I listened to the last half of it and only when the last line included the word 'vertigo' did I clue in. Of course, the DJ came on and said that this was the new U2 track.
I've since downloaded it, and it sounds pretty cool. Not exactly what you'd expect from them, but U2 has a long history of releasing first singles that are largely intended to set the tone for the new album --- just look at With or Without You, Desire, The Fly, Numb, Discotheque (with that HORRIBLE video that almost singlehandedly sunk the Pop tour), Beautiful Day.

I wasn't aware non-rock stations even played U2. Where did you expect to hear it?

In the market I live in (as well as markets that my mom and some friends live in, in Florida), there seems to be a kind of schizophrenia related to U2. Basically, anything up to Achtung Baby winds up on rock stations. "New Year's Day," no matter how early 1980's New Wave it might sound, is still ROCK STATION MATERIAL. On the other hand, anything post-Achtung Baby winds up on MIX radio. You know what I mean by MIX radio. There's always a mix station, and they always manage to combine a few decent light rock songs with the hideous and loathsome.
"Beautiful Day" is MIX fodder, and I don't even know why, especially when Limp Biscuits is considered CLASSIC ROCK by the CLASSIC ROCK station. Then again, the CLASSIC ROCK station doesn't play anything written before 1970. Except "Revolution" by the Beatles, but nothing else. I just don't understand. I really don't.

The problem with some of the local rock stations I've encountered is that there's often two "classic rock" stations: one plays newer harder stuff, like Metallica, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park; the other plays more, uh, Supertramp and Jethro Tull. But, since both of them play Led Zeppelin, they both designate themselves as classic rock stations, despite the fact that they're probably best thought of as hard rock v. soft-ish rock.
So the hard rock station, in an effort to carve out more of a niche market, programs Limp Bizkit, too. There's something really unnerving about hearing "Nookie" blasting out just after sitting through Pink Floyd's "Brain Damage"/"Eclipse."
