Up until a few hours ago, it was Matt Clement. Now, we get Orlando Cabrera and Doug Mienkewicz for Nomar and a prospect? This is idiocy. At least they could have gotten a highly touted prospect to help sell the deal, but instead they give up a prospect.

Giving up Gonzalez is nothing, Beltran and Harris were decent prospects, but having a hitter like Nomar is well worth it. Gonzalez was a huge hole in their lineup this season, and a run at the wild card is an excellent possibility now. If they can make it to the postseason, like in years past, anything can happen. Jim Hendry is the best GM they've had in years, and definitely top 5 in the league.

This is exactly how I feel. I am shocked they traded him. Also adding to the fact, that as of last night he was hurting from the Achillies injury. Though I do feel bad for Doug Mientkiewicz who now has to play against his former team right away (tonight?, maybe tomorrow?). But the last line of the ESPN report is the one that gets me.

Nomar sitting out the whole 12 inning game against the Yankees was the icing on the cake, the man just didn't want to be there anymore. The Sox still have Manny and Ortiz to go along with a good cast of hitters on offense, and their defense just got a whole lot better. There have been a lot of extended innings for Boston opponets because of booted balls and bad tosses. Also Cabrera is a pretty damn good shortstop who will only be better now that he has some protection. Not only that Boston goes into a big off season with one less headache to worry about.
The Cubs made out bigtime as well. They get the ultimate Rent-A-Player and give up nothing that hurts them in the near future.

This looks like a good one to me. I liked Agon, but he wasn't exactly awesome. Now, Michael Barrett wears 5, so does Nomar get that, or does he do a 55, or does he take 4? (8 is also now available).
Nomar is going to really find out what it is like to be adored. Especially if he takes us to the Series.

As a Cardinals fan, I am mixed here. I really don't see the Cubs, or anyone in the NL for that matter, as a threat right now, Nomar or otherwise (Note: I am dreading a August/September pitching collapse the way many others have been predicting, so this is open to change). But if the Cards and Cubs meet in the NLCS (because the idiots doing the schedule had the two play all their games BEFORE AUGUST), Nomar wouold be a GREAT addition to an already-intense rivalry, an addition that scares me with its potential.
So i short, Nomar is a good player, which=good rivalry. But, Nomar is a good player, which=threat to Cards if their pitching drops off. But I can't wait to see the response if he ever makes it to Busch Stadium in a Cubs uni. | BOSsportsfan34

Beltran is a good pickup. But now we have a gapping hole at short cause Alex Gonzo is not Orlando =(

And it depends what they do with their option on Alou. They're saving nearly five million by trading away Gonzalez, and the option on Alou's contract is either 9 or 9.5 million. It is very possible that they could resign him.

Maybe, maybe not. He already turned down a 4yr/$62M deal from the Red Sox last year (which was one of the reasons the Sox pursued A-Rod). Will the Cubs give him the same offer? And would he still take it? I think Nomar most likely goes home to LA with a slight chance he signs with the Yanks.
