That was a BRILLIANT fight, and for once the judges had it right on, with all three scoring it for Morales, 115-113. I'd like to know exactly why Morales turned southpaw in round 12. We were speculating that maybe he'd hurt one of his hands.

By winning Morales becomes a mandatory challenger for...Marco Antonio Barrera. Hmmmm.

They're sure to show the replay along with the Vargas comeback fight this Saturday on HBO.

Morales - Pacquiao was indeed an excellent fight, made all the more so (as Jay Jay Dean pointed out) by the fact that the judges managed to get the decision right. The fight also serves as further proof that in boxing, common opponents are meaningless - Morales beat Pacquiao, who TKO'd Barrera, who is the only man to beat Morales (and has done it twice). So this sets up Morales - Barrera IV, which I'm sure will be another battle for the ages, on par with their first three fights. Hopefully we'll also get to see Morales - Pacquiao II sometime in the near future. Certainly Pacquiao is entitled to a rematch; not just because of his game effort, but also in light of the fact that the major turning point of the fight came when Pacquiao was cut above the right eye by a Morales head-butt (and not a punch, as the replays clearly showed).

I should also mention that, as great as Morales - Pacquiao was, it was NOT (IMHO) the fight of the night. That prize goes to the battle between Mexico's Jorge Arce and Australia's Hussein Hussein. Indeed, Arce - Hussein wasn't just fight-of-the-night, it is also a leading candidate for fight-of-the-year. To be honest, I'm still not sure Hussein's trainer did the right thing by throwing in the towel in the tenth round. Hopefully HBO will re-play this fight as well as Morales - Pacquiao this Saturday.

Having only read the write ups on foxsports.com for the Hussein fight it seems like he was in trouble. Hussein says he was feeling dizzy every time he got hit on the jaw and he had a suspected brokenjaw. If anyone is going to get the decision to step in right, I think it would be Jeff Fenech.

Juan Manuel Marquez should still be in the mix also. Between those four I think there should be at least another 2 great super-featherweight fights of 2005.

Morales, and probably Barrera could also probably step up to 135 and take out any of the top four there (Corrales, Freitas, Castillo and Casamayor). Marquez could probably be competitive up there too, although Manny just moved up and looks pretty maxed out.

I agree about Pacquaio being maxed out at 130, but if he stayed there I think he could do well. There don't seem to be any real money fights at 126, which is probably where he should stay, except for a rematch with Marquez. (They said he started out at 106 during the broadcast. That's a LOT of weight classes to move up in a career.) I really wonder if Pacquaio would start out differently in a rematch with Morales, and we were speculating what would've happened if the fight was scheduled for 15 rounds instead of 12, because Manny was coming on in the end. (Of course, Morales still would've won, because he has a chin of GRANITE.)

I really think Morales would be GREAT at 135, now that you mention it, and I can't really see him losing to ANY of those guys you mentioned.

I also checked the HBO website and they're NOT showing a replay of Arce-Hussein, which I suspected and was the reason I didn't touch on it earlier. Too bad, because that WAS an awesome fight. I'd like to see Arce again after the cut on his nose is healed some time in the next year or so. Man, that was a NASTY one.

BTW, HBO is leading off their telecast with the Morales-Pacquaio replay, followed by the Vargas-Joval bout. Vargas-Joval should probably be short and sweet if Vargas still has his power. Joval is 33-3 (15 KOs) but he hasn't beaten anyone of note, and in July he lost an IBF Middleweight Title eliminator to an Aussie named Sam Soliman, he of the SEVEN losses on his record (though he's won 18 in a row), by scores of 120-107, 120-107, and 119-108. At 36 years old I don't really look for him to come back strongly from that.

I think Tiger's going to clean up here. From what I've heard from friends and family who are marshalling at Baltusrol, the course is set up perfectly for his game. Anyway, I've got my tickets for Friday and Sunday.
