This would be the equivalent of someone like Evel Knievel dying from a motorcycle jump gone wrong. It's something you KNOW can happen, but it's not something you seriously expect. This was a shocker.
But he went down doing what he loved and, like many unfortunate others, went down to an occupational hazard. God bless Steve Irwin and thanks for the memories.
TEN YEARS AGO IN WRESTLING HISTORY: AUGUST 1996 WWF: Shawn Michaels d. Vader at Summerslam '96. It would prove to be one of Vader's last main events and he sure made a go of it. Also, Mankind and Undertaker faced off in one of the modern-day classics: The Boiler-Room Brawl!
WCW: Hulk Hogan wins the WCW title from The Giant, beginning a YEAR-LONG title reign that would be briefly interrupted by Lex Luger for six days before holding onto the title for ANOTHER four months. THIS was WCW!
I gotta say, I always thought he was invincible. And to die of such a freak occurrence as a stingray barb to the heart. The news bites all say that no one's died of a stingray attack in like 25 years. All the deadly animals he's had such close calls with, crocs and poisonous snakes and man-eating lions, and this is what gets him.
Considering a death a Sting Ray is rare it's quite unexpected. Jach Hanna from the Columbus Zoo, 3hrs from the house here, had this to say,
"It's unbelievable, really," Jack Hanna, the host of "Jack Hanna's Animal Adventure" and director emeritus of the Columbus (Ohio) Zoo, told CNN. "You think of Steve Irwin and you think 'indestructible.' " http://www.kltv.com/Global/story.asp?S=5362163
I got to listen to his phone interview about noon and it said it is so rare to die from a Sting Ray so what ever happened had to be a freak accident. They do have venom but not even enought to kill a human. What did Steve in was it went right into his heart. Sad, so sad, because the animals of this world lost a great communicatior for them. He wasn't the only one but he was one the best of them. I'll miss you Steve Irwin...CROCS RULE!
I get 310 miles, used to only get 260, on 3/4 a tank of gas. Please go ahead and try it. I've seen a major improvement in my mileage
.... .... I'm not even sure what to say.... I don't know how I'm going to tell my kids. Wow. Prayers for his wife and kids are definitely in order.
"Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe is winning." --Rick Cook
Yeah, he went down doing what he loved- and he left a big legacy behind. (Several wildlife foundations, and the Australian Zoo in its present state).
A lot of people have said, "Im not surprised". I think it is a shocker- He was a professional, and although he seemed to be prodding dangerous wildlife; he knew what he was doing and he did it to educate us, it took a freak accident like this to take the man down.
I read the wikipedia article, only around a dozen people have ever been fatally stung by a sting ray, Mr. Irwin's death being the only known recorded instance. (EDIT: Recorded on film I mean)
TEN YEARS AGO IN WRESTLING HISTORY: SEPTEMBER 1996 WWF: Shawn Michaels d. Mankind at Mind Games, one of the 90's best matches. Also, some guy named Steve Austin made it his personal mission to bring Bret Hart back to the ring.
WCW: The nWo prevailed in War Games with the help of a Fake Sting. The real Sting walked out on WCW, kicking off one of the biggest angles in the company's history.
The sad part is that the removal may have killed him. If he had kept the barb in, perhaps the blood loss may have been lessened and perhaps he could have survived to safety. Of course, its not like he could have known that the ray had hit in the exact right spot to be fatal, so he was only doing the proper and natural response. Just another thing to shake your head at and be amazed about.
I loved the guy. He seemed to truly care about the animals he was showing to us, and loved them in a way that I suspect most animal-rights activists never truly will.
I just know one thing. Whether you like him or hate him, he's the best thing going today. So I really just like the original point CRZ pointed out. "What now? ;-)" My thoughts are... For everything there is a MasterCard Government Bailout....
