The Great American race is here again. The Twin 125s Gatorade Duels (ugh) were very interesting, with DEI sweeping the first race, then Kevin Harvick trying to wreck the field in the second. I'd like to see another DEI win, but I don't think they're going to be able to pull it off, so I'm going with Jeff Gordon or Tony Stewart to win.

I dunno. I think DEI's still got another rabbit or two in its hat. Both Junior and Mikey were running really strong at the end of the first 150, and they always seem to be able to get things just right on race day at Daytona and Talladega.

But Smoke's always a good choice and Gordon seems to be pretty dialed in on the restrictor plate tracks lately, so you could be right. The highlight, however, will be seeing just how many people try to boot Kevin Harvick into the wall before they get to turn three on the first lap. This could be '79 all over again.

Harvick is an idiot. To be running second and to be that irresponsible is a joke. These Daytona cars have been worked on since last July specifically for this Sunday, and due to his "I want to be Dale Earnhardt without the brains, skill and saavy" mentality, at least five guys are running in backups.

The Twin 150s (it's unnatural to say that, but saying the Gatorade Duel does not work) were an all-Chevy parade, but with 27 Chevys vs only 12 Fords, it's not really as bad as it looks.

I'm thinking either Tony Stewart or Dale Jarrett.

NBFan, that is a pretty ridiculous comment considering the situation. They were all drafting each other very closely, Jimmie checked up, and Harvick got into him. Nascar, and Jimmie Johnson, after seeing the tape, said it was just racing incident, not anybody's fault.

I'm not a big NASCAR fan, but that was a really good race today. Congratulations to Jeff Gordon on his 4th win.

Then he got his ass beaten in New England again. Every year he's the top MVP candidate. Every year he's supposed to be the best. Every year he's going to carry the Colts to the Super Bowl. Big Red, bump drafting on straights is part and parcel of NASCAR (especially in restrictor plate races).

You don't bump draft into the apex of a corner.

It's reckless.

Just because he wasn't fined or sanctioned doesn't mean that it's not wrong. His reasoning is, "If I can't get around him on the straights or out drive him into the corners, I'll spin him out." I have no problem with aggressive driving or non-stop contact because that's a huge factor in what makes NASCAR great, but Harvick was wrong. I don't like cautions, especially needless ones.

Is Kyle Busch's pit box sign a South Park character? That might be the best thing ever.

I thought Stewart had the damn race. I at least expected Junior to push him a little more and return last year's favor. In the end Stewart was hung out to dry, it's to bad he slipped all the way to seventh though. I think if Waltrip hadn't blown up they would have been able to pull away.

If Junior doesn't sand bag then I don't know what he was doing during the first 190 or so laps. That car came out of nowhere.

A great race, it's going to be a crazy season.

Man, when Earnhardt freight-trained Smoke on the high side I was going nuts. I thought he was going to check out right then and there. Then, of course, there's a caution and Kurt Freaking Busch ends up stealing second. Gordon winning bugged me, of course, but Kurt Busch makes me damn near homicidal.

And you're right; he did come out of nowhere. It seems like lately he's been using the first half of races to kind of figure out what needs to be done with the car to make it run hot at the end. Today it just seemed like they got things dialed in toward the end, but he was blocked off. When he finally got a little space to move, there was nobody stopping him.

As for the whole Harvick situation, I tend to believe him. NOBODY is stupid enough to bump draft in a corner. However, when you have the history that Harvick has of doing stupid things that lead to cars being torn into a thousand pieces, you don't get the benefit of the doubt.

Funniest thing of the race was courtesy of the NASCAR In-Car feed that was previewed on my cable was Tony Stewart's feed after he played bumper cars with Jimmie Johnson on Lap 198 yell "IT WASN'T MY FUCKING FAULT!" to his pit crew.

[make your own Snitsky joke here]

I liked the short finish, but I can see why some people thought it was contrived with all of the yellow flags.

I don't believe Junior was sandbagging, as I'd tend to believe he more than likely was had he run at the end of the lead pack all day. He'd have to have been CRAZY to sit around riding 20th all day when the "big one" is a-comin'.

The 500 is kind of overrated from a racing standpoint. No one wants to lose their place in line, so they don't try to go by Stewart? Bah. There's SO much more pressure on the teams and drivers not to lose at the 500 than at Talladega or even in the Pepsi 400.

The ending, though, OHMYGOD. Even Mrs. JJD was up off the couch smacking me on the back when Dale Jr. made that pass on the outside. I really think he planned to give Tony a push to stay up front, but he had such a monster run that he was able to go by on the outside. I was flipping out, myself. Then Kasey Kahne had to go and hit the wall and bring out a caution and ruin our sprint to the finish.

I really thought Tony Stewart and Jimmie Johnson might run each other off the track, too. "If Chad wants to come talk about it I'm easily accessible." I love Tony Stewart.

I can't believe they're not going to the Rock next week. It doesn't seem fair that they have to go all the way to California. Whoever made the NASCAR schedule sure didn't do the teams any favors from a travel perspective.
