This is a fine question.
When I lived with my mom, we never really had the money to put together a real T-day meal, so we usually found an open restaraunt we liked and had lunch or dinner there (chinese, BBQ place, whathaveyou). One year, I splurged and bought one of those pre-cooked turkeys, that was the tastiest one I've ever had. I was working at Boston Market during Thanksgiving another year, so I brought home a bunch of their turkey & stuffing & stuff.
This is my wife & I's 3rd year together, and we're having the festivities at our house this year. She's doing all of the cooking and I'll be contributing absolutely nothing.

| #4 Posted on 21.11.06 1301.57 | Instant Rating: 5.42 | "Cocktail hour" a couple hours before the meal. No actual cocktails are consumed (no one in the family is a heavy drinker, and one of us is in AA), but plenty of cheese, crackers, pepperoni, and such is passed around.
Since my birthday is the 25th, and Mrs. Shem's is the 19th, we usually also have a birthday celebration along with the regular holiday festivities.
A viewing of "Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas" is usually inflicted on the short folk.

As a teen, the tradition was to go bowling with my cousins after consuming too much turkey. I have no idea why, but that's what makes a tradition. | shinstrife

| #7 Posted on 23.11.06 0913.34 | Instant Rating: 0.72 | For the past 21 yrs. I sit infront of the TV, watching the parade with a 2 litre bottle of Coke Classic (formerly a 3 litre bottle) and a box of Croutons.
Before you ask, it stemmed from my mother shooing me out of the Kitchen one year. She handed me a box of croutons (thought to be a box of cereal) and I grabbed the cereal on my own.
My wife thinks I'm insane and my 3 year old thinks I'm brilliant. I can't argue with him, there...or tradition.

| #8 Posted on 24.11.06 0247.47 | Instant Rating: 4.43 | My mom's cranberry salad. It's more like a cranberry ambrosia, if you want to be accurate with it, but we always eat it with the meal.
After we all eat as a family, I usually peel off and eat with friends as well (what, I am trying to save some for leftovers at home). That started about 6 years ago for me, as my friends are generally a pack of strays. One year it was with one buddy and his family that had a great grandmother, a grandmother, and his aunt doing all the cooking, one year it was with some friends in their new place breaking the house in, this year it was at another friend's, where we had much alcohol and a Wii to play with. No, I don't pick and choose, but by sheer happenstance I always get invited by a friend for Thanksgiving, so I guess that's a tradition.
Hold nothing sacred and you'll never be dissapointed. Especially not this statement.

We rent movies for them and try to keep enough activities going if they want. The kitchen staff provides all that have to work with a wonderful spread for ourselves.
Then I go home and meet the wife where she is and say hello to any family members. After a bit we head home for a nap and then a bit more to eat and a movie.
I don't have a lot of family in the area and sometimes switch working Thanksgiving for Christmas so we get at least one together.
The next day I usually start keeping an eye out for eggnog in the markets. |
