ESPN Insider says that the Mets offered Pedro a guranteed FOURTH year on that contract - which makes it an even $50M at least - and that Pedro is leaning heavily towards that.

As a Met fan, I still don't know what to think of this.

Word from WFAN, via WEEI et al in Boston is that he just accepted the deal.

Pedro the Met.

If the report is correct and Pedro signs with the Mets today (and considering on Friday there were reports Pedro was all set to re-sign with Boston, so I'll take it with a grain of salt), it would be interesting historically.

12-13-96: Clemens leaves Boston to sign with Blue Jays.
12-13-04: Pedro leaves Boston to sign with Mets.

Very difficult to get the odds that the two most dominant pitchers for an organization in the last 75 years would both depart on the same date.

If Pedro does end up a Met with a 4 year deal, does that make someone really question why they couldn't give Vlad the years without the insurance but they could give Pedro and his balky shoulder the years and money without the insurance.

As a Mets fan, I hate this deal. It just reeks of yet another overpaid player on the way down coming to cash his checks.

I've heard 4 years, 56 million. That is obscene. http://redsox.bostonherald.com/redSox/view.bg?articleid=58655

They've replaced one bad GM (Steve Phillips) with another who likes Pedro more (Omar Minaya).

Guess what, the Mets gave Kris Benson 7.5 million dollars a year, and Pedro Martinez is and always will be twice as good as Kris Benson. Period.

They gave Kris Benson way too much money too. What's your point? 4 years at 14 million dollars per is way too much money to throw at a guy with the arm history that Pedro has.

Well, Pedro *is* an upgrade over Al Leiter, so as a Mets fan I'll take it.

That gives the Mets a rotation of Martinez, Tom Glavine, Steve Trachsel, Kris Benson, and Victor Zambrano. Potentially awesome, or at least really good, but certainly risky as well.

Minaya gets his "big splash" move, and it doesn't involve trading away any of the blue chip infielders. But I won't necessarily believe it's happened until I see the guy standing on stage in blue and orange.

They still should have never traded Kazmir for Zambrano.

I had the usual love/hate relationship with Pedro while he was with the Sox, but now that he's gone I can't wait to see how things pan out with him and the Mets. It's got real potential to be Clemens-esque or a total train wreck, perhaps both, over the course of 4 years.

I'm really surprised that Pedro is going to the NL. Is he going to be willing to throw up and in knowing that he is going to have to hit?

That being said I think he will do really well for himself in the NL his first year or so. He's still got that Pedro mystique that a lot of hitters haven't had the chance to see yet, not to mention a lot of his stuff. Of course the run support won't be there like it was either.

With the money saved can Boston enter the Hudson sweepstakes?

Pedro threw up and in when he was in the N.L. in the mid 90's, and at that time he was throwing high 90's, compared to the high 80's/low 90's he throws now, so he shouldn't worry about hitting. Plus, he doesn't go up to the plate looking to swing anyway.
How many starts into the season will the New York papers begin to post an over/under line on the number of times Pedro shakes off Piazza in a game? And, considering the rocky relationship that developed between Pedro and Joe Kerrigan when Kerrigan tried to micromanage his pitching, the interaction between Pedro and Met Pitching Guru Peterson could be interesting. IF the Mets struggle to be in the race, Pedro will be taking many mini-vacations to the Dominican during the season.
Gettting Pedro's money off the books allows the Red Sox to make a serious push for Renteria. By doing that, it allows them to make their top shortstop prospect Hanley Ramirez available in trades, with the possible destinations being either Oakland for Hudson, Florida for Burnett, or Florida for Burnett to flip for Hudson. If they get Hudson out of this, it is a great move. Either way, I can't rip management after last season, at least until the first 2 game losing streak, during spring training.

Sounds like Theo's taking the Belichick approach to personnel, which is fine by me.

One question: If Kris Benson cheats on his wife, does Anna count Pedro's midget?

People (including myself) said the same thing about Clemens going to the NL, & he only answered those people by winning the Cy Young in his first year in the league...

I really wanted Pedro that but the Mets are showing more incompetence with this deal. 14 mil a year? That's crazy!

I hope the Sox make a run at Hudson (I think the Braves will get him, Giles is a Billy Beane player) but I think they will land Pavano and/or Millwood now. I really hope they don't go crawling back to Lowe b/c all he will do is laugh at them.

The way the Dan Patrick Show (on ESPN radio!) made it sound was that he didn't have to take the MRI, but I don't know if thats the case, I was in and out of the car.

That'd be something else wouldn't it?

And for any Mets fans who don't know about the midget, here's something to fill you in a bit.

I really think the Mets are taking a stupid chance here. Some say a 90% torn labrum exists in his shoulder, and they just don't care. Is he going to join Mo Vaughn on the list of injured but paid?

Tom Tango answered my question: most managers for one player. Mike Morgan had 24 managers in 22 seasons. He says Dave Kingman (it helps that Kingman had 5 different managers in 1977 alone)
