Eh. Routh looks better as Kent than Superman, but that may be because the costume is just kinda goofy in this age of gritty, humanistic superhero flicks.
It looks pretty gay. And what's with the S on the belt buckle? Is that so that if the S gets ripped off his chest, people will still know that he's Superman? I'd assume the flying, x-ray vision, heat vision, frost breath, and super strength would do a decent job of giving it away, but whatever...
That said, I've got to agree with oldschoolhero. I saw the pics of Routh as Clark Kent and he works.
Remember, though, that the idea of Krypton, IIRC, was that the gravity was completely different than Earth's -- therefore, you could have a normal looking Kryptonian on Earth being able to leap tall buildings with a single bound, etc.
Once again, I implore you all to stop being Comic Book Guys before the movie comes out -- you know and I know we're all going to see it, anyway.

I agree. For Batman's first movie (post Adam Ward era), they went with an all-black look...and the X-men were in all black during their movies...I would have hoped for something similar.
The "S" insignia looks good, but I'm not sure about the "S" buckle though. What's next..."S" on the boots, too?
EDIT: Was it just me, or was the Spiderman costume also a bit darker than in the comics?
(edited by SOK on 23.4.05 0734) I'm pretty fly...for a bald guy!
I thought the Spider-Man costume was about the same as the comics. The reason I think Superman's costume should be brighter, though, is because Superman is really just about the "brightest" of superheroes. I mean, Superman doesn't work in darkness, and he isn't some sort of urban legend-type hero like Batman. Superman's costume is meant to attract attention.
I don't like the "evil Superman" dark red, the smallish "S" symbol on the chest, or the "S" buckle on the Speedo-like tights. I don't mind the textured look of the suit and actually like the raised "S" on the chest. We can't see from the pic, but I hope there'll be a yellow "S" on the cape. As for Brandon Routh's physique, I think he looks okay. I don't remember Christopher Reeves looking particularly big as Superman.
I'm not crazy about the costume, but I still have confidence in Bryan SInger & crew.
I don't know if we'll ever see Tom Welling in tights, but Smallville's producers said there'd be no flying, and that's already happened, so who knows?
It looks somewhat underwhelming and dare I say...fetishistic. The S-shield should be more prominent. Routh just does not look impressive or like Superman should in costume.

The stupid "S" belt-buckle points right down to Kal-El's Superjunk. Is that what you want eyes drawn to?
Plus, yes, the red's too dark and the chest's S-shield is too small...and what's with the cross-hatching pattern in lagboyz_jfk's hi-res photo?
Maybe, unlike Batman, they should've just left the franchise well enough alone. This punk couldn't touch Christopher Reeve if he had a whole pocketful of Kryptonite (w/ apologies to the Spin Doctors.)
I still think Tom Welling should have been Superman, it just works for him and the whole public has already accepetd him as Superman anyway, it would have been better casting with him, the guys actually ripped. It seems that this new guy is a joke, but i also havent seen him act so im not gunna say anything for sure. The costume is rather pathetic but kinda cool at the same time, its like old yet new at the same time...kinda cool... But hell, who am i to say anything, im just a friggin comic book geek, as long as the fanstastic four movie and the next punisher are good, im happy...and we all know we're going to see the Superman movie opening night anyway, thats what comic book geeks do...
If anything, I think making the blue a darker tone was a nice touch, but a brighter red would have offset it much better and looked a Hell of a lot cooler, IMO. My problem with Routh isn't his size, but that he just doesn't come across as mythic in the costume. He sort of just looks like a guy wearing a Superman outfit to a Halloween party.
