are not just popular but classic movies as well?

I saw no implication at all that the Galactus in the movie was anything more than a cosmic storm.

That said, I thought Silver Surfer was played very well and looked good. Having heard Doug Jones voice Abe in the animated Hellboy flicks, I think he should've voiced the character as well. He has a very soft-spoken and eloquent sounding voice I think is perfect for the surfer.

In the end, The Incredibles is the closest thing we will ever get to a good Fantastic Four movie.

Well, I saw it again this morning cause I had a free 2 hours and DOA's first 10 minutes REALLY sucked, so I switched theaters. I'm glad to say I still stand by my first opinion of the film.

During the Surfers 'fight' with him, through the storm, I could make out what looked like a large face and body movement. It 'could' just by my fan-boy wishful thinking, by I'd like to think I saw what I thought I saw.

As for Dr. Doom; His hatred towards Reed isn't something that came out in just a few comic issues. It was built up of the years to where Doom respects Reed for his brain, but still hates him with every fiber of his being. It's gonna take more then two films to really show this. With a $57 million box office take over the weekend, I'm hoping that these can keep getting cheaper to make and we get more movies to build on that Doom/Reed relationship.

Also, in the comics, we mostly have found out why Doom hates Reed so much through thought balloons and overly long exposition; both of which are kinda hard to do in a movie.

I thought I saw Galactus' silhouette on Saturn when he was approaching Earth.

To all the people who hated that Galactus was a cloud (like me), it makes sense because each species perceives Galactus in a form resembling its own. Since no human had "seen" him, he stayed in his gas form, I guess.

Click here for a panel from Fantastic Four #262 showing that.

I enjoyed it for what it was, it certainly wasn't life changing or anything, but as a way to waste a couple hours and get out of the heat? Not too bad. Plus, since the projector broke in the first theater we went to, I got to see it free.

I've never been a fan of the Fantastic Four as a series, really, but I think the movies have been ok. Not as lofty as say, the X-Men ones or anything, but a nice breezy kind of popcorn film. Not everything has to have the gravitas that Batman Begins did. I really liked how they handled the "celebrification" of the superhero. I think they did it better than Spiderman did.

The acting was horrible, of course. Jessica Alba is just mindblowingly bad in everything I've ever seen her in and I really hate Michael Chiklis' Thing Voice. The only character who I really liked was the Torch, but only because he was the only one allowed to be in on the joke.

But a monthly comic and a series of movies are completely differently. You can't slowly build to that in a series of movies. People want to see Dr. Doom as we know him now, not watch eight Fantastic Four movies leading up to when Dr. Doom is going to be Dr. Doom. That's why Magneto and the X-Men already hate each other through one movie. That's why the symbiote and Green Goblin hate Spiderman through just one movie. Joker and Batman will probably hate each other before one movie is over. Having a series of movies and not showing the villain how he's supposed to be until the last movie is just lame and I don't believe for a second that is their intention anyway. They just did a crappy job and you're trying to pull an excuse out of something that isn't there. The reason so many comic book movies suck is because they completely fail with the villains and if there is no villain worth watching then there is no hero worth watching. I like Fantastic Four because Dr. Doom is the best villain in Marvel Comics, not because he's a glorified tin man. I like the X-Men because Magneto is one of the most powerful mutants alive, not a wrinkly old man who never shows how powerful he is. Somebody needs to start making good villains or there is no reason to watch comic book movies.

I just saw it today and thought it was pretty good. The action was non-stop and the lines were corny but funny. I brought my 8 year old son, who is autistic with me and he enjoyed it too. He wanted to see it due to the barage of exposure it has gotten on TV. Usually he can not sit through a whole movie without getting restless or distracted. But he made it through the whole movie and seemed to enjoy it.

I loved the F4 when I was a kid but was not a fanatic. I am sure the fanatics and purists will find fault in the movie, but the rest of us will enjoy it for what it is: a summer action film that those of us with kids can enjoy.

Any news on a third? I assume there will be since I am guessing Dr. Doom and the Silver Surfer survive.

The Wikipedia article on the movie says that JMS is writing a Silver Surfer screenplay.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fantastic_Four:_Rise_of_the_Silver_Surfer#Sequel.2Fspin-off

    Sequel/spin-off

The main cast originally signed three-picture deals and are available should a third F4 film be made.[22] Actor Julian McMahon has also signed for a third film.[23]

Screenwriter Don Payne has said he'd love to write a spin-off for the Silver Surfer and explore his origins, either in flashbacks or a prequel film.[4]J. Michael Straczynski, writer of the current Silver Surfer: Requiem series for Marvel, is writing the Silver Surfer screenplay.[24]

Haven't seen the movie yet, but I saw it had a 37% rating over at Rotten Tomatoes. Maybe it's not just the "Fanatics and Purists" that hate it?

It made just over $58 million, beating analysts prediction of $30 million. We will see if word of mouth helps/hurts it this weekend.

I was thumbs in the middle. I didn't know it was PG until after I saw the huge eight and under crowd at my 9:30 showing.

I was expecting more (content and length, it was less than 100 mins long, IIRC) and it just seemed, to me, that once it got the the meat of the movie, I had seen most of it in the preview/teasers.

Got around to seeing it today. It was a lot better than the first one, which I realize isn't saying much, but still.

I actually like the way Doom was done this time around. The way he masterminded the plot to use the Surfer's board for himself reeks of Comic Book Doom, which is how I like it. I didn't care much for Johnny going Super-Skrull at the end, though. And I thought Doom got the shaft at the end, going into the ocean and never being heard from again.

Can't complain about Galactus. No way we'd get a giant dude in a purple jumpsuit, and if we did, it'd just look incredibly silly on the big screen. The Silver Surfer was great and some of his effects were done very well. I'm personally hoping JMS writes a kick-ass screenplay for him, because a comic book movie based entirely in the cosmos could be really cool.

As for the main cast, I liked Ioan Gruffud a lot more this time than I did in the last movie. The club scene owned, especially when he got caught.

Definitely worth a matinee ticket.

FANTASTIC 42: In a word? FAN-better than the first one! Totally disposable, superficial, and paper thin -- comic book paper!! -- but these things will always have some value for a guy like this guy right here me who will watch a movie where someone says "Latveria" and "Baxter Building."

And it wasn't infuriating or anything. I dunno about the choice to play the team as the Fantastic Dorks, but, well, whatevs. Let me be the first to call attention to Jessica Alba being impossibly attractive. You wear that molecularly unstable spandex. The Invisible Shrew of a Wife stuff was kind of weird, I was like oh snap Reed! But we do know that Sue is Smart because she wears Glasses, large Glasses.

Galactus was the right call, and it speaks to the folly of the Uncanny X-Franchise for not doing any Sentinels. But then, they did not fight Galactus, oh no, they fought SURFER VON DOOM. Plus, come on, guys, I think we all know that Galactus is not a big, ominous cloud. Seriously. He's a very tall purple man.

After the countless number of cameos he's now done, Stan Lee must be really good at acting by this point.

Needed more jokes punning hot as high temperature/hot as sexy/hot as turned on.

The actress who played Johnny Storm's girlfriend looks like a Skrull.

Just saw it, dug adding Frankie Raye and the whole story. There were a pair of guys in front of us saying how it was lame that Galactus was defeated, but eh. Good movie anyway.

If they make part 3, it'll have more Doom, and maybe Fin Fang Foom or even Super Skrull.
