With Galavision showing essentially only AAA the first half of the year I really got out of my Saturday/Sunday lucha taping habit. They finally are running CMLL again, although they are running about five months behind.

As a huge Dr.Wagner Jr. and Shocker fan, this pleases me to no end (although with Shocker jumping to AAA, I guess his best matches will now be against midgets and transvestites--not as exciting as it sounds).

The main reason for this post is that I have been knocked out by the work of Mistico. You must tune in and check this guy out, he's freakin' amazing! He's an extremely exciting high flyer with incredible poise and grace (reminicient of a young Rey Jr). He has had many stellar performances since his debut last summer and at least three Match of the Year candidates:

Mistico vs. Averno (1/30 Arena Coliseo de Guadalajara)
Mistico vs. Ultimo Guerrero (2/25/05 Arena Mexico)
Mistico vs. Averno (2/11/05 Arena Mexico)

Try and catch Mistico on CMLL, he rules!

Cubs even has the schedules up so you know when he's on:

http://thecubsfan.com/cmll/luchatimes.htm

With the exceptions of the Angle/HBK, Batista's slow turn, Eddie/Rey and Hogan/HBK, there hasn't been much grabbing my attention US-wise this year. So I've been heavy into Puroresu, Lucha and MMA.

NOAH has been very entertaining this year (especially the 7/18 Tokyo Dome Show) by featuring many outsiders like Tenyru, Minoru Suzuki, Kawada, Sasaki and Low Ki in fresh match-ups with their regulars. Satoshi Kojima has been dynamic (at least the first half of the year), winning the Triple Crown and the IWGP belts in two MOTY candidates (see the 2/16 match with Kawada, killer match!). The Differ Cup was very fun featuring the final matches of the world's best tag team 2003-2005, KENTA & Marufuji (the match with Spanky & Kaz Hayashi kicked ass).

Having my lucha year screwed up by a steady diet of AAA, I've been waiting for Alfredo to finish the Mistico comps he's been working on.

They finally became availiable this weekend:

I just got Galavision a couple months ago, and have REALLY been enjoying CMLL. I've been dying to watch it ever since I started reading reviews in the Figure Four Weekly, and am very impressed with the little of the product I've seen. I just recently got to see the Mistico/Guerrero match and thought it was tremendous.

It's certainly not a style that will appeal to everyone, but as it's own niche it's tremendously entertaining. Not so much AAA, but I blame that on the lack of Super Porky.

The answer to WWE's financial problems...

Never 'Wiener of the Day', and is actually quite bitter about it.

The 2003 Differ Cup definintely had a deeper field and featured an insane three match performance by Ultimo Dragon.

Although the over-all match quality was better in 2003, the 2005 show had better top matches, no question.

This tournament was also essentially the last big series of matches for, what has been, the best tag team in the world over the last three years: Naomichi Marufuji & KENTA.

They delivered three tremendous matches, highlighting the tournament with a great **** match in the semi and going off the charts in the finals.

5/7/05 Differ Cup Semi Final: Naomichi Marufuji & KENTA beat Kaz Hayashi & Leonardo Spanky

5/8/05 Differ Cup Final: Naomichi Marufuji & KENTA beat Ikuto Hidaka & Minoru Fujita

These two matches alone are worth ordering the tape/dvd. The Final is the best Jr Heavyweight Tag match since KENTA/Marufuji beat Kanemaru/Hashi on 9/12/03.

Marufuji & KENTA dropped the GHC Jr Heavyweight Tag Titles to Yoshinobu Kanemaru & Takashi Sugiura on 6/5/05 (I haven't seen this yet).

Marufuji & KENTA are being split up and elevated. At the 7/18/05 Destiny NOAH Tokyo Dome Show, KENTA won the GHC Jr. Heavyweight Title over Yoshinobu Kanemaru and Naomichi Marufuji with Minoru Suzuki beat Jun Akiyama & Makoto Hashi for the GHC Tag Team Titles in what were dynamite matches on the biggest card of the year.
