Legends of Wrestling: Showdown is being released this week. I got the original LOW and wasn't too impressed, so I skipped LOW 2. However, I'm really thinking about getting Showdown, due to the 70+ legends in the game, and the fact they have real stadiums and arenas. The thought of having Randy Savage vs. Ricky Steamboat in the Silverdome or Bret Hart vs. Davey Boy Smith in Wembley Stadium just seems really cool to me. Is anyone planning on getting the game?

Wow I had no idea there was another Legends game coming out with that many wrestlers and stadiums. I've never played the first two though, is there a career mode? Create a wrestler? Also anywhere I can find a list of the wrestlers and or stadiums?

The Ultimate Warrior was also involved in the games development. Take that as you will...

I can't wait for this game to come out.

Well, the first game was horrid control-wise, but it was their first try. I did enjoy how much depth was put into the second game, and if they followed that formula for the third game, then I will at least rent this one. I wouldn't buy it though; it ranks below every other wrestling game on the market usually for me (disclaimer: I never played the X-box Raw games).

Joe Wilson (looking at Interocitor manual)- Hey, here's something my wife could use in the house...
Crow T. Robot- A man?
Joe Wilson- An interocitor incorporating an electron sorter.
Cal Meechum- Oh, she'd probably gain 20 pounds while it did all the work for her.

I'd say it's high-time that the Stinger pays Sid Vicious back for his loss to him at Road Wild '99.

“Sid, I'm coming after you like a great white shark... I'm gonna chew you up and spit you out! Owwww!”

Really, though... I'm so excited about the chance to play as Sting (and in a relatively decent game, no less, for the first time since WCW/nWo Revenge), that I'm definitely giving this one at the very least a rental. If it impresses me enough, I might even buy it... but thus far, none of the LOW games have impressed me that much.

I'm also going to recreate the classic Diamond Dallas Page/Randy Savage feud. (And yeah, stop your snickering, I get that DDP isn't the most popular guy on the board, but that feud was awesome.)

Hmm... what other possible matchups here hold meaning for me? A lot of these guys are way old-school, and I only started watching in '97.

Hogan/Andre, Hogan/Savage, Steiners/Road Warriors, Lawler/Kaufman, Bret/Owen, Bret/Hogan, Hogan/Warrior, Sting/Hogan, Savage/Steamboat, Snuka/Muraco...

Fantasy matchups: Guerrero/Snuka, Sting/Andre, Sting/DiBiase, Dynamite Kid/Pillman...

Wow. The possibilities are endless. [holds up his hands in a placating gesture] Please, don't let this be an excuse to turn into a list thread.

Man, if only they could get the rights to have Flair in there, this would be an almost perfect list. Of course I'd also like to throw Benoit into that list, but that ain't bloody likely.

I did buy LOW2 (at a lower price once it had been out for a while) and while I guess it's not awful, it's not as fun as Smackdown and pretty much just collects dust now.

Flaws of the game in my mind includes a chain wrestling/reversal system that requires watching a meter and timing a button hit when that meter reaches a certain zone. The problem is that to do well in the game, when watching the meter, it's hard to actually watch the game itself. (Granted, it's nice for a game to actually have a chain wrestling system, but this one is just flawed)

Another problem I have is that the old-school wrestlers all have new-school wrestling moves. I knew this going in, but I didn't think it would bother me as much as it did. But I think part of that is that it seems that every other wrestler will do a Stone Cold Stunner or a Pedigree (and do it a LOT). Seeing Ricky Morton giving somebody the finger and hitting a stunner five times a match kind of takes away from the nostalgic experience.

Finally, the game has perhaps the most annoying method of unlocking extras ever created. As you win matches, the game rewards you with coins that can be used to buy extras (wrestlers, costumes, etc.). But you can't buy anything good with those coins, oh no. You must instead 'gamble' those coins in this stupid little unfun game to earn better, more valuable coins. There is a system to beat it, but even then it's not fun, it's work and ultimately not worth it to me.

There is a story mode, sort of. But it all basically boils down to going to each region, beating the jobbers, then beating the mid-carders, then beating the main eventers, and getting a title shot. Beat the champ, move on to next region. The "Create-a-Legend" is really weak, and just pales in comparison to Smackdown's create-a-wrestler.

The best parts is the wide selection of old-school wrestlers. And LOW2 had actual interviews with quite of few of the wrestlers on the game, which was cool.

But all in all, this is definitely a rental game. I would have to wait and see if Acclaim has drastically changed the game engine for the new LOW before I would be willing to buy it.

Adding big names like Warrior, Dusty, Jake the Snake, Sting, Savage, Hening and even DDP sure make this game a little more attractive (Where's Murdoch, Adonis and Honky?). It's got to feature a better control system and graphics to make it worth anyone's while. It's a game I've really really tried to like in the past as the idea is great, but it just hasn't been any fun.

Wow, that is an impressive list, I might have to check it out as a rental. I'll glad to play as Sting again as well as be able to play as Hennig, probably my all time favorite. I will have to have my all time dream match up of Hennig vs. Eddie. And also Eddie vs. Owen. And recreate the classics between Hennig and Hart.

I also enjoyed the DDP/Savage feud a lot, in fact I liked most of DDP's face run, although I think Raven and Benoit had a lot to do with their matches being good.

How come they can have Eddie Guerrero and Jerry Lawler but no Rock,Austin or HHH? Lesnar to, I know he's done with wrestling but they can still have him.

Back when they finalized the rosters, Eddie must not have been with WWE. Rock/Austin/HHH/Lesnar were. Anyone wanna make sure I know what I'm saying?

When Guerrero and Lawler briefly left WWF a few years ago, they were probably approached by Acclaim to use their likenesses for Legends of Wrestling and its sequels. Current WWE wrestlers cannot license themselves out unless they are not WWE employed. That's why even Hulk Hogan and Scott Steiner appeared in LOW 2 even though they were employed by WWE by the time the game came out. They made the contract and WWE couldn't do anything about it after the fact.

If guys like Foley, Lesnar or Austin want to, they could use their likenesses for the next LOW game.

Not sure about Foley... is he currently free from all contractural obligations in WWE? I know Austin and Lesnar are.

And which of their theme songs is in the public domain and thus, available for use in a non-WWE-affiliated game? I'm pretty sure that when Cactus Jack made his WWF debut, he used the same music he did in WCW, so surely Cactus Jack's theme is public-domain. How about Mankind's? Dude Loves? I'd be very surprised if Austin or Lesnar's themes are public-domain.

Having Austin and Foley in a future "Legends of Wrestling" game would rule all kinds of ass, though. Imagine playing as the WCW-era "Stunning" Steve Austin, and as all four faces of Foley.

I've got another suggestion to add to this list-- Goldberg.

My cousin rented the game Showdown; he said it was decent but he wouldnt buy it. Then again, he's not a big wrestling fan so who knows?

The roster is incredible, but is the gameplay? Sure, Ultimate Warrior was involved in developing it- but since when is he an expert on video games?

It does seem to be an improvement over the others in the execution of the career mode however; LOW 1 and 2 seemed to be more about Hulk Hogan and beating everyone up with him- (sure you could play as the others, but come on...) LOW:Showdown casts Hogan as more of a final boss; someone you are supposed to rise up the ranks to defeat in a final Showdown- It seems to challenge you to play as the other wrestlers by making Hogan seem to be a main obstacle to your success instead of the main good guy- its a little more interesting that way.

ALSO: Acclaim dumped the region thing where you have to win a title for each Region to become the U.S. champion and compete for the World Championship. Now its more of an era-based thing; you will see your wrestler progress through the 70's, 80's and 90's and get involved in real-life feuds!

EDIT: Strangely enough; everyone seems to end up feuding with Hogan for the World Title.

It could be interesting, but I'm saving up my money for "Smackdown vs. RAW" THQ's new follow-up to its superior Smackdown franchise!

You sure, bud? I thought Cactus always used Terry Funk's WWF music, not "Mr. Bang Bang" (the actual name of his WCW entrance song...it's available on CD at some replica belt store, along with "Steinerized" and other WCW "hits.") Remember how awful the lyrics were?

"He's not a (something)/Or a member of a gang/
He's Cactus Jack/Better known...as Mr. Bang Bang"

Side note: SHAME on WWE for replacing that tune with Cactus's WWF/E music on the recent Mick Foley: Greatest Hits and Misses double DVD. Fercryinoutloud, Vince, you probably own the rights to "Mr. Bang Bang" now, just let history be, will ya? Ye gods.

As for Mankind and Dude Love's music, I'm pretty sure those were John Johnson (sp?) creations, and thusly owned by WWF/E, not public domain. Otherwise, I doubt they'd have released them on WWF/E CD's as much as they did.

I rented this for the X-Box yesterday and played it for about five hours and...well it's not much better than LOW 2. The controls are actually more difficult to get a hang of, and after an hour my thumb and fore-finger were throbbing like never before.

The career mode with running through the eras was an improvement over the other games, and you do change outfits as you enter each era. The minor problem there is that they were trying to have whoever you pick use outfits that defined your guy through the era. This wasn't done right as I used Randy Savage, but they gave me the Macho Madness outfit from the late 90's (all black with the WCW Savage behind bars T-shirt) for the 80's matches (I should have had the three star orange costume).

You have to basically do five matches throughout the era, and the arenas are done well. The entrances are also better than last game, using the voice talents of Gary Michael Cappetta for the ring introductions.

That leads to the announcing during the match, which is handled by Tony Schiavone, Larry Zbyszko (sp?) and Bobby Heenan! The sad thing is this is Heenan with the throat cancer, so unfortunately you can't always understand him. The biggest annoyance is the fact that the announcers will have set conversations they say about certain wrestlers. The first time I heard Larryland say "OH YEAH" in a mock Savage voice was funny. The 300'th time he and Tony discuss whether Savage is the craziest guy all time in wrestling...well you want to throw your console out the window. I like that they gave these guys work, but you will be turning off the announcers in record time.

All in all, I was actually pretty disappointed in the game. The collision detection is way off, the camera is often frustrating and difficult to understand, and the announcing is unnecessary. I was glad I rented this game, but it is absolutely NOT worth buying.

Oh, that's what it was, The Thrill. Damn me for falling for WWE revisionist history. I oughta be ashamed of myself, I know... *sigh*...

By the way... ditto, regarding the game. It's OK, but I'm not buying it. No way.
