| #1 Posted on 9.2.07 1131.07 | Instant Rating: 9.00 | Hello.
This week - rather, the week beginning Tuesday (2/13), there are 357 DVD listings added to the available ranks of the mighty Amazon.com, only five of which are versions of "The Departed." Now, I'll tell you right off the bat that 93 of them probably aren't actual new releases, but new to Amazon. You'll see them near the bottom in small print. Go ahead and gloss over those.
Yeah, you knew "The Departed" was coming out - but did you also know the Hong Kong triology which inspired it is available? There's also a couple of incendiary documentaries, Rob Schneider's television career, too much Mozart, John Cena before he was John Cena, an import from Mongolia, real Mexican luchadors, Camel, Finesse, Michael Waltrip wearing an apron, Ron Perlman in animal makeup AND a double feature from Chesty Morgan - who is a living double feature, if you catch my drift. BOING.
ALL ABOARD
As always, I'm hoping something here will get you excited, or maybe you'll learn something's coming out that you had no idea was coming out (or was EVER coming out). Please feel free to add your own two cents and recommendations in a reply if you've seen these before and are/are not longing to see it again!
If you buy something and watch it later, we hope you'll add a review, either in a new thread or in a reply here!
Hover over titles for Amazon magic and (hopefully) a look at the cover!
Exclamation points!
We begin as always with me arbitrarily selecting a
PICK OF THE WEEK: Performance (The W at Amazon) (UK, 1970) James Fox, Mick Jagger - Notorious film originally received an "X" rating for sex and drug use (just how much was simulated and how much really happened when they filmed? You decide) and cemented the Stones' reputation - now gets an "R" but is apparently almost totally uncensored
COLLECTIONS TO CONSIDER: Mr. Moto Collection - Vol. 2 (Mr. Moto's Gamble / Mr. Moto in Danger Island / Mr. Moto Takes a Vacation / Mr. Moto's Last Warning) - amazingly, you used to be able to like these movies without being considered a racist! Peter Lorre stars in his last four films and for completists, 1965's "Return of Mr. Moto" is included as a bonus Evil Animals Triple Feature Day of the Animals (1977 - Christopher George, Leslie Nielsen), Grizzly (1976 - Christopher George), Devil Dog: The Hound of Hell (made for TV, 1978 - Richard Crenna, Kim Richards) - surprisingly good indie horror films - "Grizzly" in particular smashed indie money records at the time, and was #1 until "Halloween" in 1978
BIG MOVIE OF THE WEEK:
The Departed (Two-Disc Special Edition) The Departed (Widescreen Edition) The Departed (Blu-ray) The Departed (Combo HD DVD and Standard DVD) The Departed (Full Screen Edition)
COINCIDENTALLY: The Infernal Affairs Trilogy (Infernal Affairs / Infernal Affairs 2 / Infernal Affairs 3) (Special Collector's Edition Box Set) - the Hong Kong trilogy that inspired "The Departed" - 2 is a prequel and 3 is the sequel - got it? (SUGGESTION: Watch "1" first)
Or, waste your money and purchase them individually. The first film came out in 2004; the other two are out Tuesday: Infernal Affairs 2 (Special Collector's Edition) (Mou Gaan Dou II - Hong Kong, 2003) Infernal Affairs 3 (Special Collector's Edition) (Mou Gaan Dou III: Jung Gik Mou Gaan - Hong Kong, 2003)
MORE BIGS:
Marie Antoinette
The Quiet
School for Scoundrels (Unrated Widescreen) School for Scoundrels (Unrated Full Screen) School for Scoundrels (Rated Widescreen)
Zoom - Academy for Superheroes (aka "Zoom")
"BIGS" THAT WERE IN VERY FEW/NO THEATRES:
Half Nelson Ryan Gosling's performance received an Oscar nod for Best Actor
Infamous aka "the other Truman Capote movie" - Sigourney Weaver, Toby Jones, Gwyneth Paltrow
Man About Town - Ben Affleck, Rebecca Romijn (straight to DVD)
MORE FORMATS FOR:
The Marine (Blu-ray) The Marine (UMD Mini for PSP)
So when I was at Best Buy a couple weeks back looking at this movie (and restraining myself from buying it), I happened to notice that the runtime of the "unrated" version was a whopping ONE MINUTE LONGER than the "rated" version. Seriously, how much unrated-ness can you cram into an extra minute? Did anybody actually buy this and can shed some light? (I don't dare ask if anybody actually saw the movie AND bought the DVD - although I suppose that type of person makes up a large amount of the market for the DVD...)
RERELEASES FOR RICH PEOPLE (BLU-RAY): Broken Arrow Chain Reaction Chronos Entrapment Ladder 49 Phone Booth Planet of the Apes Reign of Fire The Sentinel The Usual Suspects
Anybody have a Blu-ray player yet? Anybody even thinking about getting one? (I'm not - seems like I should buy a HDTV first...but I suppose I could be persuaded)
CRITERION: #369: Paul Robeson: Portraits of the Artist (The Emperor Jones / Body and Soul / Borderline / Sanders of the River / Jericho / The Proud Valley / Native Land / Paul Robeson: Tribute to an Artist) - Criterion Collection 4 discs (#370-373) on the influential African-American actor - to learn more about this set, click here (criterionco.com) and then here (dvdbeaver.com). #374: Bicycle Thieves (Criterion Collection) (Ladri di Biciclette - Italy, 1948) Directed by Vittorio De Sica - also known as "The Bicycle Thief" #375: Green for Danger - Criterion Collection (UK, 1946) Directed by Sidney Gilliat
NERD ALERT: Bug Buster (1998) Randy Quaid leads a very weird collection of castmembers - sorry, I meant to say "ecletic" - http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0135165/ UnConventional (2004) Documentary of the 2003 Chiller-Con

MOVIES STARRING CHRIS JERICHO: Android Apocalypse (Widescreen Extended Version) (Canada/USA, 2006) Aired on Sci Fi last year - probably right after ECW (amongst other times) if I recall correctly
DOCUMENTARIES: The U.S. vs. John Lennon - People who lived through it might put the word documentary in quotes F**K - Documentary about particularly naughty word (SPOILER: It isn't "FARK") - loads of celebrities lend their intellectual insight - http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0486585/ ...So Goes the Nation (2006) Documentary focusing on state of Ohio in the weeks leading to the 2004 Bush/Kerry presidential election - as above, includes something to piss off everybody ;-) O'Kennedy's Ireland - JFK visits family's ancestral lands in 1963 - baby boomers get misty Sabbath in Paradise (Germany, 1998) Documentary about Jewish culture/jazz in the Lower East Side of New York Rent a Rasta (2006) Short film examines phenomena of thousands of middle-aged white women travelling to Jamaica in search of "the big bamboo" - their words, not mine - http://www.passionriver.com/titles.php?id=90
WACKY FURN FILM COLLECTIONS OF THE WEEK: The Kommissar X Collection - Central Europe's answer to James Bond - includes Kiss Kiss, Kill Kill (Kommissar X - Jagd auf Unbekannt - West Germany/Italy/Yugoslavia, 1966), So Darling, So Deadly (Kommissar X - In den Klauen des goldenen Drachen - Yugoslavia/Italy/Austria/West Germany, 1966) and Death is Nimble, Death is Quick (Kommissar X - Drei gelbe Katzen - Austria/France/Italy, 1966) - and apparently there are another three "Kommissar X" movies somewhere else in Europe Hercules and the Captive Women/Hercules, Prisoner of Evil Ercole Alla Conquista di Atlantide (Italy/France, 1961) and Ursus, il Terrore dei Kirghisi (Italy, 1964)

This one looks interesting. Is this a fictional piece or a documentary?

You decide) and cemented the Stones' reputation - now gets an "R" but is apparently almost totally uncensored
This one looks interesting. Is this a fictional piece or a documentary?
Thanks for taking the time to do these lists, by the way.
Oh, it's a real movie - it's just that, you know, late 1960s, the people involved.....

How can I order through Amazon.ca (for cheaper shipping) while still giving The W credit for the reference?
If we're not already signed up for amazon.ca, I'll make sure we are this weekend. Bug me about this next week.

El Robo de las Momias de Guanajuato also features the Blue Angel and Rayo de Jalisco.
IMDB has a sterling quote for El Triunfo de las Campenoes Justicieros
If you don't care about crazy and unrelated ideas, because there are not a plot, bad acting and lack of good effects, you might get away with it and even enjoy it.

Wouldn't go out of my way to purchase it, but, it isn't a dud. Kentucky goes over .500 in football and they release a DVD? What would have happened if they actually went to a real bowl game? Question on an HBO Movie, late 80's/early 90's: What was the name of the movie that had the U.S. get nuked by the Soviet Union, questions about who the President was, and James Earl Jones in the Looking Glass plane? I never can remember the name, and is it available on DVD?

I think you're talking about "By Dawn's Early Light" (us.imdb.com), and yup (The W at Amazon).

A guy at school had an Emergency! show lunchbox, I was so jealous.
I am surprised it went three years, though it was pretty popular. I'm more of an "Adam-12" fan though.

| #9 Posted on 9.2.07 2130.43 | Instant Rating: 6.71 | This is a great week for Crtierions. The Paul Robeson set should be awesome and Bicycle Thief(Thieves) is one of those film school movies that everyone should see (especially if you can see the "homage" movie The Icicle Thief at the same time).
I wish there were more extras on M. Antoinette.
