The name comes from the idea that this would replace the sweat you'd lose in physical activity, so why not just drink some sweat! You can find it all over Asia and on the island of Guam as well as Hawaii and the Northern Marianas Islands. Sometimes you can find it at an Asian grocer.
Here's a link where you can read all about it:

Water Salad--tasted like the water at the bottom of a fruit salad. Tasty, but a little on the "light" side.
Mitsuya Cider-- The Greatest Drink in the World. Ever. Seriously, I've never had anything better than this in any country, in my whole life. I later found it at an Asian grocer about an hour away from college, but now that's about 6 hours away from where I am now. I hate my life.

If it is the same one, I remember trying that back in the day too. That was really good. Didn't know it was a sports drink though.

And lately Gatorade has been sweeter then Kool-Aid. It can't be healthy anymore, I can't stop drinking. People in Japan that has no connection to the military bases here have to do with Gatorade in one flavor only Lime. Suckers.
And Amen to the poster about the goodness of Mitsuya Cider. I love the grape flavor too. There is nothing better then downing an ice cold Mitsuya Cider after a work out. I keep a 2- litter in the fridge at all times. I love the way it feels like my throat is burning when I take the first gulp.

Hang on a sec.
Actually, it's not too bad. It's got a very light grapefruity taste. I might buy some more the next time I'm at the Japanese mall, but probably not unless I'm planning to drink it in public as a conversation piece. (And besides, I'm more likely to spend my Japanese mall money on Pocky and Moomin* toys.)

*Moomins are Finnish, of course, but I guess they're pretty popular in Japan, too. |
