The world rejoices. (espn.com)

I was really worried he'd be put out to stud when the Nationals brought out those freakish birds.

Does any other hockey team have a mascot?

Youppi is adorable, though.

The Calgary Flames have Harvey the Hound.

Vancouver Canucks-Fin

Toronto Maple Leafs-Carlton the Bear (seen here confronting Matthew Barnaby)

Those three are off the top of my head, but here's a list of NHL mascots.

edit: Add me to the list rejoicing at the new life of that Youppi! has found with Les Canadiens.

And in so doing, go down in history as the Bo Jackson of mascots. Good for him.

I believe the best way to describe this is from our friends at Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary:

Main Entry: fan·tab·u·lous
Pronunciation: fan-'ta-by&-l&s
Function: adjective
Etymology: blend of fantastic and fabulous
slang : marvelously good

Can't begin to say how awesome this is.

Just thinkin' out loud here - any chance the Blackhawks can pick up Chief Illiniwek when he's looking for a new gig?

That would require Bill Wirtz to actually spend money. What are the odds?

The Flames have been claiming for years that Harvey the Hound was the NHL's first full-time mascot, joining the team in 1984.

Harvey the Hound may be the first mascot in the NHL, but he didn't join when the Flames moved to Calgary.

I only know this because in the 2003-4 season, I went to a game which proclaimed it was Harvey the Hound's 20th birthday. The 16th of February, 1984 was the debut of Harvey.

Why this knowledge remains in my head is a mystery to me.

With the new CBA, every team is on an even playing field with salaries. This plays best for the Bruins more than any NHL team.
