I'm trying to put together a CD of really good romantic songs, and I'd like suggestions from people. Some possibilities are as follows:

These Arms of Mine: Otis Redding
Endless Love: Luther Vandross
Three Times a Lady: Lionel Richie and the Commodores
Turn the Lights Down Low: Smoky Robinson
Easy: Lionel Richie and the Commodores (maybe)
Crazy Love: Van Morrison and Bob Marley (maybe)
At Last - Etta James
When I Look in Your Eyes - Etta James

Any other suggestions would be much appreciated.

Think about you - Guns N' Roses
It's not a ballad, hell it's pure rock-n-roll but one of the most romantic songs I've ever heard..

Trying to come up with something that you could probably use..but my mind draws a blank...

You can never lose with Cheap Trick's "I Want You to Want Me". Well, never is a bit strong, but it does seem to work with the ladies.

There isn't a lady alive that wouldn't melt for Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes."

Also, since you seem to favor the oldies:
Billie Holiday - As Time Goes By (any version of that song is nice, but I like this one the best)
Dean Martin - You're Nobody 'Till Somebody Loves You
Tony Bennett - The Way You Look Tonight (Frank Sinatra does a great version too)
Patsy Cline - Crazy

Finally, a nice modern one is Sarah McLachlan's "Ice Cream," it is super-cute!

Trust me, I have matching X chromosomes, I know my romantic songs

It's all relative, of course. Some people like love themes from Disney Animation or 80s hair band power ballads or 70s R&B schlock... But this bunch'll do you right any time:

Otis Redding - Try a Little Tenderness
Al Greene - Let's Stay Together
Carmen MacRae - Every Time We Say Goodbye
Crash Vegas - Smoke
Lemonheads - Into Your Arms
Mazzy Star - Fade Into You
Elvis Costello - Almost Blue
Stan Rogers - 45 Years
Ben Harper - Forever
Chet Baker - Time After Time
Lowest of the Low - Subversives (relatively obscure, but do yourself a favor and try to find it)

I'm sure there's more I'm missing, but I'm nowhere near my CD collection.

Anything by Sam MF'n Cooke can steer you in no wrong direction.

I've always found "Alison" by Elvis Costello does the trick.

Unless the girl in question is named Alison (or Allison in my case) and then she probably hates the song with a passion.

Call My Name by Prince
Agree with the Sam Cooke recommendation.
Love you till the end of Time by Mariah Carey is WAY underrated.

Drawing a HUGE blank right now.

The fact that it took until post #10 for someone to mention "God Only Knows" by the Beach Boys makes me think ill of the W community.

Disclaimer: I have 3,000+ posts here. This means I don't date as often as I should A few I'll throw out from just scanning my Media Player list, mostly sort of newer stuff, since the standards are pretty well trod here:
"Sway" - Bic Runga
"In The Morning/Crazy Happy" - Brenda Weiler
"Runaway" - The Corrs
"Fall at Your Feet" - Crowded House
"Collide" - Howie Day
"Try Whistling This" - Neil Finn
"The World Can Wait" - Over The Rhine
"Strange Currencies", "At My Most Beautiful" - REM
"Have I Told You Lately" - Van Morrison

The hell with the witty cartoon. They won, there's really nothing worth laughing about right now. There is only the prospect of endless war and endless death.

If you are going Guns N' Roses, shouldn't 'I used to love her but I had to kill her' be up there? Always a good song to request at weddings. Especially when the bar has been open a few hours.
Cheap Trick: The Flame.
Phil Collins/Genesis: One More Night.
And, I hate to admit this, Manilow does work.

I'm sitting here with my girlfriend right now and we are doing this together, how ironic.

"Every move you Make" - The Eagles
"Something" - The Beatles
"when a Man Loves a Woman" - Michael Bolton
"Baby I Love Your Way" - Peter Frampton
"Come Away With Me" - Nora Jones
"My Heart Will Go On" - Celine Dion
"Come What May" - Moulin Rouge Soundtrack

The list could go on forever

My best friend's wedding is in about two weeks. Please don't give me ideas. :D

"Every Breath You Take" is by The Police. Thin air, indeed.

As for contributing to this thread, Mrs. JJD suggests "Heaven" by Bryan Adams, and "Open Arms" and "Faithfully" by Journey. "Just the Way You Are" and "She's Always a Woman" by Billy Joel aren't bad, either.

Thank you all for your responses. It's all shaping up pretty nicely, and I might even make two CDs at this point.

Either way, it'll be part of some romantic night coming up. And you have helped that along:-)

Unchained Medley by the Righteous Brothers must be on that disc.
I would also suggest some Dido.

I have a theory that White Stripes albums are like Star Trek movies. The even numbered albums (De Stijl, Elephant) are far superior to the odd numbered albums (The White Stripes, White Blood Cells).
