When I heard about this, I thought to myself "oh no, another Rolling Stone list that will piss me off because the White Stripes and Coldplay will be in the Top 10". But after reading this list, I personally think this is the best one they have done. Sure, there are a few I disagree with, but as whole, not too shabby of a list.
A little heavy on the 50s-70s stuff, but it's not a bad list. And I guess you could argue that not much has come out lately that's going to be seen as a timeless classic.
There's only a few songs on there that I can't stand, while recent lists have been full of songs that I haven't liked. Of course, my music taste is all over the board weird...
I like Dylan, but to suggest that that's the best rock song of all time is, well, designed to stir up controversy and get more people to look at or read the magazine.
The above comment is even more applicable to the piece of sophomoric philosophical dreck that they rated at number 3.
Oh well, it's a list and I shouldn't get irritated by idiots trying to prove their cool credentials.

My biggest pet peeve on any music "Best of All-Time" list, is the constant presence of Nirvana/Nevermind/Smells Like Teen Spirit in the Top Ten of EVERYTHING. Don't they know The Beatles have that market cornered already?
My biggest complaint is the "Stairway to Heaven" is #31. Regardless of how many times the song has been played & played & played, it should merit Top 5 respect.

I fear for you, Grimis....
Anyway, I love classic rock as much as everyone else, but it would be nice if these lists weren't just the same few songs shifted around. I just doesn't say much about the current music scene if nothing released in the last 10 years breaks into the top 50.
I like the nods to Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye and Nirvana - but hip hop doesn't break the top 50? For shame....
"On [Election Night], the voice of the people was heard. I promise not to repeat what they said out of respect for the mentally-retarded."
Hogan: Lose Yourself is BETTER than Back in Black? Yeah, and Bush is an Athiest.
Come back in 20 years and tell me Back in Black is better than...anything. Drunk girls can't even dance to that song. Kinda like "You Shook Me All Night Long" Yuck. AC/DC died in the back of a car, with Bon Scott.

I think that's just a RS / Generation thing. Give it about 10-15 more years. I saw "Fuck tha Police" on there, among others, which shocked me, given how the hypocritical hippies (most of whom complied this list) vilified that song as the end of the world at the time and probably why NWA, PE, etc still hold up so well - that's usually how these lists work. Times They Are a-Changin' indeed...
speaking of which...
F'N SHAPIRO: I know, right? Way too few for history's greatest songwriter and performing artist and, let's face it, guy. And only one in the top 10?
We all know it's #2 behind Tangled Up in Blue!
You better be joking...I was on *such* a good streak of not agreeing with you (again);-) and then you go and say something like that! Cept for performing artist. EVERYONE knows that was ELVIS

Demonstrations are a drag. Besides, we're much too high
Give them props for not having too much recent music on there, cause to be frank, 80% of music since August of 1981 sucks, just the same for 99.9999% of anything in the last 5 years.
The Beatles are overrepresented, but that's to be expected. And I take issue with the anthem for Commintern at number 3. But the "Guzi Room's" theme is number 310, so life is good.

Comintern? "Draped in the Hammer and Sickle"? Say what you will about it being a song celebrating a kind of utopian socialism, but I hardly think John Lennon was sitting there thinking, "Soviet Communism is the solution!" I don't think his idea was to celebrate an all-too-obvious form of iron tyranny; Lennon couldn't have loved Leninism. And the military aggression of the Hammer and Sickle turned him off too. But, lord, just because it's socialist doesn't make "Imagine" the anthem of some "Rooskie Commyooniss!"

Not sure what list you were looking at cause I see Marvin Gaye and Aretha Franklin both in the top ten. Then you got Otis Redding, Martha and the Vandellas, Smokey Robinson, Little Richard, The Ronettes, and Tina Turner all in the top 50 who you can always find in the R&B/Hip Hop section of you local music store.
It says this is the secound 'Top 500' list, does anyone have a link to the first one? I wouldn't mind seeing what's changed.
It's pretty sad when the only songs listed for the last five years are Eminem's STAN (#290) and LOSE YOURSELF (#166) and Outkast's HEY YA! (#180) which are all (c)rap.

One small problem: None of those artists would commonly be described as Hip-Hop. Most of the new R&B is bastardized shit that probably embarasses the artists mentioned above.
