First screenshots posted from the game. I have to say, the graphics look pretty amazing.

I'm hoping this isn't just a new game with the GTA3 engine. I'd be disappointed with that, if only because they've had a while to do something different. Sure, let's hope that the general premise is the same, but I'd love some new things. The first game was a "holy shit" moment for me, and I'd like San Andreas to be the same.

May 12, 2004 - It was a good time to be a Grand Theft Auto fan last night, as Rockstar Games officially unveiled the first screenshots from its upcoming sequel, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (which you can read all about here) to a stunned and completely receptive crowd. Totaling three in all, the small batch of screens were originally unveiled on the official San Andreas website, but not publically advertised until this morning when the the company sent out its mailer.

Luckily the mailer also marked a brand new update for the website too, as the first bits of information pertaining to the story were revealed. It read exactly like this:

"Five years ago Carl Johnson escaped from the pressures of life in Los Santos, San Andreas.. .a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs and corruption; where film stars and millionaires do their best to avoid the dealers and gang bangers.

Now, it's the early 90s. Carl's got to go home. His mother has been murdered, his family has fallen apart and his childhood friends are all heading towards disaster.

On his return to the neighborhood, a couple of corrupt cops frame him for homicide. CJ is forced on a journey that takes him across the entire state of San Andreas, to save his family and to take control of the streets."

Unfortunately those quotes above are the only bits of info that we have so far; as Rockstar is obviously going to keep the meatier details under wraps until it later this year. At the very least, we finally know which era that game now takes place and that it has a conceptual style reminiscent of the popular 1990s gangsta films like Boyz in the Hood and Juice.

Actually it wouldn't be anything like Juice as the 90's NYC was so far from the left coast. These days it is closer as they now have L.A. gangs thriving in NYC. A better example would have been Menace II Society. Ha, sorry for nitpicking. I can't wait. And as representative of the African American race I would like to apologize well in advance for the inevitable boycott that blow hards like Rev. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson will surely bring to GTA: SA.

Heh. Yeah, no kidding. Of course, people portray Italians as gangsters all the time and no one raises a fuss. Betcherass that Jesse Jackson will be all over this.

But I've found it pretty easy to filter him out. So bring on San Andreas!

I think that San Andreas is still going to be based off of the GTA3 engine... heavily modded though it is by now. GTA4, the TRUE sequel, is when they'll break out the new engine (and hopefully non-hacked online compatibility, whee!)

I'm pumped, big-time. Back to a more contemporary setting, potentially awesome terrain, what appear to be RIDABLE BICYCLES (yeah, okay, kinda silly but you know everyone's gonna go on a six-star police chase on one, and you KNOW it'll be hilarious and awesome), and I'm still holding out hope for earthquakes. San Andreas as a STATE makes me wonder... is there going to be THAT huge an environment to drive around in, or is the "journey" that he goes on going to be several separate (non-connected) cities? I hope the former, it'd be a big mistake to get rid of the free-roaming feeling that the GTA3 games have had.

Check this screenshot out (images.1up.com) They nailed South Central right on the money. The one story flats and the huge intersections (makes drivebys easy). I am curious as to how they will portray the Hispanics. And hopefully we can rob the rich movie stars in the valley. I am pretty sure they will have a Korean liqueor store or two to rob, since Rockstars likes to delve in sterotypes. I also wonder what kind of gangs they will sub for the Crips and Bloods?

From Gamespot

[UPDATE] Early this morning, Rockstar released the first plot summary of GTA: SA, which confirmed its early 1990s millieu. Here it is verbatim:

"Five years ago Carl Johnson escaped from the pressures of life in Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs and corruption. Where filmstars and millionaires do their best to avoid the dealers and gangbangers.

All the information released by Rockstar indicates that the controversial Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas has not lost the rough-and-ready nature of its predecessors. GameSpot will have more details on this highly anticipated title--which is due in Q4 2004--as they become available.

Does that mean the main character is black? Not that it matters as I have no problem playing white characters. But damn if the name Carl Johnson doesn't put a picture of a diesel black dude in my head. I give them props for trying something risky.

I'm the only one who remembers this, I see?

One of the screen shots looks to me like it's a shot of your character who is indeed a fairly non-descript looking black guy.

""[The word] liberal derives from the Latin 'liberalis' - of freedom, befitting the free. Synonyms are progressive, broad-minded, unprejudiced and generous; while antonyms include reactionary, narrow-minded, intolerant and stingy. Accordingly, a political liberal is an open-minded person who considers all the arguments before drawing conclusions. A conservative, on the other hand, clings to one position and sees no reason to entertain diverse viewpoints because he already has his mind made up. Are mainstream media 'liberal'? I certainly hope so."

Here (eurogamer.net) is more about the actual game. San Andreas is a state about six times the size of Vice City, with three distinct city areas and deserts and a mountain in between. You can now do 4-person drive-bys. They've tweaked the AI, some graphics changes (reflections and lighting), and added rag doll physics, among other additions. Plus, now you have to eat to fill up your stamina meter, and if you eat too much, you'll visibly get fatter (until you work it off at the gym).

OK I have to say something. I am not the type to get all up in arms, about a person's bigotry. I could care less because not everyone in the world is going to instantly like someone. It is mathematically impossible. When I was in Job Corp, I became close friends with a guy who was a Skinhead, just because we both loved Anne Rice novels. To sum it up, I am not sensitive to things like that. But I was caught by surprise while scumming though the muck that is GameFaqs.com forum, reading how people claim they will not play the game (yeah right) if black people where too heavily involved. Not that I am worried about the finical success of this game. Rockstar could just start printing money now. I am also surprised by some of the people who allegedly are black, saying they want to boycott this game because of stereotypes. I mean what the fuck. Have they been playing this series at all? Video games have a long proud history of playing to stereotypes. Look how many decades Mario set the great Italian heritage back. It's nothing new. Oh well I guess that is what I get for hanging out in gamefaqs forum. Jesus, now that I think about it, gamefaqs has the worst forums in the history of the internet. No, I guest aintitcool still has that honor.

The newest Game Informer issue gives all the useful info on San Andreas, It is definitely #1 on my list- tied of course with Smackdown vs Raw, which is also on its way.

The three cities will be connected by roads you can travel on, not a dark "now loading" screen or anything. The long roads will be actual settings.

Wont it be cool if there are airports and you can fly from one place to the other? So far it seems that it will be long travelling times between each city; something that plagues online RPG's if you are impatient like me- still, it does make it cooler.

Man, I was hoping this would be the first GTA with "create-a-thug."

I just want the perverse wish fulfillment of wandering the streets as myself killing hookers and the elderly on my stolen bicycle.

Besides that, sounds good to me! Here's hoping for earthquakes!

With the "eye-toy" you'd think that would be possible. Guess they didn't have the time/interest to do that. Didn't the new Tony Hawk game have something like that? I suppose someone could hack the PC version when it comes out so people can make new skins.

They have some crazy mods out for Vice City on PC. They have a mod which is a total conversion so you can play in Liberty City under Vice City rules. Which means you can ride motorcycle and fly helos, along with better weapons. Not to mention the shit load of car skins they have. I may have to go ahead and pick the PC version up, I saw it for 19.99.

Yeah, Tony Hawk Underground had the ability to put your own face on the character. I don't know if it was eye-toy related or not, since I think THUG (ironic..) came out before the camera.

If any of the mods are half as cool as that GTA3 total conversion, I just might have to pluck down $19.99 myself.

It wasn't Eye Toy related. You were supposed to take a picture of your own face (using conditions outlined in the manual) and e-mail it to Activision. They would then give you a code that you could access by going online with your PS2. Bingo! Your face in the game.

I could see the GTA series pulling off something similar. Maybe with the long-rumored GTA4 engine overhaul.

Isn't it odd that out of the thousands and thousands of video games made to date there really hasn't been a big time game that actually made you play as a black character. Sure, there are sports games where you control a number of players and games where you can pick a character out of an assortment, and a few kung-fu games but nothing like this really. I've wondered if it sucks for lefthanders to play video games because all the controls are backwards, but I never considered the fact that it's gotta kind of suck to be black and having so many games where you are a white guy by default. I don't know, it's one of those things that I've never really thought about until now.

To some people it is a big deal I guess. I am an avid reader so I always put myself into whatever character I play. Hell when I play Donkey Kong, I am in full simian cosplay (just JKN). The one thing I don't like is the rumor that 50 Cent mumble mouth ass has a role in the game. Please don't let it be the lead. As that would be one of the rare times I been taken out of the game due to excess cheese. But if he plays a character where I will eventually be given the option to murder in some macabre fashion then I am all for it.
