|  #1 Posted on 20.5.02 0308.54 | I subscribed to Wade Keller's Pro Wrestling Torch for 3 years, but let my subscription lapse in August 2001. I had not seen an copy since, until a friend sent me the post-WM 18 wrap up issue. The "editorial" stance hadn't changed one bit (i.e. "Everything is Hogan's Fault"), and the layout remained remedial at best (grainy photos, hideous amateur artwork, mis-spellings galore and fractured sentence structure). It seemed that the decline of the Torch coincided with the sale of WCW and the folding of ECW--less news and interview content means more "opinion" and "analysis". While Mitchell remains amusing and Powell insightful, Pat McNiell is brutal to read. The departure of Chris Zavisa reduced the Torch's Japanese coverage to almost nil. This leaves Wade Keller. For someone who seems so serious about the wrestling business (and wastes no time critiquing every detail), Keller is responsible for some of the most ludicrous ideas I've ever heard. Examples? How about Pro Wrestling video game simulation PPV's. One could watch a PPV where "dream match-ups" are executed with video game technology--amazing! Just imagine the non-stop excitement of watching a video game without the boring requirement of game play (and all for $14.95). Or, how about putting bright colored lights inside the ropes, so when someone touches them they start flashing. And I'm supposed to believe Russo was an idiot.
All this aside, Keller felt it necessary to mention Roddy Piper's "male personal assistant" three times in this single issue. Keller's veiled inferences are embarassing and childish. Only a complete idiot would be unable to grasp Keller's intended message (he's so clever). Piper's private life is of no concern to me. It in no way affects my opinion of him as a performer. The "news tidbit" even make reference to Piper's selfless offers of advice, wisdom and history to the younger wrestlers. Why doesn't Keller just say what he really thinks? I guess it's easier for him to facilitate innuendo than to directly smear Piper. Plus, Wade needs to save his energies for that next in-depth installment of "How I Hate Jesse Ventura...Let Me Count the Ways".
