Hello.
We ended up with 324 releases this week! I have watched....practically none of them! However, I HAVE examined the listings and when the listings don't help, I've gone to other sources. There's probably a greater percentage of blurbs here than I've done yet. I really have no idea why, or what compels me, or or or or. I guess I'm hoping for YOUR FEEDBACK (or even purchases!)
As usual, chime in with your two cents if you're particularly excited by any inclusions on this list, if you would like to add your recommendation to any particular item, if you're easily offended by any item or my commentary thereof, or however your fancy is grabbed.
This week, I add tv.com links for the TV listings - usually you can glean the episodes included with a single click on the icon!
Prices may appear when you hover over an Amazon link!
Surprisingly, no Blu-Ray or HD DVD listings this week. Unless they've been segregated out to a place where they're not showing up for me...anyway, nobody has yet 'fessed up to owning a player...
Once again I lead off by making a completely arbitrary
PICK OF THE WEEK: The Electric Company's Greatest Hits & Bits (The W at Amazon) Seminal PBS reading/phonics show provides archive material for yet another compilation from SHOUT! factory - FINALLY we get the Tom Lehrer "ly" song - Kim's choice is the "tion" song ("t-i-o-n / tion, tion tion tion..." - aired as a PBS pledge drive special in 2006 (and was a premium if you pledged an ungodly sum of money - I chose to tape it instead ;-) )... This version is about 50% longer than what aired on TV
HONOURABLE MENTION: A Perfect Fake (Documentary Channel (Canada), 2004) Documentary (duh) about men who reject having sex with real women for...well, you can probably figure it out. Those wacky Canadians! Click here to learn more! (documentarychannel.ca)
This week I separated out the first page (12 items) of top sellers - in this case, top pre-orders - I'll put them on/near the top of the page. Let me know if this is interesting/useful/confusing!
ONLY OTHER "BIG" MOVIE OUT THIS WEEK: Let's Go to Prison (Rated & Unrated Versions) (2006) Will Arnett, Dax Shepard, Chi McBride, David Koechner - directed by Bob Odenkirk - Released in November and bombed with lightning speed
HEY, REMEMBER THE 80s?: In addition to "Night of the Comet" (above), a lot of - let's say "cult classics" from the 80's are out (or back) this week on DVD: Private School (1983) Phoebe Cates, Betsy Russell, Matthew Modine, Sylvia Kristel - teens and sex and comedy in a 1980s movie? Unthinkable! Death Wish Club (1983) One of the films later stitched into "Night Train for Terror" Revenge of the Nerds: Panty Raid Edition (1984) Apparently was going to be called the "We got BUSH!" edition but somebody thought better of it Revenge of the Nerds: The Atomic Wedgie Collection above, along with II: Nerds in Paradise (1987) , III: The Next Generation (FOX, 1992) AND IV: Nerds in Love (FOX, 1994) - even ACTUAL nerds don't need all four movies Solarbabies (1986) Another 1980s cult classic is out this week - Jami Gertz, Lukas Haas, Jason Patric, Adrian Pasdar and many rollerskates
OTHER NOTABLE MOVIES: John and Mary (1969) Dustin Hoffman, Mia Farrow - What happens the day after a one night stand? Cinderella Liberty (1973) James Caan, Marsha Mason and a lot of people you'd expect in a 1970s film about shore leave in Seattle turning into LOVE - music by Paul Williams The Other Side of Midnight (1977) aka "the other half of a Star Wars trivia question" - I'll just steal from the IMDb here: "Because of a phenomenal success of the book, 20th Century Fox was sure that this was going to be a huge hit at the box office. At the same time there were such low expectations surrounding Star Wars that most theaters refused to book the film. So the distributor at Fox came up with the idea of a package deal: telling theater chains that if they wanted this movie they had to book Star Wars first. This movie went on to become a box office dud while Star Wars went on to become one of the most successful films of all time." Based on the Sidney Sheldon novel Manitou (1978) Tony Curtis IMDb says: "A psychic's girlfriend finds out that a lump on her back is a growing reincarnation of a 400 year-old demonic Native American spirit." I sure couldn't come up with anything better than THAT. Dead Girls Don't Tango (1992) PROBABLY not Karen Black's greatest triumph
WWE: WWE - Mick Foley Greatest Hits & Misses - A Life in Wrestling (Hardcore Edition) A third disc is added with: MICK FOLEY vs. RANDY ORTON WWE Backlash 4/18/04 MICK FOLEY vs. EDGE WrestleMania 22 4/2/06 MICK FOLEY & EDGE vs. TERRY FUNK & TOMMY DREAMER ECW One Night Stand 6/11/06 MICK FOLEY vs. RIC FLAIR SummerSlam 8/20/06
...and "alternative" commentary by Foley & Joey Styles

DODGY RELEASES OF THE WEEK: Heroes of Telemark (1965) Kirk Douglas, Richard Harris, Ulla Jacobsson - looks like a cut-rate redub of a VHS tape onto DVD - probably avoid it unless you're dying to see it The Lighthorsemen (Import) (Australia, 1987) New "import" of questionable character (ie full screen) of a movie not yet released on DVD A Little Romance Looks more like "Always Say Goodbye" to me (1996) - Marcia Cross, Polly Draper, Phil Brock - rerelease with a different name from the same distributor?

TV OF THE WEEK: { A few releases (Moonlighting, Hawaii Five-O, Doctor Who, Stargate: Atlantis and Northern Exposure) can be found upstairs in the "top preorders" section } Sabrina, The Teenage Witch - The Complete First Season (1996-7) 24 episodes, 4 discs, 1 talking cat Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends - The Complete Season 1 (2004) From "Powerpuff Girls" creator Craig McCracken - 13? episodes of the CN series on 2 discs The Loop - Season 1 (2006) Yes, ALL SEVEN EPISODES. NOT SMUT: Water Fun - Sorry, it's about swimming exercises - hey kids, don't put the TV next to the pool, okay? Click Here (humankinetics.com)
SMUT: Bust Things in Life AHAHAHAHAHAH BUST GET IT BUST IT'S ABOUT BOOBS Y'ALL man I've heard of NONE of these actresses - either the industry passed me by or they aren't making smut like they used to Peach Girls Nothin Sweeter 3
MOSTLY MYSTERY RELEASES FROM TIMELESS MEDIA ENTERTAINMENT: War of the Worlds I have no idea which one this is, but since "Timeless Media Group" is responsible for it, I would bet on something close to public domain Dracula's Curse Again, this could be a couple different films, but no help at the Timeless website (timelessmusic.com) - you know what, let's blow through the rest of their releases When a Killer Calls (2006) King of the Lost World (2005) The gorilla on the cover is NOT Bruce Boxleitner (I think)
MYSTERY RELEASE OF THE WEEK: F Bomb - Sorry, the Velocity Home Entertainment website (velocityhomeentertainment.com) is down - these are the people who distributed "Farce of the Penguins," if that helps give you any idea
EN ESPAOL: El Marido De Mi Novia (1951) La Golfa Del Barrio (1983) COVER OF THE WEEK - now this is how you sell a pelicula, am I right hombres? Cuna De Lobos (1986-7) Another nice cover which really captures the essence of the telenovela format, at least if all the ads I've ever seen are to be believed - hmm, if they really manage to compress a 120 episode run into just under 12 hours on 3 discs, I guess there IS a lot of filler in the format Al Otro Lado (2004) Serenata en San Juan - Melina Len y Los Tri-O - companion to the CD? Mis Exitos En Video Priscilla y sus Balas de Plata
MOST OBSCURE RELEASE OF THE WEEK (aka "Huh?"): Presence in Action C. Otto Scharmer - "In this presentation, Otto Scharmer introduces the social technology of presencing to management and management science. 'Presencing,' a blend of 'presence' and 'sensing,' refers to the ability to sense and bring into the present one's highest future potential. Scharmer encourages co-creation of a future that depends on each of us." You don't say!
I may be wrong, but at some point I thought David McClane sold the GLOW library to Ursula Hayden, or Babe the Farmer's Daughter as she was known. She was selling copies of GLOW shows for a while.
I would like to think that David "HELLO, HELLO" McClane is not getting any residuals beyond maybe getting a small check as being a member of the "talent" back then.

Does the longer version have any mention of Spider-Man? that seemed to be a glaring omission on the PBS Special.
If it's the same GLOW DVD I bought at a flea market a couple of years ago that had the first five or six episodes on it (and why wouldn't it be? Who would spend any kind of money repackaging GLOW?)
There's a HORRIFIC injury during a match between a lifeguard and someone else. (I know, but it's been a few years since I saw it) In the match, the lifeguard's left elbow completely inverts during an arm-drag attempt on her opponent. It wouldn't have been so bad, but apparently they filmed these shows live to tape, and rather than drop the whole show, they stayed on the girl screaming in pain, while replaying the injury for around 10-15 minutes, until the paramedics finally got down to the ring and carted her off.
If you think WCW replaying Sid's leg breaking coming off the top rope was bad, you ain't seen nothin'.

It won a bunch of awards at Fantasia last year. I stayed away because it looked to overwhelm my freakiness quotient. The previews made it look very very very very bizarre.

DODGY RELEASES OF THE WEEK: The Lighthorsemen (Import) (Australia, 1987) New "import" of questionable character (ie full screen) of a movie not yet released on DVD
Without disagreeing on the dodginess factor this is a GREAT war movie about a group of Australian cavalry during the First World War and how their untit commander had to completely invent new tactics to keep the unit relevant. It works a little bit like a sports movie with the irascible coach forcing his men to do wacky things that all make sense later. Bittersweet ending related to their big victory which ended up being credited to Lawrence's Arabs when they actually only entered the city after the Australians had secured it. The Aussies are still pissed about it. Just ask them sometime.

You have never heard of Celeste, really? She is sort of legend (i.e. my age/OLDer) of the industry.
Link to her "bio" on the Wicked Pictures site with picture http://www.wickedpictures.com/bio/a-e/Celeste.html Do I really need to say NSFW? It's actually pretty innocuous but your IT guy might be curious why you are visiting wicked's site
her English wiki page is DUH-leted and marked for quick redeletion, but she has a French wiki site. Ooh La La! She also has an imdb listing but no picture. (Which confuses me honestly I would have thought that porn stars are all up on this Intramet thing and make sure that their listings on things like IMDB are all up to date. I mean you never know when some geek with a crush on you is going to get a TV show and you get casted in a cameo ala X-Files (Ashlyn Gere I think and maybe a couple of others.)
hmmm. Born in 1972, so she is 35, four years younger than me. Fits the MILF category though because she has a son.
All of this assumes that it is in fact the Celeste in this film as opposed to a Celeste.
I am a little confused by the SMUT on amazon. Given how much is actually released on a weekly basis, you would think that there would be tons on this list. Or does Amazon have a no-smut policy and this is just what gets through the filter? And is that why some things end up falling off the list afterwards?

Longer than an hour but less than a week. ;-) Usually work is slower so I get more done earlier (ten here, ten there) but between our snow emergencies and me being sick, it/I was strung out a little longer - otherwise it would have been up earlier on Friday (although I'm considering changing the timing of the post to a time when more people might be online to vote it up on Digg et al)

I'll tell after it arrives and I watch it. :)

I know exactly what episode you're talking about because I got THAT DVD as a gift one Christmas. I'm working from a fuzzy memory as well, but I *believe* those particular episodes are from the second go round. I'm kinda hoping the fact that it's called "early years" means it's actually earlier. My brother-in-law is the GLOW expert; we'll see if he ends up with a copy or not.
(I just went back and found MY copy - it's called "Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling Volumes 1 & 2" and looks exactly like this entry (The W at Amazon) - the user review says matches ARE from Season 1, so don't listen to me. Also, the girl who broke her arm was Susie Spirit!)

That's my educated guess - I'm always surprised when I see stuff like that showing up on Amazon. Especially with a cover! Think of the children!
{ Sorry, you must be logged in to see this text! }
All the smut that bleeds through tends to be of the softcore variety (Playboy videos, Girls Gone Wild, etc.), but anything with hard sex content is probably filtered pretty easily.
Celeste is still active in the adult industry, but not as an actress. She's a fairly prominent director, though, contracted to Digital Playground. Her stuff is very couples friendly, with all the sex sounds filtered out and covered with techno or mood music, and she has an extreme fondness for slow motion. Good cinematography, though.
These are the useless things you learn when you spend three years working in adult retail.
"Never piss off a hawk with a blowgun" - Conan O'Brien
Here's another 241 which listed between 3/6 and 3/12. MAN they put EVERYTHING out on DVD if only I look hard enough! Watch closely for the funny sex ones!
What possibly could be going on here? I mean, I've read the DVDMB long enough to know somewhere out there, there's someone who's faithfully taping every single episode of their most favorite newscast and archiving them "just in case" and I'm sure there are requests for copies of episodes where someone's mom/dad/daughter/dog/cat/llama was on for two seconds.
Maybe, if you can do it cheap enough, there's some value in putting a week's worth of commercial free episodes on a single DVD in case someone wants a copy.
But these appear to be half hour newscasts, with no description of what's actually on the show), being sold for $18.
My hunch is they've ALWAYS been available from whoever currently has rights to the CBS News Archives through some (more difficult to get at) means, but someone is now making them available via Amazon. Maybe CBS is attempting to mine a new revenue stream? I hear they need it... (or was it the Viacom half that needed help)
Thanks for the listings--I clicked over from Fark.com's classified, and read all nine or ten threads. I just bought the *cough*Dokken*cough* DVD through the link, and wanted to let you know.

I absolutely loved this movie from beginning to end. The story was kinda stale, but the way it was presented was not. All of the characters were believable and actually likeable. The pacing was probably the best I've seen in an animated movie recently.
